iPhone 3GS drops to $99, 8GB only -- iPhone 3G discontinued
We've already seen the iPhone 3GS drop to under a $100 at Walmart, and Apple has now expectedly made that the official price point following the announcement of the iPhone 4. What's more, the 3GS will now only be available in an 8GB version (it's still not clear if both colors will be available or not), and that naturally also means that the iPhone 3G is now officially discontinued. Of course, there's also still quite a few of the current iPhone 3GS models floating around out there, and AT&T will be doing its best to clear those out -- you can now grab a 16GB 3GS for $149, and a 32GB 3GS for $199 on a two-year plan "while supplies last."

I think it'd be worth saving the extra hundred bucks for the iPhone 4.
@werty1432k
apart from the resolution, there is nothing worth mentioning

I'm happy with my Streak which I got 2 days ago! Truly amazing - I know many who will be after this phone (particularly a colleague at work who spent £450 buying his iPhone... seriously). I still think its got some way to catch up with Android in terms of features - but who am I to argue with sales figures? ( *sigh* ).
On another note, Steve, are those new jeans? Woah, this must have been a big announcement!
@werty1432k
As a pre owner, i think the new hardware is sick...
The glass is sooooo nice, and it's soo thin..It's thin enough to add a slider keyboard.. but, i'd be willing to compromise. I really like the glass, it's beyond amazing!
im giving palm till this time next year to blow me away.. if not then iphone 5/android 4/wm8/other here i come..
I wonder how much is the unlocked version?
it will be $1000
I pretty sure Iphone 4 will sold better than all previous iphone.
UK/Europe pricing?
@d0mth0ma5
UK will be as it is now but just switch the 3G with 3GS and 3GS with iPhone 4.
This means £190 on contract and £450 PayG. Still in that realm of 'that's too f*ing expensive for a phone'.
I know the US has tax on top but $199 shouldn't come close to £190. It should be £149 and £399 or something like that.
@TinWard The iPhone 3GS ranges from £Free to £300 depending on the length and type of contract. I think you're right about it being the same, just looking for some confirmation, which I guess we'll get at the pre-order next week.
This is going to kill the KIN even more.
@AckbarsFist
what has the KIN have to do with this, that was designed for a totally different market, WinMo7 is iOS's the ideal competitor, not KIN
@commenter7
iOS's ideal*
@commenter7 It's the same price.
@AckbarsFist
That is not my point, and no they are not the same price.
@commenter7 Uh, yeah they are the same price. http://www.verizonwireless.com:80/b2c/store/controller?item=phoneFirst&action=viewPhoneDetail&selectedPhoneId=5291
If you're gonna pay $99 for a device and have to pay for data, which would you choose.
...poof. My iPhone 3GS is now worth little lol.
@mpeters13
Your 3GS is worth little?? I'm just lucky I sold my old 3G when I did!! :-)
are we ever going to see a 64 GB version? Or is the flash memory too expensive?
@NiKoLaSm
This is what I was waiting for also. Pretty disappointed that a larger storage amount wasn't announced.
@NiKoLaSm
Yeah, I am hovering at just below 32gb of stuff on my phone and would prefer to not have to worry about it....
Hey Guys, Can you find out if there is an option to buy them off contract?
those prices mean nothing if they don't tell you how much you will be paying every month and for how long
i hope they lower the non-contract prices for the 3GS, they go for £370 ish on ebay which is loads for a crap phone. I'd take a HTC Desire any day over the 3GS.
Wow, the 8gb 3gs at 99$ on contract is a ripoff, normally the same phone with more memory would be 99$ more, not a whole new level phone. This is much bigger than the difference between the 3g and lousy 3gs.
What's with Apple's disdain with 16 GB? How come they cannot offer the same 3GS in that capacity?
@croquembouche11
Because they want you to buy the 4.
@croquembouche11
Because they want to offer the 4 for 199 and they probably can't pull of a 3gs with 16g at a price point less than that with their usual profit margin, so you just jump up to the 4g, which honestly is a better deal anyway. Besides, if you had a choice between a 3gs at, say 149, and a 4 at 199 you would be crazy not to get the 4.
So now what? The 3GS 16gb is a commodity item? Why would they discontinue that model too? I was actually hoping the new Iphone 4 to have more memory.
All in all, I like the phone, so I might actually get it.
Any hint of no-contract price? Unlocked? Geez, Apple needs to wake up and be a true gamechanger instead of bowing to AT&T.
@pika2000 Yeah cause that worked so well for Google didn't it?
@Turbojugend Errr, yeah, it worked so well on other countries. Unlocked != no-subsidy. Look at Singapore. All carriers carry iPhones, subsidized, unlocked, and Singtel's cheapest plan has 12GB data. Oh, Singtel also supports tethering at launch of 3.0, last year. Let's compare that to the situation in the US now, still locked, AT&T only, & 200MB cap on the cheapest plan, and just started to support tethering (2GB cap). Not going great at all for us in the US now is it.
Since when has there been at 8 GB 3GS?
@Sirobin LOL. You're right! Everybody missed that!
Here we go again with all the entitlement people. When are people gonna learn that they cant always have what they want and they shouldnt be able to either. So tired of people saying they should be able to have this and only pay this. If you cannot afford to have a certain phone and pay what the carrier tells you to then maybe you should just have another device. Not sure why the cell phone industry customers are like this more then any other industry.
So you mean to tell me they went out of their way to make an 8GB 3G S?
i LOL'd at the memory (16gb & 32gb) seriously? Why is Apple raping ppl with ultra low memory? Micro SDHC wins again.
@refink I wouldn't consider 16GB/32GB as "ultra low." A 16GB micro SDHC will run you for at least another $40, and that's only for a slow class 2 card. 32GB micro SDHC cards will run you for an extra $90.
Well that makes sense considering we have been super low stock of all our iPhones as of late in our area... Can't wait for release day. It's gonna be crazy.
Ok Steve, who in the hell is going to want the 3GS now that the iPhone 4 is out? Even if you don't have a 3GS already, why not pony up the extra 100 bucks? and you only offering the 8GB model? smh.
Now seems like a great time to find a cheap new/used 3GS to replace my iPod Touch 2G.
To me, it seems like they just reused the PowerPoint (err...whatever Apple calls PowerPoint) from last year when the 8GB 3G went on sale. However, it's on Apple's site, too. No way they epic failed in the PowerPoint AND then copied it to the site, right??
now i know my 16gig 3GS is gonna be special...i really wish they had made a 64gig Iphone 4 especially when it does 720p HD recording.
