There are too many HD's right now. I don't think that Apple will use this name. They always try to distinguish themselves from the others and HD just doesn't sound right.

that's right, and it isn't even the 4th generation iPhone, remember the iPhone 3G has a firmware name of iPhone1,2. It only added a 3G radio and GPS, along with some exterior changes;the computer hardware staid largely the same

with the specs that I have been seen so far, it cannot be a 4G. It has a higher resolution screen, so I'd say it could be something with HD in it as shown in the engadget poll.

I think 3G will remain part of the name. I'm pretty sure it won't be called 4G unless they secretely added LTE chip. It won't be called 4, because it will be confusing when next 4G comes out. It won't be called just iPhone either, that would really confuse people.
Otherwise, iPhone HD also makes sense.

@WindowPhoneOwnsAndroid I think they refer to iphone 4G as the fourth generation iphone that would be coming this summer, the 1st original iphone in 2007,2nd iphone 3G in 2008, 3rd iphone 3Gs in 2009 and in 2010 iphone 4G what ever name they will call it...Has nothing to do with a 4G network.....
@roman7927 "HD" seems tacky, too... I like A4, its a statement of the speed, and the 4 implies the generation... Makes it sound like an Audi, too :-P
@JeremyBenthem i think you are way wrong on this one, Jeremy. the first (orig) iphone had different hardware and even a different look than the next iphone, the iphone 3G. the iphone 3G added 3G radio, GPS (you mentioned both of these), and it also had a different casing and it had updated software and updated firmware. it also had a different/faster processor and more memory. it also added the app store, new SDK, new APIs, and third party apps. how is this not a second gen device? diff hardware, diff internals, upgraded sw/fw, diff functionalities and new abilities = version 2.0....regardless of how it was referred to internally.
@keyone agreed! I think they would call it something like iPhone Pro (because its new design is quite similar to the macbook pro and also the full white iphone looks like a macbook) Lets wait and see now. Steve always has an innovative and unique name for his products.

iPhone HD makes sense to me. Besides the front-facing camera, the high-resolution screen is the main differentiating feature from the previous models, so I'd think they'd want to advertise that feature, especially if new apps take advantage of it.
@cookgoose True, but not even Apple themselves used that naming convention for the iPhone. If they use it now and call it iPhone 4G, they will surely confuse people regardless of whether it's about the generation, since it's arguable that a lot of people are aware or informed about 4G today.

It def. won't be called the iPhone 4g unless it actually has some kind of 4g radio chip in it, which it doesn't, cause that would confuse the hell out of people and I'm pretty sure they'd get tons of heat for false advertising...and "HD" is out because the "HD" branding has been raped, sodomized, and bastardized so many times you can even buy "HD" sunglasses now.

I don't know what it will be called but it probably have a name with no number. The smart thing for Apple to do would be to save 4G for when they have an LTE iPhone ready.

Yep, looks like this new iPhone will indeed be the 4th generation iPhone, and I wouldn't put it past them to call it the iPhone 4G just to falsely compete with real 4G phones.
@DoctarPeppar If you recall, Apple has told devs to start calling iPad apps "HD apps"...however, that hasn't actually happened yet...which leads me to believe that they weren't talking about iPad at all, but iPhone HD instead.
