iOS 4 gold works with any compatible iPhone / iPod touch via iTunes 9.2, jailbreak also updated
Want to get your hands on an iOS 4-equipped device now without being a registered Apple developer? As a number of readers have pointed out, it seems yesterday's gold build release works on any applicable iPhone / iPod touch whether or not its UDID has been sent to the dev center. Now that the previous restraint has been lifted, the only requirement now is a copy of iTunes 9.2 -- currently for Macs only and still blocked by the developer gate, but once you manage to obtain the appropriate files, the only thing in your path is time itself. Sure enough, we just got through installing the build on an unregistered iPhone without a hitch. Details available via Gumball Tech, and please, don't forget to back up your data ahead of time.In less rule-abiding news, the not-quite-surgical hand of the jailbreak community has taken a gander at the gold. A developer known as msft.guy, whose previous credentials includes recently-released binary "which enabled blacksn0w unlock port for iPhone 3GS on iOS 4 Beta 4" according to Redmond Pie, has updated PwnageTool for yesterday's update. As always, proceed with that one at your own risk, and if you're curious but hesitant, the ever-reliable iPhone Dev Team promise a full jailbreak / unlock suite later this month. Either way, video proof is available after the break.
Update: Just to clarify, iOS 4 now works with any iPhone / iPod touch that's already been proven compatible -- the trick here is that you now don't need to register with Apple before trying.
[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]

got it going on my ipod touch 2G. note syncing works ^-^ but i can't get the wallpaper to change. like for the springboard... (behind the icons)
HALP
@jessejj
It's in the wallpapers section of settings.
YOu have 2 choices there. Change the screen lock image and the one on the back of the icons.
@dk79
For the 2G iPod touch, you can't change it behind the springboard. It's annoying, but I've confirmed it using my own iPod. I'd assume it's the same on the iPhone 3G.
@Concorde105 You can now if you download Redsn0w 9.5 beta and in the settings click "allow wallpaper and multitasking" and, you don't have to install cydia if you don't want to
@Mr iPhone Thanks! it worked on the third attempt (first two tries it hanged on "waiting for reboot") everything works great.
Obviously this made my ipod slower but i'd rather have functionality over performance. Maybe i'll disable the background wallpaper since it's not necessary.
This is great, I did not know this was too the case for 3.0 GM
I'm registered as a non-paying developer but can't find either the 4.0 GM or iTunes 9.2 beta to download. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
@odball If you're trying to find the 9.2 beta and the 4.0GM on Apple's site as a non paying developer, you won't. You're best bet is to Google it, and make sure you get the right firmware version of iOS4 whenever you find it.
@adapaw I think that anyone who would take the time to update their phone beforehand would know where to find the required software.
@ptysell I would have thought that anyone who would have taken the time to reply might have done so with something a little more constructive. It seems we were both wrong.
@odball
You didn't read the article did you? The links were there.
@Slayer84 I did read the article but wasn't aware there were any links...?
@odball The links are right next to "Source:" The one to get the OS is the "gumball" one. :)
I have a MacBook Pro as well as a Sony Vaio work laptop, and guess which one my iPhone is synched with? Boo!
I can't get my 3G on it, just says that I am not registered to use it or whatever, thought this was now "open" to everyone....
@mattabc - using iTunes 9.2 Beta? That's you problem
Please someone tell me how to do this one an iPhone 3G...
@K3V1Nbot Go to this website, it walks you through everything and has links to all iPhone and iPod versions. http://www.iphonexpert.com/how-to-download-ios4-iphone-ipod-touch-gm-firmware-itunes-9-2-beta/
@joeg Hey thanks for the link! its really helpful! I also posted another question there, I was wondering if you know the answer to my question too, ummm since this is an iTunes beta 9.2, is it good to download now? as in if they release the public release of this version (not beta), will I still be able to download it without ruining my iTunes library? or is there a disadvantage to this?
thanks a bunch,
K3V1Nbot
@K3V1Nbot I just did it with the public version and everything was fine
Anyone try it with a bluetooth keyboard yet?
Not sure I'm going to bother without multi-taking apps updated yet.
It works on 3G (iPhone1,2) but missing some important features which I know the hardware can't handle. HOWEVER, it is a bit more snappier and I'm happy with the unified inbox. It'll have to tie me over until 6/24 when I get the new iPhone :)
iOS4 question for you early adopters...
...finally wallpaper at long last BUT can I finally also have my own message alert tone???
Thanks.
@OrsonX
Not from what I can tell.
@John52
Thanks for the reply. What a shame!
Hello, I have GM iOS 4 installed (not the jailbroken version so I don't have cydia) and I was wondering if that drained my battery life a little more due to the fact of multitasking and folders. Also, is this the final iOS 4 that apple is going to release or on June 21 should I restore my iphone and download the official copy? Could someone please respond! Thanks!!!
Has any tried the multiple exchange accounts feature yet? If that's working in this build, I'm going to install it tonight.
iOS4 is great, thanks for the info. Updated my 3GS with no issues. Everything is working great.
sucesfully installed on my 3G but when restored to back up, it was unreadable by itunes. Hmmm, kinda pointless. Anyone else having this issue?
@modthatmac I think thats because the backup was on 3.x.x
I tried on my 3rd gen iPod Touch.
Everything went well till it got probably near the 95% complete mark in iTunes, then it just got stuck.. waited about an hour and it never did anything more.
Works great, haven't messed with os 4.0 tethering yet though. Can anyone tell me if it's working or if there are any issues? Ps returning my Evo today for the iPhone 4. Had my 3GS running music all day for my daughters party and still had enough battery life to get me through the following day while my evo sat in my bedroom untouched and drained it's battery all by itself.
only downside is you apparently cant jailbreak a 3GS and managing folders in iTunes seems to crash... but aside from that tis Golden
Works fine on my 2G iPod touch. :D
Downloaded it on my 3Gs and it works awesome. No iBooks though, anyone know how to get that?
do i need to use iTunes 9.2? Afraid if I won't get the original public release later for this version....
Strange that "multitasking" on my iPhone 3GS doesn't seem to work the way Apple claims it does. In the iPhone video for multitasking, they demo leaving a game (guitar hero or rock band?) to messaging and then back to the game. In the video, the game appears to pick up right where it left off, which is also what Apple claims (that your app picks back up exactly where you left it). On my phone, none of the games pick back up. Rather, they all seem to exit. When I double-click the home button and select the game I had been playing, it loads up from zero as if I hadn't been playing. Updated games with special code? I wouldn't think so, as I thought this was an API-driven feature.
@koneill I had the same problem, but i remembered that all the current apps aren't built for multitasking yet. They will send an update soon I hope
Has anyone had success doing this on the windows version 9.1? I know it says it needs to be 9.2 but I'm curious if it's been pulled off or not.
@mavericmechanik I tried it just gave me an error...good thing 9.2 is out for PC!
Also can an updated iPhone be synced with windows after updated on a mac? My MacBook is broken so I've had to revert to my roomates windows computer. I may be able to use a friends mac to update but I need to be able to sync my stuff back on the iPhone.
