iOS 4 gold works with any compatible iPhone / iPod touch via iTunes 9.2, jailbreak also updated
Want to get your hands on an iOS 4-equipped device now without being a registered Apple developer? As a number of readers have pointed out, it seems yesterday's gold build release works on any applicable iPhone / iPod touch whether or not its UDID has been sent to the dev center. Now that the previous restraint has been lifted, the only requirement now is a copy of iTunes 9.2 -- currently for Macs only and still blocked by the developer gate, but once you manage to obtain the appropriate files, the only thing in your path is time itself. Sure enough, we just got through installing the build on an unregistered iPhone without a hitch. Details available via Gumball Tech, and please, don't forget to back up your data ahead of time.In less rule-abiding news, the not-quite-surgical hand of the jailbreak community has taken a gander at the gold. A developer known as msft.guy, whose previous credentials includes recently-released binary "which enabled blacksn0w unlock port for iPhone 3GS on iOS 4 Beta 4" according to Redmond Pie, has updated PwnageTool for yesterday's update. As always, proceed with that one at your own risk, and if you're curious but hesitant, the ever-reliable iPhone Dev Team promise a full jailbreak / unlock suite later this month. Either way, video proof is available after the break.
Update: Just to clarify, iOS 4 now works with any iPhone / iPod touch that's already been proven compatible -- the trick here is that you now don't need to register with Apple before trying.
[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

99% of jailbreak apps won't work yet, so what's the point (unless you're a developer)
@10nisman94
Bragging rights obviously?
Honestly, if I had a Mac, I'd be on this faster than a fat kid in a chocolate shop.
@10nisman94
The point is for the devs of said apps can now test their apps on ios4
@10nisman94
Now,
Put a 3-5 mega pixel camera on the iPod Touch and my purchase of the Evo 4g has officially been justified drastically.
@10nisman94 Actually the dev team released a ios4 jailbreak for the betas so developers could test and update their apps to be ready for the official launch date
@A Brown Kid Do they still come in DMGs? For 3.0 GM I used to just open it with 7zip and take the ipsw
@10nisman94
Dammit where the hell is iTunes 9.2 Beta for Windows!! >:(
@BeeDavis What do you mean?
@marsdta I know there was a beta jailbreak for devs, but this is still pretty irrelevant for the average user. (unless they want to unlock and be on 4.0 early)
@10nisman94 Now when the article says ANY iPod touch & iPhone, of course they don't mean 1st gens.
@Fragmented
Have fun in banhammerland.
Just made my freaking day Engadget. Just loaded onto the 3GS. Works beautifully.
@Teslanaut
Yes well have fun installing Android 4.0 on your G1.
Screw off with the legacy devices shit. Seriously.
@10nisman94 Actually, teenagers with too much time on their hands who want to "hack" things, and those geeks who want to do it for their own personal reasons, there's really not a lot of reason to jailbreak these days. Aside from LockInfo, and backgrounder, and multi-tasking is coming in iOS 4.0 anyways.
Furthermore, playing with beta software is the same "nerd lust" as jailbreaking anyways, something to do when bored.
@Daphoid you have no fucking clue what you're talking about. Ever heard of sbsettings for example?
@Daphoid you failed to mention. 3g unrestrictor gvoice winterboard psx4all n64all real multitasking with backgrounder mywi for free tether and more dont post fud
@Daphoid your such a troll. get a life.
Not only that, installous does it work IOS4 can I save attachements, will I be able to get around the spacelimit 750MB reserved for apps,docs,PDFs.
@Technologeee not existing
@Teslanaut
So let me get this straight, none of OS 4 works on first gen?
@10nisman94
99%? I just installed more than 30 apps on my 2nd gen ipod touch (hacked to allow multitasking and wallpapers) and every one works. Given none of them support the multitasking feature (yet)
omg omg, I want it now
msft,guy redmond pie...
looks like a Microsoft employee giving the finger to Apple
@DefPoet
If so, then why does this work on Mac only?
@A Brown Kid, they said that iTunes only. Not something they want to fix.
@A Brown Kid
I'd guess became he did jot write the pwnage tool. He just modded it
even the original iphone? Because that would be sweet!
Could somebody please tell me if I can install the gold build release on my first generation, 2008 iPhone? I don't care how, but without jailbreaking would be the best. Thank you so much!
@DokiDokiPanic First iPhone will not run iOS 4.
Too bad Apple's deemed my 2008 as incapable of running Multitasking. Or Wallpapers (what?).
@Colours: Should clarify. It's an iPod touch from 2008.
[EDIT BUTTON PLS]
@Colours Yeah, I have an iPhone from early 2008 and could anybody tell us how to get the gold build? I'm not a developer, but have OS X.
@DokiDokiPanic If it's the 3G, you have to download the right 4.0 firmware from the Internet, and install the 9.2 beta(again, downloaded from the internet) then apple-click restore, select the 4.0 firmware, hit go and your done.
@Colours jailbreak and have true multi tasking.
@DefPoet
how is the multitasking apple has done not "true multitasking"?
@maribo
Let me restate that apples multitasking is only true multi tasking for gps, music, voip apps. Other kinds of apps can't have services run in the background IM apps being the big one. Even the the way apple multi tasks isn't the real definition of multitasking, Androids way of doing falls into that same boat. Webos truly multi tasks. Symbian and WM fall in-between. Webos and iPhone Android multitasking
In other news, www.engadget.com/exclude/apple is looking pretty empty.
@A Brown Kid
I like you, what's your gamertag? :D
what about.... 1st gen iPod Touch...
@Rohan That's what I was thinking. I have my iPod Touch jailbroken. I only did that because I thought it wouldn't get the features of iOS4, and I wanted multitasking. If this was on the 1st gen iPod Touch, I might not need it.
Why no Windows support... ugh....
@APV
I know! GRR.
I was going to hackintosh my laptop for this, but it aint workin correctly :(
@Technologeee
go to insanelymac.com. They have so much info...
Shoot me an email: shadowbird423@gmail.com
@APV
Probably because the build is seeded officially to devs, and you can only dev for iOS on OS X. So an iTunes 9.2 beta (which is only needed to sync up the 4.0 GM) for Windows isn't necessary at the moment (officially)
Will this kill my 2nd gen ipod touch if I use itunes 9.1.1.11 on windows? PLEASE REPLY
@Mr iPhone Since you don't have the mental capacity to read it will probably kill you.
@petebob796 oh..oops..sorry...i might try it though
Will this kill my 2nd gen ipod touch if I use itunes 9.1.1.11 on windows? PLEASE REPLY
weird... his carrier says (in the About page) its Rogers 7.0 (woo Canada)... although, mine is still at 5.0 (firmware 3.1.2)... given that this carrier "file" is updated within iTunes update AND its a iPhone 3GS (i would have suspect that 7.0 version is for the iPhone 4), i'm wondering where went the 6.0 version haha... im doubtful a little bit
@scotchtape20 Fuck Rogers but I guess i can't complain with the 30$ 6GB YaY ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
