A backside-illuminated 5 megapixel sensor is about to grace
the new iPhone's rear, equipped with an LED flash and 720p / 30fps video recording. Tap to focus while recording video will also be rolled out in the iPhone Quattro, and Steve Jobs is keen to impress on us all that although the megapixel count has grown, the quality of images has apparently improved. That's what they all say. iMovie for iPhone will add more sophisticated video editing options, but they won't come for free -- a $4.99 tithe will be required. This is moving things along, to be sure, but why is the iPhone 4's upper storage limit still stuck at 32GB? A more generous apportionment of memory would've gone very nicely indeed with that HD video mode.
@Tes
Very true Tes. I wonder how the competition will respond to those new features. Although i believe about HD video recording that there are already phones that do that. However high res is something that i liked a lot.
Evo Ftwww HDMI 720p 4.3 inch screen Come on iPhone 3.5 is old news 5mp camera that's it guess this is a fanboy only update to the 3gs
@lyrik08
The EVO's video quality has been said to be lacking, even with the 8MP sensor.
@ebgolfin Because they stuff all these megapixel into these phones with small sensors.
The Nexus One is probably the best Android phone with a camera...
@ebgolfin
well that mock up picture up top isn't what you should be expecting either ... hype ... shows up around every corner.
notice that "this is what an iPhone picture looks like (under ideal conditions)" disapeared ... because it was a mock up. would be a miracle if it looked that good. ... will hold my breath and the rest of my thought until I see it acctually in action ... but much like the EVO cameras ... think some people might be a bit disappointed. tho the EVO does shoot a solid "720p" video in good conditions ... it was obviously hyped up as more. "replacing your carry along camera / camcorder" i remember hearing. maybe not so.
@Seven2k i love my evo but did u have to troll in theis post you loser
Wait, so the new iphone is just an Evo 4G with apple written on it?
Okay....so how does this compete with the lot of andriod phones with the same or better specs. And not only that they are going to be competeing with new Palm and Windows Phones.
@InfDaMarvel
It's shiny and has an apple on the back.
I'm new to iPhone but I'm slowly becomin a huge apple fan....the new iPhone coverage doesn't mean much to me because I'm using the 3gs and have decided to keep it and update to os 4....I'm waiting for the announcement of the release date of it! (os 4)
5mp camera? please? They'll release one in 2 years with an 8 MP cam and charge the apple followers and extra 200. This what apple does. Hold back...release something thats 80% done...then over the course of a few years, they release something that is what the original should have been and then call it a LEAP. iPad users...get ready for the new iPad with a camera...it'll be 200 more too. Good ole apple....only in America can a company make it stylish to get less and pay more for it. SMDH.
@Jomah7777
Well I can tell u this... The 5mp on iPhone looks alot better than the 8mp on the evo. And yay also includes the video as well.
@Jomah7777 Are you not looking at the pricing? Specs go up, prices stay the same, older model's pricing goes down.
This is hardly new with Apple.
@Freddy2Fred
Are there any sample images/videos to back up your claim? Can you please share them with us?
@GGG
I have use the evo last sunday from my friends. The 8mp camera looks good but it does not look like a 8mp but it looks good and the hd video, compared to the other phones that I have seen, the evo hd recording is a piece of crap. Looks horrible. It's only a standard high quality video but it does not look hd at all. The iPhone always been a superior when it comes to their cameras and video. Obviously they gonna be good with pictures and video as well. Don't be surprised if it beats the evo.
Why would anyone want to edit movies on such a small screen? And with a 2GB cap it isn't like you'll really be able to upload a bunch of movies on the go anyway.
@malexandria1
What is this 2GB cap of which you speak? There certainly is no AT&T cap. It's just pay as you go with no cap. Do you seriously think people are going to upload 2GB movies over 3G networks? I think most people will transfer to their computers over a USB cable.
@Jean Marc
Dont get mad kiddo. Just stating something.
iMovie pretty cool but I myself dont really record that much on my phone. Even with the pre and its similar video recording app i just used it once. I would rather have it on camera and edit it on my desktop.
@Seven2k
I think Evo has the worst 720p video from a phone, if you check samsung or sony phone that do 720p they do better jobs,
just wait for someone make a comparison.
Am I the only one that thinks a 5 mp camera is weak? Sure it's better than a 3 mp, but look at the EVO, a 8 mp and you'll see even more phones with higher than 5 mp in months. The iphone4's camera will be out of date before its 3 months old.
Nothing spectacular - added feautures that I had on my Omnia HD more an a year ago. Wait to go Apple, way to go :lol:
@jenjaman no one even knows what a Omnia HD is! HA! Score for you, geek!
@techlord
The camara on the evo sucks... I used it yesterday. It's 720b.... 720 Bootleg. And the 8mp does not look like 8. It looks less than that.
People here thinking this camera is worse because the MP count is lower are just plain ignorant about anything related with cameras.
I guess those of you think your 12 MP phone camera takes better pictures than my 10 MP DSLR.
@augustofretes
Nokia N8 has a bigger sensor size than the iPhone 4 and 12 MP. So yes the N8 will take better pictures.
@augustofretes
No, its more related to sensor size, lens quality and processing software. Which is why the Nokia N8 smokes the Iphone, at least in the camera department.
@Freddy2Fred
I love how you say the EVO Camera suck's. I have an EVO and the quality might not be as good as a video camera. But it sure does beat the hell out of 98% of phones on the market right now. It isn't a camera. It is a phone. If you want to make awesome videos buy a camera. Or wait until the year 2097 when the cameras are attached to the back of our eyes.
Written from my EVO.
@JordanClay correction, the EVO HAD the best camera and video recorder on a phone until today. Couple that with Apple's software, and it's a big winner!
@StickyD We'll see when there's an actual impartial review done. Now, where can we get one of those...
yay 720p... with a terrible pea sized cell phone lense and sensor, not to mention a terrible bitrate.
what a joke its funny people hear 720p and BOOM its great
@d889 It's better than any current phone out now! You're just an Apple hater, so I'll just discard any bit of insight you provide. The EVO's 720p video looked choppy and horrible in the demos I saw. Like Apple said, it's all about the software developed for a camera and lens. Keep on hating!
@StickyD
i never compared it to any other phone, i realize this is a cell phone, if you want quality you use a real camera.
@StickyD
Are you insane? The 2010 Iphone does not beat these 2007 & 2009 phones, as far as the camera goes:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nokia_N86_8MP
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nokia_N82
When the N8 comes out, the iPhone will be even further behind.
Maybe the iPhone comes out on top compared to a nexus 1, or an Evo. Not compared to these phones though.
@LetsHaveWaffles More megapixels means nothing... http://www.nytimes.com/2007/02/08/technology/08pogue.html
What I want to know is if the iMovie app is going to work with the 3GS. The slide showing the app in the app store specifically said "designed for iphone 4".
That iMovie App is kinda sweet.... but don't think I'd really want/need to edit video on my small ass phone screen. Even on my Evos for 4.3" thats ridiculous. I feel like my laptops 17" is too small sometimes
It's the backlit sensor which intrigues me most. Hopefully this will address the crappy night/low light performance of the existing camera setup.
there have been plenty of phones recording at 720p but the video record around 20 fps, even the htc evo records at 20fps. this iphone records at 30fps
@notit
isnt the evo 24fps?
@notit
The Iphone CAN record up to 30fps, but most likely will hover around 25 frames.
iphone 4= nexus 1
@P Z
Well spotted, there are 4 iPhones and 1 Nexus
Here we go, another megapixel counter. As stated millions of times before, higher megapixels doesn't always equate to a better picture. It's all about the software and lens. Just look at the EVO's 720p video recording! It has a 8megapixel camera and the videos I've seen are grainy and choppy! Even the iPhone 3GS's 3 megapixel camera took better pictures than most 5 megapixels (in good light). Add in the LED flash, 5x zoom, and Apple's software, and you have a winner!
@StickyD
Well, Iphones have continually been beat by Nokia cameraphones, so I am not getting my hopes up, dont think the Iphone 4 will beat the Nokia N8. Which had a free video editing suite by the way, not that bogus 5 dollar extra.
@jawman
according to androidcentral.com its 20fps
http://www.androidcentral.com/android-vs-iphone-4-specs
hdmi out? didnt think so.
Doing film editing 720p space will be at a premium. I really think that 32gigs is not enough. I like the idea of more advanced video editing, however the 3.5 screen will not cut it (get the pun). I'm sure there will be a 64gig next year, that will be 4g on Verizon. Apple loves to these little updates to keep their fanboys happy, and coming back every year.
I personally don't like the new layout of the Iphone. The graphic are amazing. The shape pushed me away, I am going to stick with getting the Evo 4g from sprint.
