Oh don't worry, the UK has a much more advanced telecommunications network in just about every other regard. Besides, Sprint's 4G network is pretty spotty in the few places where it even exists.

Yea, if you want to call WiMax in it's current state 4g. It's marketing bullshit in the US. Carriers in rest of the world will claim 4g when they can confidently and accurately claim they comply with the 4G standards set by the 3GPP.

But Sprint's 3G network makes up for it, since it is literally everywhere. I've not been to a place where I could not get Sprint EVDO-Rev.A on the 1.9Ghz spectrum. And I travel a lot.
@GeneralThade That's true. Advertising BS for market advantage is a uniquely American phenomenon. The rest of the world/humanity is much more principled and would not go for such dirty tricks.

It's true. I went into a Sprint store today, and they said they've already had 3 waves of pre-orders (I got put on the third wave). They had a stock of 50 devices come in, and they've already moved through all 50 of them in the past 2 days. Thankfully I went in early enough that the rep was able to put my name on the waiting list within 5 spots of the top, so I'm at least guaranteed an Evo by the end of the week.
This is madness! 3 Radio Shacks I called yesterday didn't have any Evo's, and neither did the Sprint corporate store that I also called. It's one hot device!
@John H, At&t's 3G network is pretty spotty in the few places where it even exists. At the very least, Sprint HAS a 4G network. ;)
@tklr08 Doesn't Sprint let it's users roam onto Verizon's 3G network? Hence the great 3G coverage.
@daniel142005 Yup, they do. There's good synergy and reliability when roaming the 2 networks over 3G.
Guess it was a good call by HTC after all not to deliver a GSM EVO right away. That one would have been sold out on it's first day. Hope they dial up the production and bring it anyway. :-)

@daniel142005 it does, but I have to get a fair bit out into the sticks before I start seeing any roaming going on. About the only areas I've ever been in without EVDO coverage on Sprint have been middle-of-nowhere parts of Oregon and Idaho, and most of those at least get 1X.

OMG ...EVO is so awesome. I loved everything about it except the $10 extra for the data plan. In NYC we don't have 4G

@Dirojey the frightening part is, 4G Evo users still aren't seeing the phone run the best it can. Wait until you guys see that phone run with Froyo. Pure Sex. Sprint, HTC, Google....make it happen.

I dont think so. Voice roams, but data is 1x, not 3G.

Anyone else notice the HTC wins lately? As of this post they have the two hottest Android phones in the U.S. (Evo, and Droid Incredible) that are both sold out across the country. Maybe I should look into purchasing some stock :D
@kmannn I'm not sure how serious you were about that, but I don't think HTC is actually listed on the US stock exchange. Peter Chou (HTC CEO) was asked about this last week at D8 and he said they'll do it eventually (but also said that he's too busy atm or something along those lines...)

Yeah times have changed. The new iPhone was announced and it was essentially a ho-hum affair with yet another Android handset moving hundreds of thousands of units.
Android 2.2 on the droid is awesome. Can't wait for Gingerbread this winter.
@Archon yup...i wanted the evo but i didnt have enough money...so ill wait for a year to see any devices that can be EVEN better then the iphone and evo....

@daniel142005 It's more like verizon let's it's users roam on sprint's network ... at least in the far corners of san Diego county. I'm a contractor and had a lot of verizon users ask I they could borrow my phone when they saw I had a signal. But who cares. I'm posting this w/ my iPod touch using my evo hot spot! Kool!
@techlord ah in tehran we have Wimax( wimax.irancell.ir ),but we should buy this beauty unlocked! and 15$ per month for a 3gb limit,Ah life is hard

@Archon most likely a low volume product. Not likely to have moved more than 100k units till now. If the numbers were strong we'd get real numbers. Even HD2 sold out on T Mobile. Meant little... same for HTC Incredible. Low volume production is the problem here.

Sprint's 4G is not real 4G. It's not faster than AT&T's 3G, HSDPA. But most of Americans are not so smart and then they will buy the cheap phone. So bad.

Unfortunately the roaming agreement only covers 1x, not 3g.
@GeneralThade the 3GPP have nothing to do with wimax, the WiSOA is the organization that deals and regulates wimax. 3GPP deals with GSM · CSD HSCSD · GPRS · EDGE/EGPRS UMTS (UTRAN) · WCDMA-FDD · WCDMA-TDD · UTRA-TDD LCR (TD-SCDMA)
@Deathshead I have Sprint and my plan (which includes unlimited roaming) includes FREE roaming on Verizon's 3G network as long as it does not surpass 70% of your total data usage for the month. I used it all the time in Aspen CO.
@Archon I know this happened to two of my friends. They were massively impressed by the evo, but were long time iphone users. After this announcement, they're both switching to the evo.
This thing looks like terrible, screw you and your walled garden apple, I want to do whatever I want with what I paid for.
@daniel142005 It roams at non-3G (1X) speeds on Verizon. Still, kinda useful in a pinch.
Walmart 5030 (in Toledo, Ohio)had some in stock today.
@Mr Bean 4G is a packet protocol and the current 3G hardware in Europe at the mast is capable of 4G speeds using a 3G protocol. This will be a free speed upgrade for no investment here for the providers. Given the larger land area 3G hardware is not suited to the distances that you really need in the US. Lets no mix up software and hardware Japan is not on the Intel wagon either guess what they have there own 4G hardware in mind as do China with is not even 4G based. Love a protocol me.

@scorpeo ANDDDD Sprint can change said network from WiMax to LTE when they feel like it. I read that a LTE test got up to 120mbps... I call that a huuuge advantage. The providers that WANT LTE don't even have a network in place right now... Sprint FTW!
