'iPhone vs Android' report finds Apple has three times Google's market share
Other intriguing figures include a high rate of loyalty among iPhone OS and Android users, with 80 percent of the former and 70 percent of the latter expressing a preference for the same OS in their next phone -- both rather shaming Microsoft and RIM's numbers, which were a mediocre 34 and 47 percent, respectively. Funnily enough, despite its inflammatory title, this report finds Android and iPhone users are more similar to each other than anyone else -- an uncomfortable fact for both parties to deal with, we're sure. The source link contains some more demographic comparisons, so why not go check them out and drop some sage analysis for us in the comments?

Dear Engadget,
We get it. Apple rocks and crushes every other company. Steve Job is a god who should be praised every morning while turning on our Iphone. Could we move on to something else ? Please ?
@MiniG
Eat a focking dick. When they brought the report from a couple of weeks ago on Android marketshare, you nutjobs were rejoicing. Now get the fckkk outta here.
@Jerry Rawlings Nice talking with you, I particularly appreciate the fine language.
@MiniG
Thanks.
@MiniG

2. This is about Android and the iPhone, and it's relevant, FACTUAL data. Stop fucking CRYING.
For all you Android fanboys crying over the iphone OS in this report including ipads and ipod touches, read the focking title. It says smartphones. It is comparing the OS based only on smartphones.
By the way Android also comes on PMP's, tablets, mp3 players and others. Are those also included in the Android figures?
@Jerry Rawlings
ipod touchs are 40% of the iphone os devices
the percentage of android pmps of the number of android devices is much smaller
btw why does the pie chart say iphone os then?
also see http://images.appleinsider.com/idc-100507.png
@lordofweed
It says Apple iPhone OS because that is what it's CALLED, you moron. Stop making excuses for Android's poor performance.
@lordofweed
Damn this dude dumb, they are comparing smartphones based on the OS they run and the marketshare they have.
Duh. iPhone OS been around a lot longer than Android. It also had the benefit of being the "first" smartphone that took over on a large scale, targeted to general audience and not high-end tech users, is marketed way way more, and Apple is after all very trendy. This chart doesn't necessarily mean that one OS is better than the other. Just the obvious facts. I for one still love me some FroYo!
@jawman
Wrong, marketing has nothing to do with it. "being trendy" has nothing to do with it. Apple was at better than 9% at 18 months, which is where Android is right now, so not only is Apple doing better NOW, Apple was ALSO doing better than Android at the same relative point in time - and this is DESPITE Android being on multiple handsets and carriers.
People don't continue to buy a product in massively increasing numbers over a period of 3 years if it sucks. That's all there is to it. You can try to make up whatever flimsy excuses you want, but Android is not now, and has never done as well as Apple's single phone. Accept it.
@Jack
Here we go.
Typical Android hating D-BAG. I never said iPhone OS sucks. Stop putting words in people's mouth, you douche. All I said is that I prefer Android. You clearly prefer Apple, and that's okay, but that doesn't mean you have to go trolling around the interwebs to feel better about it.
While I'm very invested in my iPhone ($300+ in apps), I'm giving very serious consideration to jumping ship and getting my wife and I EVO's on Sprint. Whether that happens is *entirely* contingent on what happens at the WWDC tomorrow morning (doubly so considering AT&T's absurd new data policies). If AT&T weren't letting existing subscribers keep their current $30/unlimited plans with the new iPhone - then no matter what Steve Jobs announced tomorrow, we'd be dumping AT&T - iPhone or no.
While Android has a long way to go in the UI department (it's Windows 3.1 to iPhone OS's Mac OSX), it still DOES everything I'd want it to do - albeit in a less intuitive, more haphazard way.
If I had to consider a new phone as of tomorrow morning, however, the iPhone wouldn't be a consideration at all solely due to AT&T's new data policies. This is what sucks - going forward, Android is going to start gaining more market share more quickly simply because AT&T is fucking the dog and the iPhone isn't available anywhere else. When people start getting bills for $30, $45, or more for 400Mb or 600Mb of data, respectively - they're going to bail on AT&T (and can you say lawsuit if AT&T doesn't actively notify the user and require acceptance before that data limit is hit).
Hence, if iPhone doesn't break free of the shackles of AT&T *THIS YEAR*, it could ultimately be the death of the iPhone.
@Veraxus
Your whining about the data plans seems to be entirely contingent on somebody getting the $15 200MB plan and going over it constantly. Um, so why don't you get the $25 2GB plan instead then? It's actually cheaper than the $30 "unlimited" plan which is limited to 5GB anyway. And unless you can prove you're using more than 2GB of data a month, you don't have any excuse.
Actually it sounds like you're just trying to fabricate some kind of excuse to ditch Apple and AT&T. So far you're not doing too well.
I love how I can customize my iPhone to my liking. Oh wait... I like my iPod touch, but as a phone.... meh.
Android gives users the freedom to chose what phone fits their need. It's nice to have a choice of hardware and carrier. Personal preference I guess.
I would hope to think manufactures are getting that people want updates and they want them now. I don't believe Android 2.2 has been 'offically' released so it will be interesting to see how long it will take manufactures to upgrade with it on the phones that have just been released with 2.1...
Time will tell, and I seriously hope OS 4 for the iPhone brings something new and fresh to the table (give the users a little customization or something!) not just a bandaid patch till the next 'big update'.
@shoman24v
Yes, Android does give you the option of different hardware and carriers.
It also gives you the option of different software levels with no hope of officially updating. Like the entry level phone with a QWERTY keyboard? Hope you like 1.6, because that's all you get. Fragmentation sucks.
@shoman24v
believe it or not, most people don't give a shit about "customizing" their phone. They just want it to fucking WORK. This is proven by the sheer number of iPhones that have been sold, and the iPhone's obviously growing popularity.
If you don't like the iPhone, that's great. Get something else. But don't make it sound like Apple's going the wrong direction, or isn't doing enough to give people what they want. You would have to be a total moron to ignore the numbers the iPhone is generating, which clearly indicates that Apple is doing *exactly* what people want.
We in the middle east have Nokia as best seller for nearly 10 years or even more, but things have been changed after the iPhone came to the markets and Rims phones too both of those are increasing dramatically they are still not the best selling ones yet but I think they well get there soon specially the iPhone , and for your information my country is rich comparing to the other countries we in Qatar don't have special plans like what do you have in the USA we unfortunately paying the whole amount for the iPhone here "it costs nearly about 1000 $ " it's so freaking expensive I know !!...
We do have maybe 4 android phones htc magic Motorola milestone sonyericsson and samsung but they aren't popular here ..
i want to know which is better, the blackberry or the iphone??
im looking into buying either the 9700a(onyx delta), the 9800 slider if it comes out or the new Iphone which should be out around june 18...
i just dont know which is better.. i know the iphone is a lot easier to use but i just dont know which route to go.. someone please help me lol
What about this article: http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/10/npd-android-ousts-iphone-os-for-second-place-in-us-smartphone-m/
It was back in March and it said that Android surpassed iPhone in smartphone market share. What am I missing here?
@Lodorand that was about sales in the first quarter, not overall market share. i understand your confusion because it was often reported as overall market share. in other words, in the first quarter, more android handsets were sold than iphones, not a surprise considering that the 3GS was announced several months earlier and many buyers were anticipating new iphones in June.
@dandy1117
Ahh ok, thanks, that clears out the confusion. That article in March should have been clearer about it, or maybe I'm still slow in understanding market related mambo jumbo. Thanks again.
iPhone 4G has seen its share of leaks and controversies, now I give you the final , yes ! Final touch of features, hardware, software and consolidated in-sight of how is iPhone 4G or HD is going to be, read all and all on my post : See it before anyone else does ( Wink)

@moizsaleemvarind
Yes... yes it is.
P-P-P-P-PROPAGANDA!!
WWDC just around the corner. Coicidence???
any mention of Palm? Well, forget it :(
android ftw
Lunix has a smartphone OS???
...The More You Know!!!
I think the partisanship between Apple and Android fans (for the record, I am among the latter) comes down to this: Google and Android are staking their claim to a device that will one day eclipse the personal computer entirely. Netbooks, laptops, and desktops will one day be rendered obsolete by cell-phone sized devices which will communicate seamlessly with full sized screen and full sized keyboards when they need to, and transition to being pocket devices when they need to. Apple, on the other hand, appears to want to keep clear boundaries among its product lines and thus continues to place limits on the power of their handheld devices. The former vision is more appealing to technologists. The latter vision is more appealing to those who want a sexy interface for consuming internet content.
to me it's funny that mac users seem to relish being in a minority (they think they're special, bless them) but now that the iphone is doing so well market share is used to show how awesome the platform is.
@ajwoodhouse
You know the iphone is not only used by Mac users?
@Jerry Rawlings
Of course he doesn't know that, he's an idiot.
@Jerry Rawlings yep....I use an iphone 3gs and I'm a mac user who saw the light and switched back to windows. The whole 'cult of mac' is pathetic.
Google Android in comparison to the iPhone OS in general is an infant. However; this summer and next year are going to be very telling. This is because 4G and extended capabilities are being implemented in both. The one major fallback Apple will have is because Android is open source, whereas Apple OS 4.0 is still done through an approval mode system. The development therefore on Android will be much more rapid. I think this will go more like "IE" being represented by Apple, and Mozilla Firefox representing Android in comparison. Now you see IE, Chrome, Opera, and almost all browsers implementing internal devices/Apps like Firefox already has. I am not comparing any of the browsers in general here I am just saying the mobile devices in comparison are very similar to this kind of comparison.
@hated one learn to type properly, or are those the only words 'uncle steve' will let you use?
I surprised windows mobile still has that much market share! And I feel bad for Palm! (or HP)
Hahaha. I love it! Apple owns you!
Horray for yellow journalism!
I can guarentee an Apple employee wrote this up in 10 minutes with coloured crayons.
BTW, Googles share is most likely to rise WAY WAY up now that there are killer phones screaming to people.
Googles share has only started to make a difference after the release of the Droid and Nexus 1, and there are many other extremely hyped up phones hitting the market, its only a matter of time.
@Technologeee
The iPhone's market share was well over 9% at 18 months after its arrival. Thus, the iPhone was doing MUCH better than Android is AT THE SAME POINT IN TIME. So keep believing Android is going to take everything over, the facts tend to disagree with you.
regardless of the statistics... the "android army" continues to parade growth and progression. but never forget, the iphone is 1 device developed and delivered by 1 company. despite this (against a mobile OS pumped out in multiple flavors by multiple handset makers), it continues to garner mind-share. tomorrow (06/07/2010) will be another day to remember. i look forward to the transformation of the mobile market. this is where the serious innovation and future of tech is at.
@Eugene Rushmore
In the end with that type of support, Andriod will eventually pass the iPhone.
Think about it, I just read Metro PCS is getting an andriod phone, there are more people out there that can not afford an iphone or can not afford AT&T and they will buy Andriod, because it's iphone like and available to them.
I will seriously never understand how a consumer BUYS a product then is willing to waste time and look like a fool arguing "What is better?" or "Who is more popular?"
If you have an iPhone or an Android phone - you win nothing. No one cares unless they want to steal it. If anyone does care then they more slightly more foolish than you.
Fighting with total strangers in an anonymous manner is moronic. If we had to use our real names, this comment section would be empty.
Seriously, comments shouldn't be turned off, they shouldn't exist if this crap is the result. I will do my best not to actually visit the Engadget sites anymore, thank God for RSS feeds.
well i soon hope to see a market looking more like:
RiM 10%
Apple 33%
Android 33%
Windows 20%
Other 3%
Android and Apple are basically head to head and its just benefiting the consumers so i would like to see them at equal market share if not android pulling ahead so people start releasing the same Apps for Android&apple so that playing field gets leveled clear to the floor.
and lets face facts here Blackberry is shit...anything can load emails well, yes anything your lieing to yourself if you think otherwise.
Windows7 mobile seems to be solid and easily good for allot of buisness types who simply hate change, and then to those people who need a phone that can open all Microsoft office files w/o a problem
Now the "Other" market....well nothing is going to be snuffing palm and other stupid companies for not choosing Android or windows7...i mean LG, samsung cannot design a good competative smartphone OS for the life of them
