Graduation cap modded with LED array, steals show (video)
Yomo Gaocho, an enterprising young man about to graduate from Northwestern University, has put together pretty much the coolest grad cap mod we've seen. Not that we're experts on the subject or anything, but the array of 256 LED lights adorning his cap surely makes for one of the geekiest ways to bid adieu to one's undergraduate studies. He's taking it one step further too, by programming animation patterns into the white LED arrangement and offering advertising space -- we're not kidding -- for any unorthodox companies that may wish to have him as a walking billboard. See Yomo's creation on video after the break, or hit the source for a guide on how to make your own light-fantastic grad cap.

Wow, just think of all the attention he's going to get. Must've been weaned off the nipple too soon.
@Leindurstit Or possibly too late. Well at least he didn't glue an ipad to it.
@engadgetcomexcludeengadget It would be a whole lot cooler if he did.
@jiubreyn I am kidding...of course. :)
@engadgetcomexcludeengadget That's the first thing i thought of too. Would be interesting to show live video of the ceremony shot by a friend with an iPhone in the audience.
What show did he steal? Lost? That show made no sense.
@Hexydes
The show was stolen, Apples are green, oranges are blue.
What?
What's with the grumpy old men comments?
Good job Yomo, and all the best!
@HansImGlueck
Because it would suck to be within 1000ft of him while at the graduation. You know, there ARE other people that don't want to be blinded by the douchie guy in front of you
@everyone does
It's cool but it might ruin everyone's graduation pictures... that bright white LED blot in the middle of all the photos. :(
nice work! so, how about the audio?do you need to bring an audio player to?or is it included with the cap?
10 geek points for the use of tada.wav
@ Leindurstit What a snarky comment! Are you jealous that this college kid was able to design something cool and all you are is a technology user not a designer nor creator? The kid did something cool. Give him credit and don't be envious of your betters.
When I went to my brother-in-law's EE graduation 10 years ago, there were a number of the grads that did similar mods to their mortarboards. The unique thing here is his plan to monetize his efforts, where the EE grads were all out to one-up each other.
Wouldn't it be easier just to tape an iPad to the cap?
@erh
Then you would look even more like an idiot.
@thisNthat
Isn't that the point?
We dis this in 2005 When I graduated with pic micro and LEDs. *yawn*
@Mattd00d
I was going to do this with infrared LED's (So that the image would only show up on cameras without infrared filters) for my graduation, but the damn things didn't get here from the supplier on time. Damn you UPS!!!
@Xenoterranos I've made a mental note of this for my college graduation
@Xenoterranos Cant wait to try this out next year! What an evil idea that works wonders!
I was thinking of doing something like that when I graduate from college
I had an idea to do something like that but I would be the ONLY kid with that in my High School and they probably wouldn't approve.
When I graduate from College I will pimp that thing up with OLED and Projectors and whatever may come cheap in 4-5 years ;]
Asians... Sheesh, their really into technology... arnt they?
unless the graduation is indoors the lights wont be bright enough to get a real good idea of what the hell is on his hat
you'll just have people goin huh?
@engadget
LOL Yomo Gaocho isn't the name.. it's a cantonese phrase that goes "Are you kidding?!?!?!?!?!"
No, I know this person - we are even Facebook friends. We graduated together as EECS majors with a BA from McCormick (hense the red/orange tassel) in Northwestern University in June 2009. He wore this cap topper last year and used it for scrolling messages with the cable going down his backside and a small keyboard on his arm or hip. I am guessing he did the one year Masters degree to show it again this year. Still, very good work!
No more douchey than the chicks that BeDazzle their caps.
One question: did he toss it at the end of commencement?
