The root, the root, the root is on fire! Well, not quite, but you just got another pretty splendiferous reason to
hack your EVO: android-wifi-tether, an app doing exactly what its name suggests, has now been confirmed to support HTC's 4G-capable phone. There were apparently some compatibility issues at first, but those have now been ironed out and superuser-empowered folks have been successfully pairing the free app and supersonic phone since. Might as well jump on board with this one -- Google has already said Froyo's native ability to do this might be circumscribed by carriers, meaning Sprint's likely to package any
official firmware upgrades in such a way as to
keep you paying for hotspot capabilities. And who wants to do that?
Time for me to download another 50gb this month over my cell phone.

@DefPoet
Before you do that let me baptise you first. Go take a bullet for the rest of us in the name of Evo.
@QuRa NOOOO Spam bot
Can't wait to give it a try!!!
Why is there even a discussion about this phone? iPhone HD gets official today! Only phone that matters
@dwest
lol @ you
@dwest
he's begging for a downrank...
@dwest
I'm excited for the new iPhone! It's finally gonna get a 4 megapixel camera. Hooray!!! /s
@dwest If they bring up the iPhone in a EVO post, they blew it.
I was hoping for a ROOT beer float
As long as I can have free hot spot capabilities and not just unlimited 4G but also unlimited 3G I would be all over this. But because I do travel a lot I need unlimited 3G. 5 gigs just doesn't cut it for me so until then I am sticking with T-mobile. I'd rather be throttled at 5 gigs then charged fees.
@Brian
The extra $10 you pay for the EVO data plan uncaps the 3G. It's something not often discussed on the internet because of the rage over paying extra for 4G access, but the EVO plan does indeed get both uncapped 3G *and* 4G.
@sonicmerlin Hm...you sure about that? I swore I saw that they have a soft cap of 5 gigs. Maybe that was their data only plan. Because if not, I plan on ordering 2 of these, one for me and the other for the wife. Been awhile since I have had Sprint and wouldn't mind going back.
@Brian
It's uncapped 4G & 3G
@rutter9 Good deal then. I guess I will be heading back to Sprint. I only hope with teether via root they don't notice your data. I can get up a few hundred gigs per month. Just last night alone with Clear I used up a few gigs streaming Netflix. Would do it through my work's network but they are monitoring that stuff now and they fired my manager and now are reporting to a new director who doesn't like my department very well so I don't need him a reason why we aren't needed within our company thinking we don't work.
Why oh why do people take such delight in jumping through hoops to make their device do what it's supposed to be doing all along? Collective masochism? You tell me.
Soon Engadget will be posting news of 7EEt 'sploits to make your phone dial someone without first routing the request past the Chief Federal Censor vetted by the Board of Trustees of Ma Bell (re-)Incarnate. Whoa!
Time to act, people. Pwn Yr Phone for crissake! You're supposed to be doing that from the moment you signed the contract anyway.
Iphone on a limited talk/text/2gb for $100 + $20 tethering.
Vs
Evo with unlimited talk/text/data AND tethering for $79.
Tough choice.
I love how most of the "haters" always say that you can't use a CDMA phone anywhere else in the world. I don't travel outside the US, so why does that matter to me?!
Anyway, I hope Sprint doesn't keep me from Android's perks!
This app is back on the Android
very cool.
