iPhone 4 vs. EVO 4G... fight!
If you put your ear up to the screen, you can hear these two beasts snarling at one another. Hit up the gallery for more shots, along with some iPhone 3G for good measure. Let's see how they stack up on the big stats, shall we?
Not enough for you? We'll have a big comparison of all the "majors" for you shortly.
Now, there's a lot left to learn about Apple's FaceTime video chat service. For instance, they called it "open," but they also only mentioned a zero-configuration iPhone 4 to iPhone 4 calling setup. Meanwhile Qik can make calls between EVO 4Gs, but also stream video live to the web (while the iPhone needs to record and then upload to get "social" using its official apps). No mention was made of the FaceTime call resolution, but given the fact that the front camera is merely VGA, it's probably streaming at the same 640 x 480 that Qik is constrained to in the free service. However, a premium version of Qik for $5 a month lets you go beyond that resolution, using the EVO's higher resolution cameras. Perhaps the largest distinction is the fact that the EVO can stream video calls over 3G or 4G, while the iPhone 4 is constrained to WiFi for the time being. Naturally, we expect other video calling apps (Skype, please?) to crop up on both platforms and give these initial offerings a run for their money.
| iPhone 4 |

| Secondary camera | VGA | 1.3 megapixel |

@CarlosE i think the brightness is just low on the EVO. I am an iPhone person, but that EVO 4G is pretty nice, that screen is however too big for me for a phone. have fun fitting that thing in a pocket.
@CarlosE
Vice versa, I'd say. The bigger screen> unnecessarily high resolution
@deepen03 I have an HD2 which is the same size and I have no problem fitting it into any pockets I have.
@deepen03
I agree. I'm not a hater but the EVO is just too big IMO.
@CarlosE thats because of different lighting and brightness levels. the EVO screen is absolutely gorgeous in person
@deepen03
fits fine in my pocket
@CarlosE
the evo in the picture definitely has the brightness turned down to around 20%
@deepeno3
the evo fits perfectly in my pockets (even my skinny jeans)
@CarlosE
The EVO's screen is absolutely brilliant. Would it be nice if it was higher resolution? Sure. Is it necessary or would it even be noticeable - I doubt it. I've yet to hear anyone say that they wish the EVO had a higher res.
As for overall size - the EVO isn't that much bigger than an iPhone. Small bezel makes a huge difference.
@spatula and all the smudges on the screen of the EVO don't help much.. they could have at least wiped it off before they took the pic
@CarlosE
Compare the actual dimensions of the two phones instead of eyeballing it:
iPhone: 4.5 x 2.31 x 0.37 (115.2 x 58.6 x 9.3 mm) - 4.8 ounces
Evo: 4.80 x 2.60 x 0.50 inches (122 x 66 x 13 mm) - 6.0 ounces
A phone that is .3" taller, .13" wider and 1.2 ounces heavier is "too big" for you? The actual display space on the Evo 4G is much larger, which makes it look like a bigger phone but it's not vastly different. My Evo fits in my pants pocket every bit as well as my 3Gs did.
Needs more categories
@pur
evo:hdmi 8, megapixel with double led, 1ghz cpu, microsd up to 32 maybe 64gb ...
iphone 4: a4 cpu, really slim
@pur
Like the voice/ data plans?
Only thing that the EVO has a distinct advantage over the iPhone 4.
@pur Evo: USA only, and works USA only. iPhone: available everywhere, and works everywhere. This is probably the most important requirement in a smart phone for me.
Alright, I'm just going to comment on this EVO/iPhone fight once. Just because you have an EVO doesn't mean you're the more intelligent for purchasing the "better spec'd" phone. People may feel that the iPhone is right for them, just as you felt the EVO is right for you.
@DoorsnotWindows
dont forget that most people are less informed when making purchases than the average engadgeter. given a side by side as such i doubt anybody will purchase the iphone cept the hardcore fans
@joshky Or they don't want to charge it twice a day and have a phone the size of a Reader's Digest.
@terabiter Yeah, because charging your phone is such a difficult task!
I'll take both please.
@RDM
agreed i need a phone for work and a phone for play...
but which should be which!?!? both can easily be hacked....
I'd have to say the EVO is still ahead. Size and screen are probably all the iPhone has over the EVO. And as far as size is concerned, it's not like the EVO is wasting the space. Screen resolution is nicer on the iPhone but that's not a deal breaker for the EVO.
@bfdhud cough... BATTERY... cough
@youngluck Apple batteries aren't much to write home about. SJ talked about how much more juice the battery in teh new phone had. And I'm sure at first it will. My last iPhone (3G) had great battery life until about 7 months in. I'm gonna assume that this new one will do something similar.
I would rather have a user replaceable battery any day of the week.
@youngluck this...the EVO battery is absolutely terrible
@dbreau1
That's a common misconception. I can easily get 16+ hours out of my Evo...
If you just shut off the wi-fi, GPS, and bluetooth when they're not in use you extend the battery life exponentially. YES it takes a extra two seconds to bring up the widget to do so, but it's worth it.
That said, I have to admit that's the one thing I missed about my iPhone. I got a good 13 hours (or more) out of a full charge without having to toggle settings.
@dbreau1 right...I'm typing this on my EVO, the battery life kills my old iPhone 3GS, I have had experience with both, shut your mouth
@dbreau1
Why do you say this do you own one? Because my evo lasts for least 9 hours with heavy texting and YouTube
I agreed EVO is so much better, but undeniably iPhone 4g will sell hell lot more than EVO. By combing the hip and pretentious effect, iPhone 4G can do a lot less and sell like hotcake
@1mc Of course it will sell a lot more. It's a world wide phone, not a Sprint specific CMDA/WiMax phone.
@1mc
I'm hoping Sprint does real well by the end of the year. Betting on it actually, and i think you are correct, sir, the Iphone 4 will sell well.
As for the iPhone 4G, gotta wait until next year for that one.
I thought the iPhone would put up a better fight than that. Other than the awesome resolution, I'm honestly not that impressed.
@KlassiK The iphone 4G is like driving a porsche in America; the EVO 4G is like driving a porsche in Africa - unleashed!
@KlassiK
And I also like WiFi n. Thats awesome right there.
@KlassiK What would it take to impress you?
@zik0612 NICE ONE!!! XD
This is the closest I've ever been to posting first.
Too bad the grid-of-icons look still looks like garbage next to Sense-skinned Android. No widgets = behind the times.
Apple products remind me of fruit baskets. After all, it's just fruit. We've had fruit since the beginning of humanity. But put it in a nice basket and present it nicely and it becomes meaningful.
Apple make nice baskets. But the Evo has some pretty cool fuit!
@tompccs I like this analogy.
@tompccs
Pretty cool fruits, but then fruit is fruit. You may not like them. Maybe you just prefer good ol' apple or a banana because it doesn't get your hands sticky... lol
It's like a fight to the death between the combatant normally known as Prince and Chuck Norris. Whoever loses, they still look awesome doing it.
EVO automatically loses 10pts for having that horrid Sprint logo on it....yikes.
@terabiter
and At&t is better??? :P
@skyblaze I've never seen an AT&T Logo on my iPhone
@terabiter
That is kinda true. I really hate how most of the mobile phones in the US are tied to their carriers. And now they want to put their logo on your phone to remind you that you are also their biatch.
iphone is a TOY, it is bad AS PHONE because of network and limits (wifi only calling, etc)
evo is a phone, good specs, and good future with more apps and features
@engaged
So you have tested the iPhone 4's calling abilities with the all new antenna system?
Please, go on. Inform me.
@Apple Fan the antenna thing was pretty cool despite leaving ugly ass seams on he side of the phone
@Apple Fan steve jobs tested and it didnt work
problems with calling and websites
3g+4g >> shitty 3g/2g
@Apple Fan
Ahem, go look what Gizmodo put up about a certain meltdown. Just sayin...
@engaged .. There were over 570 Wifi networks in one room. That is seriously insane and is enough to throw off any Wifi connection.
Same issue with 3G .. when you have that many users streaming data from the same tower it slows down.
