'iPhone vs Android' report finds Apple has three times Google's market share
Other intriguing figures include a high rate of loyalty among iPhone OS and Android users, with 80 percent of the former and 70 percent of the latter expressing a preference for the same OS in their next phone -- both rather shaming Microsoft and RIM's numbers, which were a mediocre 34 and 47 percent, respectively. Funnily enough, despite its inflammatory title, this report finds Android and iPhone users are more similar to each other than anyone else -- an uncomfortable fact for both parties to deal with, we're sure. The source link contains some more demographic comparisons, so why not go check them out and drop some sage analysis for us in the comments?

@jeff0529
See how stupid this guy is. How is gaining 7 to 9 percent better than gaining 26 to 28 percent, I swear they need to do IQ checks on the people posting here.
@Jerry Rawlings
The iphone os includes the ipad and ipod touch. Android is currently on primarily smarthphones. The ipad's sales undoubtedly helped those figures. Thus the faster growth of the android platform on smarthphones is more impressive than the iphone os total growth. If you don't understand this concept, than I would suggest questioning your own intelligence.
@jeff0529
Moron this is only counting iphones. If they included the ipad and ipod touch, the lead would be way bigger.
@MarkAnderson
Keep believing that if you want to nokia fanboy/engadget troll.
Android has been about for nearly 2 years. iPhone for about 3. Is that 1 year REALLY that big a deal to complain about?
Not to mention the original iPhone was a lot more expensive. I know it hurts Apple Haters. But remember its you guys who started this war.
The one year old iPhone 3GS is owning ALL of the Android devices put together from multiple carriers and makers. Quality not quantity. iPhone > RIM > WinMo > Garbage > Android
@Hated one
You make a point. Iphone is a great product and did come out with a clear advance in terms of user interface compared to competition.
Now on the other hand I tend to believe that history repeats itself. Iphone is good now, wonderful, But at the rate at which Android is evolving (basically mutating to a stronger form every 4 months) I prefer to bet my money on Google than Apple.
Most of all for me, the more I read about Apple policies as a company the more I despise it.
It's nice to see WinMo is still a strong contender. Hopefully Windows Phone 7 will boost the market share.
My guess is this survey/chart is in retaliation to the whole article that was on here a while ago about Google leap frogging Apple to take the number 2 position in the US for mobile OS.
http://www.engadget.com/2010/05/10/npd-android-ousts-iphone-os-for-second-place-in-us-smartphone-m/
This is probably their way of saying "booya"
Either way it doesnt matter I mean isnt it "To each his own" You like what you like.
@EmGee that wasn't what the chart said at all...that's what ignorant offensive Android fanboys and ignorant defensive Apple fanboys thought it meant. lol.
@AbsoluteDesignz labeling me as either is unwise lol. Im just making an observation as what it looks like, not taking sides. When they said android passed apple i thought "oh no now theyre going to look for an article that says the opposite", not necessarily engaget just any electronic blog in general. Now they are going to have another chart maybe a month from now who knows that says android has passes apple in something. Its a back and forth that feeds the fire. What im sayin is that if you like apple and there are many who do thats cool and if you like android which is still an "infant" not many know about it but still a few people like it too and thats alright too.
Ive noticed people are quick to sign anyone up to a fight of either side real quick here lol. Im only saying what I see here.
@hated one
You're missing a decimal point between the 8 and the 5, bro.
Does this really surprise anyone? Not many people even knew what Android was until Verizon began their Droid campaign. Apple has had a huge headstart. This is as rediculous as saying something like Blackberry has 3 times Android market share.
Um...duh.
What is astonishing news is that despite coming really late to the game, in the past quarter, more Android phones were sold than iPhones and as of the past quarter, Android phones are the #2 hottest selling platform second only to RIM. (That is only for the US).
Finally something that has Symbian on! Yeah.
@hated one
Whoever you work for then doesn't care about grammar. lern2spel
@hated one So 200mb will be enough for you? And how will a drop from $30 to $15 save you $60 a month?
good to see PALM making smartphone market share
@nanosman
Palm is who made all of this happen... it started with there black and white PDA's, palm pilots. they made great touch screens before most knew what a touch screen was. Palm = innovation
@benchase7 Isn't the Palm Pilot that thing that came out after the touchscreen Apple Newton?
If you're going to make a case for innovation based upon who is first, you should realize Palm wasn't first.
Palm was first with sync (well, sort of, Philippe Kahn's Starfish came earlier but didn't have any real data input capabilities), and IMHO sync was critical because people never would have bought PDAs if they had to enter all their data directly on the device instead of just syncing it over.
@spin cycle
i dont see "first" anywhere on my post. I simply implied they were successful with their PDA's. go back and reread if necessary...
@BrookLynnsFinest
Oh. You're one of those.
I'll just add you to the silly boy list and ignore you then.
@MarkAnderson From just one type of handset...compared to the swarm of HTC, Motorola etc android phones out at the moment. Thats what is so impressive. Plus at 18 months iPhone OS was already starting to dominate.
@hated one
Zune > iPod Touch
@Ignition1
You can only buy one type of Apple phone because Apple only release one type of phone. Everyone makes a choice as to what they want and if they choose an android phone they're not buying an iPhone. That's competition so whether Apple make one or a dozen products is kind of a moot point although you could make a good case for carrier considerations I guess.
Incidentally. since this is established user base, it'll include the iPhone and iPhone 3G which makes three models.
@hated one
What? What Droid doesn't, iPhone does? lol
classic.
Palm OS? Did they mean the old Palm OS or Web OS?
@hated one did u also forget that google has never sold software or electronics before? going into this apple already had a loyal following of stupid lemmings, urself probably included, that splurge on anything that steve jobs brings to market. And not all android devices were available rights away nor were they all intended for the same audience hence the difference in high end and low end android devices.
@hated one
What kind of place you go to work to where you have to get embarrassed just because you carry a phone that resembles an iPhone? Seriously? I pull out any kind of phone and people don't give me two hoots. How the hell do you get paid so much for having so much spare time (apparently). What job is this?
@MarkAnderson
One of what?
Oh lemme guess...you're gonna label me an "Apple Fanboy". If thats what you want to go by then feel free.
I'm in truth an Apple Supporter/Engadget Fanboy. I think Engadget is the best blog out there and I love this site and its writers.
As for tech products I love my xbox 360, I love my Windows 7 laptop, and I own an iPhone 3GS. I support lots of different companies when it comes to a wide range of devices. That includes Palm, Samsung, Intel, and AT&T.
I absolutely hate the android fanboys however (since they hate Apple by definition). And I most certainly hate the Engadget trolls who have nothing better to do than accuse Engadget of being Apple biased.
Thats my platform.
What surprises me most, is how come Windows Mobile still accounts for 19% of US marketshare! I thought they were already approaching single digit number. 19% is too much. I want to see WinMo become 9% and Android move to 19% soon.
How can BlackBerry be the #1 smartphone OS? :D
Over here in Slovenia almost nobody has a BB, i have no idea what makes them so popular in the US.
I'd guesstimate the market shares here as around 60% Symbian, 25% WinMo, 10% Android and 5% iPhone.
I own and love many Apple products, but since Jobs was stupid enough to stay married to ATT for so long, I first tried a POS Storm and now an Incredible which I absolutely love. Even if the iPhone came to Verizon tomorrow, I think I'll stay with Android.
@hated one blame Verizon for that, don't blame the phone...CDMA is < GSM...
by far.
@hated one are u really that stupid?? U just said it urself. Talking and surfing at the same time is something CDMA carriers can't do. Androids on tmobile and att could probably do that just fine. Hhow about wen the iphone came out it couldn't even voice search take vids or send MMS wen my old brick nokia could. Iphone was always behind the tech curve with basic functions , the truth hurts.
count me in on the android... now if only the phone would be delivered faster. The more competition the better, hopefully it will lead to innovation and better products.
Well I'm doing my part. Just bought my HTC EVO yesterday and it's awesome. I can't wait to use the Android eBay app to check the status of my iPhone 3GS auction :D.
@jedimacfan
And when I purchase my iPhone HD on Monday running OS4.0, I'll make sure to use it to surf to Engadget and see how many more were sold. Also, I'll check up on the fragmentation of the Android OS and App Market. Should be fun. Maybe I'll make a call while I'm doing it ;)
@redhineymonkey you do know all GSM phones can surf the net and make calls at the same time right? It isn't an iPhone feature though they tried to make it seem like one.
@AbsoluteDesignz
I do realize that. is Sprint GSM? Unless it changed overnight with the sale of the Evo, then I guess he can't surf and call at the same time. Unless he's in a 4G network. Where are those again?
@redhineymonkey
in far more places than any GSM provider. lol
@redhineymonkey I dunno how 4G works...I heard in some places it allows such a function but I'm not sure.
A more important question is, why the hell do people buy CDMA period.
@AbsoluteDesignz
I honestly ask myself that qustion everytime I see a Sprint or Verizon commerical. I really do.
@AbsoluteDesignz
The average consumer in the US has no clue what CDMA or GSM is. All they know is Verizon, AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile and the monthly fee for each. And as far as I'm concerned, as long as Sprint offers me the best monthly plan (or until the US moves away from carrier dependency), I know who I am going to stick with, CDMA or not.
At the end of the day, you still sound like an idiot. Now what?
@hated one
Really. You are the one that needs to STFU.
I don't see why it's uncomfortable. I'm an iPhone user first and foremost because of the iTunes/iTMS/Mac OSX ecosystem. I'm sure if nothing but the handset in my hands was a factor, I may very well choose an Android phone over the iPhone. If someone ripped my iPhone out of my hands and I had to choose something else, it'd be an Android phone, no doubt about it.
Much of this supposed animosity between iPhone users and Android users is propagandized by the fanboys and haters, and fueled by the likes of Engadget and Gizmodo.
@RawheaD
its funny.. the reason you choose apple (iTunes) is the reason i will never buy an apple product. No problem... just thought its kinda funny.
@RawheaD uprank.
I do not understand the animosity at all.
I also do not get people who feel they MUST stick to either Android or iPhone.
I love my Nexus One but if the iPhone HD had a more desktop like feel to the OS (main reason I love Android is that it feels like a mini PC) I'd switch in a heartbeat.
No harm, no foul.
@AbsoluteDesignz
agreed....and when apple releases the iPhone for t-mobile i'll be one of the first in line get mine and the same thing applies to WP7
@teesquared yep, I'mma have an upgrade in September...is the iPhone 4.0 is on T-mobile I see no point NOT to get it (it won't be though :-( )
@AbsoluteDesignz
having choice is ALWAYS best
