Word of HTC Evo 4G storage bug couldn't come at a worse time (update: OTA fix)
If you read our review of HTC's awe-inspiring Evo 4G, you might have noticed that we recommended ditching the paltry stock 8GB microSD card and living large by throwing in a 32GB model. We were being a wee bit facetious, but as it turns out the advice was well-founded. We're seeing reports flung far and wide across these great united internets about errors regarding "insufficient file permissions" when attempting to write to that packed-in card, others finding that the phone will simply fail to read the card altogether. Our first suspicion was bogus flash, like the counterfeit ones that plagued the Chumby, but HTC spokesman Keith Nowak indicated they have identified the cause and there's an OTA fix coming "very shortly." We know it's early, and apparently not too many of you have rolled out of bed yet to get your Evo today, but sound off in comments if you're seeing this issue as well. Meanwhile, we're trying to replicate it on ours.Update: Well, that was quick. Dre wrote in to tell us of a 13MB OTA update being pushed already, version 1.32.651.6, that looks to include a number of fixes including, apparently, a solution for this storage bug. We're hearing it also breaks the root path that dropped yesterday, but it sounds like a decent trade-off for now.

@sfox8
HTC is different because they admitted the flaw, and actually fixed it. With Apple, If steve jobs doesn't say its a known flaw, then its a hidden feature.
13MB?!? Dear god, do they think I'm made of money, considering how badly we get raped for data by our 2 providers here in New Zealand?
@Twitchy
Sprint = unlimited data. Part of the reason they're awesome.
None of the networks in NZ is offering unlimited data as far as I know. The best one can hope for is 3GB a month on a plan that will cost more gold-pressed Latinum than all Ferengi own combined.
@qmartman711 And they already pushed out an update for it http://www.androidcentral.com/evo-4g-ota-update-already-pushed-out
Is the Mobile Hotspot feature something that can be turned on and off or would I be locked into a contract? I may pick this phone up today.
@malexandria1 You can activate the mobile hotspot on a monthly basis, says my Sprint corporate rep.
I've been vacillating between the EVO and the Streak and I finally made the plunge to go with the EVO. It's on order and should be here Tuesday- (darn corporate account policies!) Sorry Dell, but you lingered too long and word has it you're still going to be rocking 1.6 on release.
The OTA update coming out so quickly is good news and gives me hope I might actually see Froyo before Christmas.
Is there a fix for 3 hr battery life too?
@Sy Cycle the freaking battery. And the battery life is much much longer.
@Sy
No... your vibrator can only last that much on a single set of batteries...
Go away troll...
@Sy Actually they did, you can pick up a spare battery for pretty cheap.
The release of the Evo is truly a turning point for Sprint. I've been with them for 10+ years. The customer service has improved, greatly and the plans are phenomenal.
And this is better than an iPhone? It's still running Android. How is it better?
@jckchn
Why are you here TROLL???
It's funny because it's not like APPLE pays you or do they? Probably not. Dedicate this much time to your family so they can love you more.
@jckchn Looks as though you are involved with a tiny little mind. Very small.
Android users are going to do what they want regardless of what you say. So you can fuck off
I just purchased my new EVO AND FIRST ANDROID PHONE AND IT IS AWESOME i thought i had something with my touch pro 2! AS FAR AS A BUG? I JUST FORMATTED THE SD CARD AND IT WORKS FINE! oh wow i can honestly say when i played around with the iphone it did not stimulate me like this EVO IS....WOW!
Android users have united like Voltron. I'd hate to be a troll in this thread.
I'm stuck with AT&T so essentially the EVO would cost me $200+$200. Which isn't that bad considering I paid $400 for my current Blackberry Bold 2 and I'd more than likely pay the same for the next iPhone.
So I'm going to head over to my local Radio Shack and give the phone a once over and then wait to see what happens Tuesday. In the meantime I'll probably watch the dozens upon dozens of videos being uploaded to Vimeo and Youtube about the phone and shot with the phone.
@Joao I just came from checking it out at RadioShack and I hate RadioShack. They cover the screen with some stupid picture so you can't do a goddam thing with it.
Pisses me off. I wanted to check it out.
Well damn, OTA update already?!?! Insanely fast! Good on them for moving on this fast!!
But broke the root? SHIT hahaha Dammit HTC, just let that one slip by!
Okay, so mine said there was an update but I was in the middle of something so I didn't allow it. Now, I can't get the update to show up again. I tries using the firmware update and HTC software update in the settings but they both say there are no updates available.
I checked the software version and mine does not have the latest. :^(
@brittonx
yeah mine just did the update while i was in the middle of something but i hit yes....it will probaly try again....
I suspect this "bug" cropped up just to patch the early root exploit.
I'm sure XDA is on the job tho...
HAPPY EVO DAY EVERYONE!
If you care about rooting your phone, don't do the update. The community will introduce the SD card fix on its own without needing the OTA fix. Check this thread out:

I just got a new update pushed to my hero....weird I wonder if it has to do with the evo?
Wait, so can someone confirm that this is a problem with the EVO and NOT a problem with the microSD card?
I ask b/c I'm thinking of swapping the 8GB EVO card and my 16GB camera card since I never use more than 8GB at a time on my camera. Obviously I don't want to do that if the card is garbage.
It only come with 8G??? What a rip off! I would have expected at least 32G out of the box!
The update was pushed to my phone almost as soon as I activated it.
You boyz have convinced me! I am going to my local Radio Shack the moment I am done with my next appointment! Imagine! A company that fixes a bug and rolls out an OTA fix within hours!!!!!
So, will having this great phone get me laid or help me become popular? Oh! I see, it is just a gadget for fun. Well, I must buy it and make my iPhone weenie friends envious of what a real processor that multitasks can do.
I formatted the 8gb on device then format on pc. Reset a few times and still yet to see the error pop up again.
im new to the scene when u say cycle the battery wat does that mean?
@kingpinchi You should do this with all battery powered devices. Make sure you go from a full charge to nearly fully dead. Then charge again. Doing this a couple of times helps you get the most out of a full charge.
@kingpinchi
It means use the phone until it dies, then fully charge, repeat a few times. Do not use the phone while it's plugged in during these initial cycles.
Oh well. It's fixed. We move on.
Before we got inside for our Evos, a Sprint employee notified us of the problem. I was first in line at my store and got out in less than 20 minutes. Upon using the device, I actually had no problem saving photos to the memory card prior to the update. But I did get the update pushed to my device, so it's working either way. I'm so in love with my Evo.
Hadn't noticed about the included SD card with the EVO before but really they only included an 8GB card? HD2 came with a 16GB wtf lol
I want this phone but it saddens me that we live in a world where it is ok to ship & sell things that are broken before they are used. Good customer service following up with an update so quickly though.
No problems here
