iPhone 4 hits FCC, becomes world's second announced pentaband 3G phone
You really can't fault Apple's timing. While the iPhone 4 may have slipped out in physical form way ahead of its launch today, the FCC docs for it were kept under seal until this very moment. So what do we find out from the disclosure? The Commission identifies the fourth-gen iPhone as model number A1332, and also confirms that it carries a Bluetooth module, that precious 802.11n capability that's still missing from most phones, and -- here's the good bit -- five bands of 3G internet compatibility: UMTS I/II/V/VI/VIII (evidence after the break). Which is all sorts of interesting, since Apple omits one of them -- the 800MHz band VI, most commonly used in Japan -- on the iPhone 4's specs page. Feel free to speculate away on what that might mean. Sadly, the reports grow rather dry from there, with nary a word on how banging the new IPS screen is or how well the FaceTime video chat works -- guess we'll just have to figure those things out for ourselves. Oh, and the first announced pentaband beastie; why it's the Nokia N8.

Thankfully, there's this.

Wonderful when old Jobsy starts announcing new iCrap.
i knew that this was going to be all about the iphone, but still steve i was a little disappointed, i thought that there would have been some other surprise, since the iphone was already leaked....
@Hell Angel
Lets just hope AT&T isn't going to screw us by raising the price or capping their unlimited Data Plan. Somehow I know they are planning something cause I know they aren't gonna let people video chat back and forth or use SKYPE at will.
My lock/unlock buttons keep wearing out...
@Hell Angel Yeah, this WWDC was a little uneventful.
Everything they showed off was known. Their one more thing was the front camera app, which isn't really a one more thing...because they had shown use the camera in the beginning.
It's more of the same. It's enough for many people, but not enough to convince others. And that's fine.
@Hell Angel
Just to put it out there ... http://www.engadget.com/exclude/Apple ... for all those who may get tired of all the Apple news this week will bring ... HEY!!! Engadget is giving away a TomTom with a Darth Vader voice!!!
@Hell Angel - Like a CDMA/EVDO band for a Verizon iPhone? LOL! CDMA and its tech (data or voice) bondo buddy EVDO sux! I see why they WILL NEVER make an iPhone for it. Its all about an LTE iPhone now V-fans. See you in 2011! "
PS Down rank away but before you do ask Qualcomm about the creation of EVDO as an add-on for old ass CDMA. And Hey, AMPS had a data add-on to call CDPD, (what you know bout that? ;^)...
As an IPhone 2G user - overall I am happy. Its definitely worthy of an upgrade for me. The only disappointment I find is that the largest capacity is 32GB - why oh why? In addition to all the movies/music etc I want to store, the addition of HD video means I need all the space I can get! 64GB version would have been the icing on the cake.
@Hell Angel
How is this pentaband 3G? I don't see no Tmo/Wind support for 1700
@Hell Angel
I'm still waiting for Engadget to interrupt Apple's news run with some crappy Android phone covers the way the did Android's I/O news run with some crappy iPhone phone covers. Engadget?? Wouldn't it be fun??
Gotta say, that new iPhone is pure hottness--but I'd be stuck in a closed platform without the cloud.
Then again, even with all the options of Android, all the nice phones, the cloud, the open-source-upgrade-my-phone-for-free-every-few-months pace of Android doesn't tend to come with pure polished goodness of the iPhone.
Hard to pick. I will wait and see what Google's partners do over the next few months--by then we may not remember the Evo for the next line of 1.5 giga-hurts my brain to fathom these new phones are coming.
@Hell Angel
Just because the iPhone got leaked and spoiled it for you doesn't mean that they have to come out with something that they weren't going to in the first place.
@Vladislav
As an other commenter just pointed out (and you question yourself) that FCC report is doubtful. The iPhone 4 is a quad-band 3G device.

@Hell Angel
uh..Engadget, according to apple.com, the iPhone4 is a quad band NOT a penta band. Please remove this article since it is essentially a wrong headline.
@Sax25 agreed! I think we were all expecting a 64GB iPhone today and because I didn't see one I'm mulling over waiting another year since I've already got 42GB of Music and 303GB of TV Shows
@Frankenstein Black World's best CDMA carrier or world's worst GSM carrier? You decide. Seriously, I wish Verizon would have went UMTS but why should we expect them to switch at this stage? I don't see the need to fanboy for AT&T, but I guess you're a glutton for punishment.
@Plazmic Flame
wiki cellular frequencies, it is pentaband UMTS or 3G not GSM 3G bands. So it has two extra than the 3G, 3GS. AT&T uses 850 (V) 1900 (II) and 2100 (1) which is why apple only has to make one phone for the world (all the international carriers beside NA that is Europe, Asia uses 2100 for their 3G. The extra 2 bands for UMTS (3G); 900 (VIII) includes pockets in Asia Oceania so New Z can use the same phone. 800 (VI) is used by NTT Docomo only in Japan. Since Apple signed with Softbank (which uses 2100) in Japan it's curious that they did that in respone to the editor's question. Since NTT Docomo is Softbank's comepetitor it would be as if apple added AWS (IV) which supports Canadian carrier (a valid reason to include it) but T-Mobile uses it. AND I THINK THAT'S WHY. Several Candian carriers can sign agreements with Apple but I think it is a population (the population in Canadia is like the population of NYC). It's as if AT&T is concerned enough with T-Mobile (even as the 4th largest carrier) that they can influence Apple not to add that band (again, even though it could sign with the Candian companies (WIND). But yet adding the extra band for NTT suggest to me that Apple would love to make ony ONE phone for every GSM based UMTS 3G carrier in the world. My take on the Japanese carriers is that their tight control of what phone can be connected to their network that nobody would JB and unlock the phone from Softbank (which has the exclusive obviously) to use it on NTT (it's the Japanese culture I suspect) but here hell yaa, I would definitely JB and unlock the AT&T tight grip and use it on T-Mobile's bomb 3G network. That's why I think AWS band (IV) was definitely deliberately left out by Apple with AT&T being the stakeholder (Apple would have loved to include the AWS (IV) band). It seams AT&T has some serious clout over Apple.
@naashak No, the phone is pentaband. The FCC application MUST have the correct bands. The website just doesn't say it because that would make it compatible with T-Mobile and people would unlock it thinking it would work (it still does though)
If only they would've snuck in T-Mobile's 3G band in there...
@JWCole Exactly. I would love to not have to pay $30 more per month by switching from AT&T to T-Mobile.
@JWCole any love for verizion/sprint users?
@JWCole Including the t-mo band would probably double the jail-broken devices. I know I would JB for this.
@JWCole
The bigger problem is the damn SIMlock.
@htd the EVO
So does that mean it works on Tmobile USA bands or no?
@Joe McG No. T-Mobile USA is on AWS bands (UMTS Band IV).
@Joe McG No, it lacks the 1700 MHz 3G band.
"I find your lack of band disturbing" :P
Comparing N8 to iPhone is like comparing Apple to Orange. Oh wait.
@Supply8
In this case, the iPhone is from Apple, and the N8 is orange (and green and blue).
So, spot on!
@Supply8
Other way round.
@tocharius
supply8 knew that. Hence the "oh wait..."
he made a funny :)
EVO
@AlexDeLarge
...is a phone, yes we know that, so is the iPhone 4...
verizon would be nice. : (
@Coke Verizon is CDMA. Get it over with.
@pika2000 the N8 will happily talk to CDMA too .. does the iPhone 4 auto switch between GSM and CDMA as well as cover the frequencies?
@goseki
The N8 does no such thing.
@inept Yes it does. "Automatic switching between WCDMA & GSM bands" That's from the wikipedia article.
@sensori WCDMA isn't what Verizon uses.
@sensori WCDMA is another name for UMTS. Yea, it's dumb, but that's how it is.
@cloud858rk All 3G networks (GSM/TDMA and "CDMA") utilize CDMA channels for efficiency. One of the reasons why Verizon appears to have a better network is that its legacy networks also use CDMA technology and are natively backward compatible with its 3G protocols. Managing AT&T's 3G GSM and its 2G/EDGE GSM backbone is much harder than managing Verizon's network. FYI: LTE doesn't use CDMA or TDMA channeling.
do they have 1700/2100 in there?
I'm an apple fan boy... And I'm really getting tired of all this news.
FU..!
@JonsMind
On the day of WWDC you expect them not to post on topic? And youre not an apple fanboy if you dont like apple news
@JonsMind Pipe down, it's WWDC day. And they've posted a couple of things I didn't already know from the keynote, so I'll let them have this one.
@uck Im not an apple fanboy. And I like apple news...
@r3loaded
Lol you say it like its a national holiday or so.Still I'm pretty excited.
Sweet.
The phone is pretty nice, just not for me. I know many friends who would love the phone.
Glad they didn't announce for Verizon....
HAHA HATERS....
So what was the first one? Just curious!
@edwinsmith
