iPhone 4 vs. EVO 4G... fight!
If you put your ear up to the screen, you can hear these two beasts snarling at one another. Hit up the gallery for more shots, along with some iPhone 3G for good measure. Let's see how they stack up on the big stats, shall we?
Not enough for you? We'll have a big comparison of all the "majors" for you shortly.
Now, there's a lot left to learn about Apple's FaceTime video chat service. For instance, they called it "open," but they also only mentioned a zero-configuration iPhone 4 to iPhone 4 calling setup. Meanwhile Qik can make calls between EVO 4Gs, but also stream video live to the web (while the iPhone needs to record and then upload to get "social" using its official apps). No mention was made of the FaceTime call resolution, but given the fact that the front camera is merely VGA, it's probably streaming at the same 640 x 480 that Qik is constrained to in the free service. However, a premium version of Qik for $5 a month lets you go beyond that resolution, using the EVO's higher resolution cameras. Perhaps the largest distinction is the fact that the EVO can stream video calls over 3G or 4G, while the iPhone 4 is constrained to WiFi for the time being. Naturally, we expect other video calling apps (Skype, please?) to crop up on both platforms and give these initial offerings a run for their money.

Each device has it's little perks but when asked which one i'll go with i have to go back to the most basic function. These devices are phones and phones should be graded first on making phone calls. I've been a customer of at&t for the last two years with an iphone 3g, then 3gs. At least 30% of my calls were dropped on at&t and data dropped to edge at least half of the time which is unacceptable. I used to be what most of you would call an apple fanboy but after years of terrible phone and data service, you have to start wondering why you support them. It's hard to be a fan of the iphone when i'm having to constantly call back everyone saying the same thing "sorry, at&t sucks" I now have the sprint evo and not one dropped call since june 4th! 4g data is amazing! sometimes i fall back to just 3g but even that is better than at&t's 3g/egde shenanigans. Obviously my vote with be for the evo and more importantly sprints excellent coverage. Downmod me all you want but at&t's dropped calls are as well known as the iphone itself and that's pitiful. go EVO!
Evo for techies and people who understand smartphones.
iPhone 4 for ordinary ppl like mom and grandma
So to sum this up the EVO is obviously bigger yes we all know that it does not feel uncomfortable or to large for that matter.. I know because I have one. It has better cameras and not too long from now will have better internet with 2.2. The EVO is better at true multitasking and has a more intuitive interaction user interface. The messaging app on the EVO is a convenience to be able to view additional mail including the g mail so to. There is nothing wrong with the app so it was irrelevant to mention anything negative about it. If you don't like it u can use Ur browser to read any mail. The battery life is that of most other smart phones . The EVO has 1 gb internal memory and 32 gb external. Both phones have a touch keyboard simply put, they will both take getting use to. IPhone came out first so it will have more apps. The iPhone has more internal memory and a little better display not to forget the less quality cameras. The EVO is 59.99 individual plan plus 10 for unlimited 4g. So that's 70. If u want hotspot feature its an extra 30 a month. But most people just want a phone, I think the hotspot feature is what it is -luxury feature/personal preference. Sprint has unlimited everything, Apple does not. Sprint has 4g Apple does not. So its $70 w/ unlimited everything vs $115 with limitations hmmm....KEEP IN MIND THAT NEW ANDROID PHONES ARE RELEASED MULTIPLE TIMES ANNUALLY AND USUALLY THEIR BETTER THAN THE PREVIOUS ONE. WHILE APPLE RELEASES 1 NEW IPHONE A YEAR. THIS MEANS THERE WILL BE A BETTER ANDROID PHONE THAN THE EVO AND IPHONE 4 WHICH MEANS APPLY ALREADY LOSES AND COMPARING IT'S SPECS TO THE EVO NOW IS STUPID. The EVO has better specs especially the cameras. It's so annoying that the overrated iPhone has to be compared to every other phone. Once mass communications are mature enough to stop supporting/reporting on the iPhone -better phones will gain the light.
The iPhone 4 ownz the Beavo...
Who wants a brick on a stone age CDMA network that's worthless outside the USA...
Pffttttttttt
Engadget, you need to explain where the article,
"iPhone or EVO: which one should you get?", went to and WHY you removed it!!!
@brittonx
I agree... I voted EVO and as soon as i did, I got a white screen and tried looking for it again and NOTHING
@brittonx
there is alot of talk to that its been pulled over engadget being biased and fanboys themselves. I cant see it there must be a reason as engadget is the most respectable gadget and tech site on the globe. Being as respectable and as loyal to their viewers I'm sure we will hear something soon about the pull, right engadget.
@brittonx
I'd like to hear something about this as well
I'm so EVO that to iphone I need to Android...lol
I'm looking at upgrading to my first high end smartphone and I'm torn between the EVO and the iPhone4. I've been again the iPhone since the 3G and seriously want to experience an Android device, but it seems like Apple may have something with this phone (dependant on the reviews). Any suggestions or insight?
@sereneturmoil
Go with the best network...for most of the US, AT&T is not the best.
Sprint has the best plans and the best service.
has NO ONE takin in the fact of what provider owns which phone? well....for all of us that are in the states.....it really all depends on what service provider you have...cause as much as i would love to have an EVO...i will NEVER go to sprint as a service provider. ATT has always been the best when it comes to speed and everything else....so looks like iPhone 4 for me. they both are really great phones, but i really dont see anyone breaking a contract of any kind with att just to go to shitty sprint. if i could have an EVO with att...that would be money! but i dont mind the iPhone..it really is just on preferences since the phone are very equally matched.
@BlizZunT
Where in the US are you? You must not be in or near a major metropolitan area. AT&T service SUCKS in LA, SF, NY...the list goes on...
I ALWAYS know when a friend has AT&T..."garble, garble"..."Hello?"..."AT&T, huh?"..."Yes"
"Friends don't let friends drive AT&T"
THE FACTS:
#1 – BIGGER is not always BETTER
The EVO 4G has a 4.3 inch screen with a 800 x 480 resolution, while the iPhone has a 3.5 inch screen with a 960 x 640 resolution…you be the judge
#2 – Users RIOT
If you google EVO 4G battery life, you will find several links with titles such as “20 Tips to improve battery life on your EVO 4G”, with several people posting the times of their battery life.
A few quotes I found:
“mine lasts about 4 hours and it's done.”
“Have to charge 3 times a day!!!!”
“Get the power management app for 99 cents. It works great!”
“Hey. Just hang on for a few more weeks and grab one of these 3500mAh batteries.”
And Since everyone loves to talk about specs and how accurately they allow us to compare phones, lets just throw down the iPhone 4 specs for the new battery:
Talk Time 7 Hours
3G Browsing 6 Hours
WiFi Browsing 10 Hours
Audio Playback 40 Hours
Video Playback 10 Hours
Standby 300 Hours
*NOTE: Could not find any specs for the EVO 4G from Sprint that stated the battery life, similar to the ones stated for the iPhone 4 in order to accurately compare specs. If anyone can find these let me know so I can make as fair a comparison.
#3 – DESIGN
“What's so amazing about the design? Both are rectangular, both have rounded corners, both have cameras, both have buttons, both have 3.5mm jacks, both have standard jacks....oh wait, no, the iphone has a proprietary jack. So much for great design.”
What’s so amazing about the design? Both are rounded, both have 4 wheels, both have a gasoline engine, both have standard lug nuts…oh wait, the Porsche has a proprietary single lug that requires a separate tool. I guess I’ll just stick with my Buick LeSabre…
#4 – BIAS UNBIAS
“The difference is that I'm not a "journalist," so I don't have to be objective.”
“…I know 4 women with it and have zero complaints about the size. My GF got one last night…
(Wait… are you talking about the EVO here?)
“What the hell are you talking about? Who isn't crying? What faux, authoritative declarations have I made? Where have I been incorrect? Ahh...I'm taking up an unlimited amount of space? I didn't claim to be a martyr, nor am I dead, so I can't be a martyr.”
(Is that Shakespeare?)
“I'm a Droid lover”
#5 – The ULTIMATE truth
“Really? A poll on a phone people have used and a phone not even available yet? Kinda lame.”
Okay, now that Engadget reviewed both the EVO and the iPhone 4, it's time bring this post back, and settle things once and for all.
*Language* but HILARIOUS
