PlayStation emulator coming to Android, courtesy of yongzh and ZodTTD
If you don't know the names yongzh and ZodTTD, you can certainly be forgiven, but they're basically the cell phone emulation dream team -- where the former has been cranking out high-quality Nintendo and Sega emulators for Android, the latter is the one who brought PSX to iPhone, iPhone 3GS and the Palm Pre. Today, we hear they're collaborating on a PSX emulator for Android that's running faster than the 3GS version -- before Froyo's even factored into the equation -- and that when his domination over the PSX is complete, ZodTTD intends to begin work on an Nintendo 64 emulator for Android, and then VLC. Without letting our enthusiasm get the better of us, let's just say it's an exciting time to be an Android owner, to say the least.

But can it run Crysis?
@wookieecrisp. Wookie Scum
@Lord Vader
Awww be nice to the wookies man
In a world that doesn't - DROID DOES!
@Mike Vick Don't even get me started on Droids
@Fragmented Aren't you taking these rules and laws thing a little far. They're just reporting on something that was sent to them. Sony won't do a damn thing.
*Goes off to download*
@Fragmented
I hope you're being facetious. How does reporting on the fact that an emulator exists possibly mean that they are condoning piracy?
@Fragmented
Some of us have Playstation 1 CD's sitting right next to us. Yeah, we'll be emulating them.
@Fragmented They also reported on Foxconn employees committing suicide. Are you telling me Engadget condones suicide? Youre a dummy.
@Lord Vader lol
@Fragmented I'm pretty sure emulation isn't illegal. Its downloading roms that is illegal. These emulators don't actually contain game roms so nothing wrong is being done. Suck on that you crybaby.
@Fragmented You're an idiot and/or you can't be serious.
Why this is not posted as BREAKING?
If Steve Jobs goes to bathroom it is breaking, but this not?
They Blew it
@Beatnik
GO ANDROD, thats the power of open source, I knew Linux was going to take the world one way or another, it happened not on desktop but on mobile, and thats the future.
@Beatnik
Hilarious video for you all:
Android is for porn?: Starring an animated Steve Jobs
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IraQfhlMwi4&feature=player_embedded#!
@Beatnik lol that was epic.
@Mike Vick if only the D-pad was on the left and you can push diagonally. Then the droid would have been PERFECT. Still love my SNES emulator though. Can't wait for these to start churning out.
In the mean time maybe HTC or Motorola can dish out a gamer friendly android smartphone.
@wookieecrisp I thought that was genuinely funny.
This is completely monumental. What the fuck was I doing with a BlackBerry all those years.
@Beatnik So true
i hate the stupid hype around Apple he takes a piss and its all over the internet
while other stuff with good reason to be all over the media is stuffed under the overrated hype around Apple.
PSX emulation on Android is BIG news ! i hope we'll be able to do more gaming on an android than Steve can dream about on a Mac ^^
@SilverSatin I love my EVO 4G. Sent from my EVO 4G.
@CaryHiroyuki Tagawa
Can you say Class 4 or higher SD card requirement?
I already loved my Android phone...but this is just icing on the cake!
@TacosRule
on a side note, how come android being as open as it's supposed to be, still not have bluetooth capabilities windows mobile had years ago, like wireless gamepads for example?
@JeremyBenthem you can, just there are only 2 bt gamepads in existence
@JeremyBenthem You do realise that we just had the wiimote bluetooth running on Android and the rest will follow suit shortly? It's just a matter of time.
@JeremyBenthem
If you're trying to use a wireless gamepad on a screen smaller than the gamepad, you blew it.
Seriously though, how many people want to carry around a gamepad along with their smartphone?? The whole point of these kinds of things is not needing the extra peripherals.
@JeremyBenthem Well there are a couple apps that let you use Wii remotes with Android, no PS3 controllers yet though because those are harder to code for.
@TacosRule
more like the icing on the Eclair or the Froyo or maybe even the Gingerbread! YUMMY!
@Plazmic Flame Plus, there are some phones that can output the picture to the TV (like the Evo can over HDMI). That means you can have and entire system and games all in your phone...that's awesome.
@NikAmi
I see where you're coming from. I still say that the amount of people who would actually want to do that is very minimal for it not to be a top priority but I do see how awesome that would be.
@Plazmic Flame
we're not talking about the iPhone, the point of Android so that we can get what we want
@TacosRule
More like the Mochi on your Froyo
@smileyguy Not on HTC Sense enabled phones... :( Just got a EVO and went to the market to look for the wii controller app. The 2 apps they have on the market say it won't work with HTC Sense enabled devices. I would kill, KILL, PS3 Dual Shock controller support... Here's to hoping someone in the immediate future figures it out, or that Sony releases a app for it themselves...
@NikAmi Actually, no (EVO owner here). The HDMI implementation on the EVO is half baked at best. Me thinks that it's really a Trojan Horse for stricter DRM control on our handsets. I was super psyched about the HDMI port until I realized it's use is sooo limited ATM. Maybe over time someone will figure out how to use everything on the phone through the port, as an external monitor on your TV. But, as it now stands you're better off getting an HTC Incredible and using the USB to RCA cable for external monitor use if this is a big deal to you, or better yet just getting a Nokia N900...
nice。
@littlea
Yes, I finally got to send an update to Engadget and it was made public!
I feel awesome.
I hope they can push this as far as PS2. That game catalog is formidable... not to mention the amount of value it would bring to whatever platform could emulate it.
@buoy
I don't think the current generation of phones could handle that. You have to be one or two generations above something to emulate it, and snapdragon andoid phones can barely handle PS2 level graphics. Froyo and the JIT compiler may help, but it will probably still be short. We'll definitely get there eventually, though!
@l3reakmanx But with that new 1.2 GHz dual core Snapdragon Qualcomm announced and NVIDIA's Tegra 2 coming soon...
@buoy If my 3.1GHz dual core PC can't run PS2 games fullspeed, Android phones won't anytime soon.
@cloud858rk And that's the thing. Emulation requires way more power than the original. Even if modern phones can handle PS2-comparable graphics, they can't handle them forced through an emulation environment.
@buoy
High end computers can barely run PS2 emulators well. It's going to be a few years. A few LONG years.
it's been 15 years since the PS1 was released, give the PS2 that at the bare minimum. Most likely more.
@l3reakmanx Froyo won't make any difference to this. It isn't written in Java.
@l3reakmanx hum actually the current generation of phones (nexus one or 3GS) are better than what the ps2 hardware can do. A PSP is better than a ps2 hardwarewise and the current gen phones are about the same as a PSP. However, emulating anything needs about 2-3 times the performance of the original hardware and an intricate knowledge of both hardware platforms. Needless to say, it will be a long time before any phone is at that level because there are very harsh power requirements. However, if Sony or the companies that worked on PS2 games choose to, they can release the older game for the new platforms. And here is where the iPhone completely destroys the Android pipe dream. Big game developers do not like Google and Android and do not trust them. It's really sad but considering how fast the Android API changes you can't really blame them.

Now that's a great way to make use of the Wiimote&Nunchuk bluetooth interface.
Let's see some 2.1 and 2.2 on the X10. I so want to use this software but 1.6 is not cutting it! :(
Looks like I'll be adding joystick support to my Wii Controller IME app soon.
@Frawley
Sweet, I was just wondering when we'd get that! Does that mean 8-directional joystick, or analog?
@l3reakmanx Hopefully analog. The only problem I see is that there aren't "analog buttons" on android. I might be forced to use 8 directions depending on how the emulator picks up the input.
