Innoversal's Pixel Qi-based tablet prototype: $530 for the display of your dreams
We already had the opportunity to sit down and tinker with a slew of Pixel Qi-based prototype devices here in Taipei, but one in particular managed to catch our eye in a rather surprising location. Innoversal, a new company here in Taiwan just looking to change the world, found itself hosting a striking 10.1-inch device that grabbed our heartstrings and wouldn't let go. The highlight of the starlet was the expansive 3Qi capacitive touchpanel, with a 1,024 x 600 resolution and the ability to save battery life by flipping the backlight off when in broad daylight. The current build was relying on a trio of ambient light sensors to determine whether or not the backlight would be on, but we begged and pleaded for the company to implement a dedicated on / off toggle switch along the border before shipping it out. Speaking of which, Innoversal will most likely ship the product under its own branding here in Taiwan, but it's certainly open to selling the design to other major manufacturers who may wish to slap their own logo on there. If all goes well, we could see it first take off this September (globally), with a 16GB + 3G / WiFi model retailing for between $530 and $550.
So, what's that get you? Besides the best power-saving mobile display this world has ever seen (seriously, the crispness and viewing angles were extraordinary), you'll also get a 1.66GHz Atom N450 processor, an integrated SSD (16GB, 32GB and 64GB capacities will be available), an SDHC card slot, 8 megapixel camera, 3.5mm headphone jack, a SIM card slot (for 3G data), USB 2.0 connectivity, 802.11b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth 2.0+EDR and a 6-cell (5,300mAh) battery to boot. We were told that the device will support Windows 7, Android, Ubuntu and Chrome OS, with the former two being on display at the show. The working mockup that was on display was sufficiently lightweight and sturdy, and we'd be fibbing to ourselves if we said we weren't giddy about the prospect of holding a finalized unit before Old Man Winter comes to visit. Hop on past the break for a video overview... or else.

Now we are talking!...:D
@juanvaldez Oh yes.
@juanvaldez
wth is adam....
@juanvaldez
Go on son. (pats back of youngster) ... STICK IT TO THE MAN!
@juanvaldez Yes we are. Nice.
@juanvaldez
My thoughts exactly, we need more of this kind of tablet!
@juanvaldez
What's the big deal? iPad has every one of those features and more for just $499
Ok, sorry. Even i couldn't finish this w/ a straight face. Look, Apple, they're called ports.
@steel
100,000,000% agreed. say it with us, Apple--"ports"
@juanvaldez
Now we are not talking, let see you want a tablet that does it all, the reason you will not get one is the Manufacturers hire designers that build form factors, but cannot control the O/S, so you get a nice piece of hardware that cannot do it all. Apple did a great job with the iPad, keyboard on Screen or remote hardware, why because they control the O/S and the Hardware. Yes they limited it, but what did you anticipate for the price. Lets See....I want great graphics, I want Great Input, I want USB , Removable Battery, I removable Storage, I want Wireless,I want 10" Screen, no 8" screen, I want , I want, but I want this Virgin for the price of a Whore......yes I am PC User....Cheap. that's me WilliamNighthawk....
@annoynimous
It reminds me a little of the Notion Ink Adam (also with Pixel Qi), but instead of intel atom it comes with NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor.
Wow, 8 mp camera?
I like it, I hope they sell it this year.
@divechronicles
Sorry, you are right: A usb port would have definitely pushed the iPad over $1000.
@juanvaldez
ooo gimme gimme!
@ummhello Ports that almost nobody needs.
@steel Dude, You owe me a new keyboard for spraying Mtn Dew on it while reading your post. Warn people next time!! =D
@juanvaldez AND an SSD, thank you. I have no idea why some companies ship standard drives in highly mobile devices.
If this thing could be paired with Windows Embedded Compact 7, then it would be 'bout perfect.
@TheBennettBrigade
Perfect would be if CE7 decided to support a more robust Office implementation with pen input and a fully-featured OneNote package. Use the Qi + digitizer screen, let Asus design the hardware, expand the Metro UI Microsoft showed off, and include Zune Pass integration for good measure. That would be a fairly perfect blend of consumption and productivity for the average student and would set itself apart from the iPad. I'd even consider that a reasonable Courier replacement.
@schismal If they can bake all of that into CE7 then that would be cool. But if it's going to have an Atom processor then it's going to need a lighter OS, that's all I'm saying.
@TheBennettBrigade That's understandable, but it can support both the heavy OS and the lightweight ones, like Chrome and Android. If it can support those, it can do Compact 7.
@TheBennettBrigade
It would be about perfect if those USB ports were USB 3.0 instead of 2.0, it cam in a flavor that supported the 3 North American 3G bands (or just shipped Globally with 5 or 6 band 3G), and like Darren said in the article, put a physical switch on it somewhere to control the back light for those time when you and the ambient light sensors disagree.
Oh, and make sure it supports Bluetooth and make sure it has support for Bluetooth keyboards
I don't really care what OS it ships with as it's clearly able to support multiple OS'es so if I don't like the one it came with I can switch it or make it dual boot (even from an SD card).
@N900 Except that Compact 7 is only for ARM7 processors.
Competition = a good thing.
Oh my, are they really the first ones with that idea ?!
@simvalue No, the first one with that screen.
@Atkins No they aren't. I've been waiting for the Notion Ink Adam for almost half a year and it's one of the features that made it standout. That along with the rotating cam and the fact that its running Android.
@SanzaBlancoAkA2C This is a newer version of the screen, and since Notion doesn't have any shipping dates then they don't really count.
I guess Windows 7 Embedded Compact Edition would have been better on this device. Windows 7 is too full-featured.
@slickpaki Windows CE does not run on intel processors and probably never will. There is no reason why this thing shouldn't be capable of running a full version of windows anyway..
@slickpaki I think that Linux would be better. It is open source, and there are many open source applications which can be INSTANTLY recompiled to ARM, without having to wait for ARM versions of closed source.
Open > Closed and proprietary.
And let me remind you that the core of Mac OS is Open Source. (NEXT Step and BSD unix)
@slickpaki
No one wants a tablet with anything related to Windows.
Android for the win! (Now if we can just convince Google to drop Chrome OS.)
@toddjy actually I think I would prefer the chrome OS to Android. I have a nexus one and I think its not a tablet OS. A mixture of android and chrome OS would be nice.
@stoffer actually i want one that dual boots win7 and ubuntu-
Yummy! I could eat this right up!
.....
Hmmm, I probably should go get some breakfast....
This is what the iPad should have been
@Locust
Only if Apple were trying NOT to sell it to consumers. Consumers are not looking for Windows 7 desktop crap. If they were, the HP Slate would be selling in quantity by now.
why is it taking so long for this display to be incorporated into laptops by now???
@dark star Maybe the fact that it appears that they can only do 1024 x 600 right now in quantity... Which would limit it to small netbooks.
All these gorgeous tablets... It's a great week to be a gadget geek.
@grayskul That would be a tablet geek.
@grayskul
You would think so..but I'll bet you that 95% of these devices will never get released...and the ones that do won't make it to the USA.
@DoctarPeppar You're probably right, but even if only 5 of the hundreds on display ever make it out, there could be something for those of us not drinking Apple's kool-aid.
@Atkins *Crosses fingers about m11x announcement* despite knowing they don't really need to go to Taiwan for it, they might be there with something else and drop the news.
why for gods sake is this glossy? the whole point of this display is to be sunlight readable so why would you even think of making it glossy?
@Xstream because they decided to have a touch interface?
@cromulentgeek
so they need it to be glossy so you can better see the fingerprints on it or what is your point?
@Xstream Glass=Gloss, but has more protection and better touch interface. Just get a matte overlay (works reasonably well on my phone).
@Xstream
Why glossy? Cuz it's glass dimwhit. You can't do the screen's clarity justice without using glass, buddy, that's the point.
Unfortunate...maybe, but unless you happen to be sitting in just the right spot outside to reflect the sun into your eyes, then it won't really be an issue. It's worth it for the clear screen.
.
@Xstream I must be in a serious minority for actually liking the glossy screen over the matte.
@dajimmers
no glass!=gloss, if you use the right glass like mirogard
http://www.glsgmbh.de/produkte/470mag2f.jpg
@Bakerdk Newsflash, dimwit!
Glass can also be etched to avoid being glossy!
And I also don't like glossy displays cause even with dimmed light you see reflections, especially with dark movies.
