QIK admits Evo 4G launch problems after 20x increase on server load
While record sales are generally a desirable thing, that one-time spike in demand can leave service providers scrambling to cope on launch day. Evo 4G owners are well aware of this after noticing one of the handset's flagship features -- Qik video calling -- was unavailable in the Android Market on Friday. After correcting the issue, Qik then had to pull the app after users experienced intermittent service failures resulting from what Qik calls "an unprecedented 20x" workload increase on its servers. The Qik team is scrambling to provision more capacity and expects to have things under control "shortly."

The EVO must have really sold well.....
@prowler63 I guess that is how AT&T feels with the iPhone...
@Ashley32 really, could you hold up your apple related comments till 10am ET today? jeez
@mikmik111 Get a life and stop bitching, you people have been EVO'ing it up since it was announced. So just deal with the fact that there will be iPhone comments today and Evo comments as well. This place is getting as bad as AICN with people complaining.
@mikmik111
the Qik app came stock on my Evo. why would Evo users try to download it off the market?
@mikmik111
It's a valid comment.. maybe you should go have your morning coffee?!
@N900androidOS That one supports 2 way video chats.
@mikmik111 That'd still be 3 hours too early, he might be on here trolling for hours thanks to you ;-). 1 p.m. ET, 10 a.m. PT.
@Incorrigible dude STFU theres no need for apple fanboys to be trolling every time they see any posts from something that isnt apple
@N900androidOS
The one that comes with the Evo doesn't do video chat, you have to download the one that does from the market.
HTC needs to produce an EVOv2 on GSM for the rest of the world...
@Almo
or you could just sign up with Sprint...
@xTmDarren
Sprint doesn't exist in "the rest of the world".
For so long GSM countries will have to deal with the HTC HD2 I guess. Also a very good phone.
@SeeKo Great phone, except it's WinMo 6.5.
@SeeKo or you could just move to the U.S. /s
@juanvaldez
Thanks for the tip. But I'll stick with Europe for a while and see how that works out. ;-)
@xTmDarren
We don't all live in the US.
@SeeKo
I did get a HD2 on contract, it was awful, truly unbearable to use. I loved the hardware and feel, but the OS, stupid battery life and mediocre touch made it a truly abysmal experience. The announcement of no WP7 upgrade was the final nail, I returned it within the trial period and cancelled contract, quite disappointed. :(
@Almo
Troll. I bet you dont even or have never owned an HD2. There are hardly any complaints. Battery life is as good as it gets on a phone that has a 1Ghz processor from its time. This is the only phone to actually support winmo OS to its full potential.
@Almo super troll god what is this world coming to trolls left and right i feel like im harry potter its only my first year and im already fighting trolls.
Instead of a "pin drop" in slow motion..now its
The new Sprint , You can hear a server drop.
Is this just free video conferencing or? Solution make it not free :D
Also what is up with video conferencing as a selling point, that has been around for ages, the same goes for 4G, that we have had for what 5-10 years? Did HTC not launch the HTC Max 4G two years ago or?
@Techtrino yeah in Russia.. on GSM.. which apparently no one in the USA can use. Sprint is the only carrier here that has 4g and this IS the first US phone to have it..
@xTmDarren
wierd, because 4G is old tech, I thought that it had been available in the US for some time as well. I believe that 4G is as old as 3G, but just Nokia tech, I can remember that here in Denmark there was a lot of debate about adopting 3G or 4G 10 years ago.
But good that the US is catching up after all
Seriously? Ur joking about the whole 4G thing right? Let me help you out with that....... "/sarcasm"
@Techtrino
Living in Germany I'm somewhat curious what kind of 4G tech you have up their in Denmark for more than 5 years now. Can you clarify? I think you might have a very different definition of what it is.
@Techtrino sometimes late is good. i was late for an appointment and missed a car wreck on the highway. "whew"
@SeeKo
Wimax ;) or 4G, nothing fancy
We are a bit behind e.g. Sweden, Norway and Finland.
@WorldClear
Sometimes late can be bad, like when your girlfriend is late for her monthly friend. I don't need another $10 fee mouth to feed. :)
@Techtrino
Cool. I envy Scandinavia for their communications infrastructure.
But Worldclear is right as well. The US might be a bit behind their due to the size of the country and the huge investment it brings along to develop a new technology. But also due to their highly subsidized and therefore cheap smartphones and the variety of media and content providers it is projected that the US will lead the 4G market very soon after it kicks in.
I own an Evo and am wondering if anyone else is encountering an error when listening to music on the htc music player. I also took a picture of the error, I get it all the time and it says force close.
@operation231 I don't know of a fix but in the mean time I recommend you down load doubletwist player from the market for free to listen to you music until you find a solution. bmusic is very good to but it is not free. Also double twist syncs you media from you desktop like itunes does for iPhones
Put the servers in the cloud!
@SeeKo better yet put the servers on unicorns, they never fail!
Fring video Skype chat ftw.
You can count on Skype never going offline from server overload
@DefPoet P2P FO' LIFE!
Loving the childish fanboiis excuses for the miserable battery life of the Evo.
@magadget
Have you actually held one for over 24 hours?
@magadget
No one here even mentioned battery life or power consumption. Don't know where you think you're posting?!
@magadget
you're way off track.. Battery life has been good (to say the least). Not to mention it chargest FAST! No problems here!
@magadget
Maybe you should actually listen to people that OWN the device rather than reviews that start with "an iPhone user's review..." Reported battery life for the EVO is at LEAST 12-14 hours, similar to iPhone 3GS. I haven't seen anyone reporting horrible battery life in real world usage. Even Phonedog reviewed this just recently, and Noah dispelled the battery life rumors.
@magadget I've had the phone for 3 days now and it easily lasted me the 6 hrs with heavy browsing with Flash, about 12 YOUTUBE videos, camcorder, Facebook, an hour of gaming, 2 hours of podcasts, with GPS and WiFi on switched off Bluetooth. I use gmail, but not through exchange, like my iPhone, Push was a major drain on the battery on the iPhone.
I find the EVO's battery acceptable.
@sfox8 actually my Evo battery life sucks but that most likely because I literally haven't put it down since Friday except for about 4 hours of sleep this thing is like crack I swear
Funny how the story here makes it look like as if the Evo 4G was doing a bad thing.
"They've record sales but they're hurting the providers!!!"
Pretty sure it would have been "It's so good its breaking Qik" if it was about the iPhone.
it's funny this caught them off guard. exact same thing happened when the iphone apps were allowed to use 3g. everyone snapped it up to test and destroyed the servers.
Qik blows up during first week of EVO 4G launch? It was obviously under-dimensioned. Welcome to exponential growth!
For some reason my mind thinks that pic above looks like the guy is standing a a urinal and that the software has some kind of anti-bathroom perve technology.
Man, if only I know how to play stock.
To all EVO owners,
There is a thread currently going on over at XDA that shows you how to get QIK working, with a newer version that sis not come with our phones! The icon is actually BLUE and is more user friendly. Here is a link to it:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=694770
I tested it last night and it worked perfectly with very little lag! =]
@SPENone Thanks. trying it out now.
@SPENone Thanks gonna try it out :)
