iOS 4 gold build now available to iPhone Developer Program members
You've got to wait a couple weeks to get this if you're the run-of-the-mill iPhone type -- but if you've ponied up the Benjamin for an iPhone Developer Program membership (who's probably suffered through a handful of iPhone OS 4 beta builds over the last few months), you're now able to download the Gold Master seed of iOS 4 directly from Apple's site. Let us know if you manage to sprout a front-facing cam on your 3GS to test FaceTime or anything cool like that, alright?
Update: We just updated to iOS 4 GM and haven't noticed anything particularly new or crazy yet. The install requires a beta of iTunes 9.2 to be installed as well, which adds in support for app folders and backups, but otherwise life is proceeding just like it did when we had beta 3 installed. We'll let you know if we spot anything as we go.

Staying on my jailbroken/unlocked 3.1.2 until the dev team does their magic for 4.0.
@impulse462
I'm excited about the Adobe Flash coming to the Anroid phones. Unfortunately Apple is still not giving us Flash. I'm very dissapointed Steve >:i
@gracefulspammer At least your name is partially honest.
P.S. You aren't graceful
@gracefulspammer
Oh, give it a rest. Remember when the G1 was going to beat the iPhone? Remember when it was the MyTouch? The Droid? The Nexus one? The Incredible? The EVO?
In two months the EVO will be old news and people will be gushing about the next Android that's going to "kill the iPhone", and in 4 months it'll be forgotten and replaced by yet another Android handset sent from the heavens to set us free.
Give. it. up.
@gracefulspammer
Troll tactic number one: Replying to the first comment just so people will read your comment.
@impulse462
Exactly. Once they jailbreak, cool. I don't mind not having multitasking... because I will have it with jailbreak. But as before, I'll use the new Apple features over the jailbroken ones - if (and only if) the Apple one is better. And example of this could be when copy-paste came out. Before, I used a jailbroken app.
@Piestrio
That's exactly what was trying to say yesterday and I was downranked into oblivion!! Beware the fandroids!!!
@gracefulspammer
No one talking about the EVO? joking right? Engadget is full of fandroid EVO lovers like foxconns full of guilt.
@gracefulspammer
There is no iPhone killer...
Idiot users who want a simpleton experience will always choose apple, no matter what the competition has to offer.
It will never die...so don't get your hopes up.
Android still needs to mature anyways, there's way too many issues (http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/list) -- 99% of all those bugs \ feature requests are present in other mobile OS's...
Look at the one about not being able to set a proxy for the wifi adapter...I mean, come on now...what kind of stupid fucking bug is that? But it's there, and it's been a bug for almost 2 years now...
@impulse462
I love homebrew.
@Piestrio That's the beauty of it. If you don't like an Android phone, wait another month or so and you'll see a better one. You don't have to wait a whole year to get features that have been out months. ;)
@gracefulspammer
Actually, I take that back -- this new iphone 4 only has VGA video output...major fail, who the fuck wants to watch 720p videos using a VGA port? It's like they won't adopt HDMI no matter what, even if someone held a gun to steve's head.
Prob only has 256 ram also...not very exciting...still
Many users crave the walled garden experience where the thinking is left up to phil schiller and jobs and they don't have to think for themselves.
@impulse462 You are the voice of reason. I am hooked on grooveshark.
I need a jailbreak. Thats just one of the many reasons.
The second reason is to make IOS a kick ass OS that single handledly beats android at their own game (proswitcher multitasking)
A jailbroken iphone is what android is aiming to be.
@FrankDTank Isn't it funny that you have to hack an OS and employ 3rd party developers to equal the native powers of Android? lol ... I'm not even off the Apple koolaid yet and I can see the logic in that...
Makes me wonder what the hell hard core Apple fan-boys are drinking/smoking...
@seankovacs
I find it funnier that half the Android phones out that have to load a cooked ROM in order to run anything over 1.6. And that new devices are still being released with 1.6. Man, that's rich.
@seankovacs
It's even more funny when you have to 'hack' your device just to get a firmware update, or when you have to overclock your device to get it to run smoothly. It's also funny when you can't play games for shit, and all your apps are hideous unless they are ports of apps which run better on iPhone OS.
Funny world we live in.
@Piestrio Couldnt possibly have said it better myself. Agree with every fibre of my being.
@Piestrio I dont know if you had the misfortune of watching the Eurovision song contest, but the fact is, populist taste is awful... generally speaking. iPhone has for a long time, offered less than its Android competitors, so from a standpoint of features, iPhone has been "killed" a while back. From the standpoint of sales, iPhone is still king, as it is still from the standpoint of EZ interface and slick workability. Im tired of hacking my Android hero and may give in to the freak controllish facist kingdom of apple and get the v4.
@DoctarPeppar Yawn at the elitism.
The iPhone is selling so well because it offers a user-friendly experience. While tech blog commenters may belittle those people for not being technically competent, they are too busy enjoying their phones instead of worrying about stupid things like memory management and rooting their expensive piece of technology for minor gains.
@impulse462
Same here. Folders and multitasking are nothing new here. Had that since the original iPhone.. But since I'm on AT&T iPhone 4 all the way
Downloading...
They did a great job so far. Bravo!
Sweet Jesus.
Last year I was able to install the 3.0 GM without a developer account. I hope I can do the same with 4.0!
@Eminemdrdre00 me too. I hope 4.0 GM can be installed on non-registered-developer-program iPhone
@katakbersalin Sorry, but you could last time because apple hadn't yet implemented the verification in iTunes, now when ever you go to upgrade, apple checks you devices UUID(universally unique ID) and if you aren't in the Developer system, it wont send back the code to decrypt the firmware.
@IrunLinux I have noticed that you can only do it in Xcode and you sometimes have to enter your developer account info in the Xcode Organizer.
@CTTHosting You can use iTunes just fine - I've been doing so for every beta version of 4.
To get it to work (on Mac), I held Alt while clicking the Restore button, then selected the IPSW there. Doing the same with the Update button does not work for me.
Although the I phone is awsome as is the new features we should expect as the tech changes so should the product. Good job and keep going apple should always be a step ahead and keep the comp looking at them as the leader in technology.
Actually Engadget, Gold Master build can be installed without a registered UDID! so, anyone can enjoy this a long as they can get their hands on the .ispw or .dmg files!
@jellotime91
Are you serious? Fucking sweeeeeeeeet!!
@jellotime91 Where do I find the sketchy link to dl this??
@rlew
We (the non Developers) are waiting on this as we type :)
@jellotime91 If that's the case would
our iPhones need to be JB, or can anyone install it?
Dev team get to downloading!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Sooo, your not going to cover all of the other stuff that was released just above and below that screen shot?
and a beta of itunes 9.2
mac only again :/ have to wait till i go into the office tomorrow
@Sepirioth If it is like the old firmwares, I think you can just use 7zip or another similar tool to extract the ipsw
@Air2ground
extract yeah, but it wouldnt actualy install it. I tried with all of them.
Now if only i can get copy of this :/
Not a paid Developer :(
@kifac wait a couple hours... it'll show up :P
@greezyg
ahah somebody understood what i meant :P
Thats exactly what im doing.
furreal where these torrents at
@GramGuy
Hurry the "Fudge" UP >=(
Isn't ios a cisco copyright?
@DoctarPeppar
http://www.engadget.com/2010/06/07/apple-licensing-ios-name-from-cisco-acquiring-facetime-mark/
ITs all there my friend :)
@kifac
Ha, I see they purchased FaceTime as well...I remember them, they used to make some kind of IM software and had demo bots on AIM\AOL.
@DoctarPeppar
IOS just means internal Operating System, alot of other network manufacturers in fact run a modified version of Cisco IOS, and Cisco is ok with it.
I guess we'll see what happens...
@Shlooky
Uh, no...iOS means internetworking (not internal) operating system, and it was developed by cisco a long ass time ago as a platform for their routers \ switches. It looks like they a licensing the name to apple (just read the link the dude above posted). They have been using IOS as a brand name for their routers \ managed switches for at least 20-30 years now...and the other smaller companies probably lisence it from them, or are actually owned by cisco lol.
Hey Engadget, did Apple say when they will release iOS4 for 3G and 3GS?
