Skype eager to work with Apple FaceTime, pretty much anyone else
We're still playing the wait-and-see game when it comes to Skype on webOS and Windows Phone 7, but it looks as if to-be iPhone 4 owners won't have to wait long before Skype-based video chatting becomes a reality... if Skype has its way, that is. According to someone on the inside quoted over at Pocket-Lint, Skype "would welcome the opportunity to work with Apple," specifically in reference to integrating FaceTime capabilities into the firm's own app. The mystery man also affirmed that Skype would "welcome the opportunity to work with Apple to bring mobile video calling not only to our many millions of Skype users on iPhone around the world, but also to the countless more making video calls on desktops, TVs and other connected devices." 'Course, there's no specific time frame given, and only Jobs knows if the two companies have said a word to one another about making this happen. One thing's for sure, though -- enabling FaceTime usage within Skype would suddenly made the iPhone 4's video calling abilities a whole lot more appealing. And by "appealing," we mean "useful."
Update: Skype hit us with some clarification -- the company wants to make sure you know that it's not interested in using FaceTime across its own platform, but it'd be happy to play nice with Apple in order to add video calling within the Skype iPhone app. Full statement is past the break.

"We are not considering FaceTime as a technological platform for video calling in our own products.
However, given Apple's statement about FaceTime being an open platform, we are looking forward to see how it unfolds. We look forward to working with Apple to make sure the millions of users of Skype on the iPhone get the best possible experience when it comes to video calls on mobile devices and beyond."

Skype and iChat (AIM) will make this work perfectly. I think that's the point. Apple are hoping to see more apps for the front facing camera, because they obviously realize that not every person will buy the iPhone 4.
Only thing that I'm not crazy about is FaceTime not working over 3G. Hopefully Skype will though.
'Useful' huh? I know 20+ people with iPhones. I know 0 people who use skype. It might be more 'useful' for you nerds, but for the rest of us it works just fine and when it eventually is integrated with iChat will be even better.
So skype video call or Fring video calling is not going to be available when the Iphone4 release on the 24th ????
anyone please confirm this!....
THANKS!!!
Video calling has been out on android for a while now over wifi and 3g........apple fan boys need to catch up....
@Yelis63103 a while? Last time I checked the EVO was the first Android phone with a front facing camera. (Hacking doesn't count).
It's true that many other places such as Europe had these phones for a while, but not Android or iPhone. Sorry.
@John Lennon
Well, you dont need front facing camera to do a video call. Fring Free video calling has been out for sometime and it works.
still wondering why the hell there's no Skype for ps3...
@Xerxes028 cuz the PS3 browser sucks! Its online capabilities suck. It's a close proprietary piece of crap. The only good thing about it is the video games on it and the graphics. Sony should just stick to that.
@slickpaki
You're an idiot. It's called an app, just like the one Skype already has for PSP. Obviously Skype is able to work with sony's proprietary systems. Online capabilities of PS3 are more than sufficient to make high quality skype calls.
Do this make it a reasonably priced paid app and Apple still gets a cut from using it on other OS's and will always have an advance feature set to set the iPhone apart. That would be great and make video calling more useful for all..... But I doubt that Apple does this....nhope I'm wrong but doubt it
We can clearly see that these webcams on the newer phones are in their infancy. It will be interesting to see if this will catch on anytime soon
Skype and Gtalk video calling works on the Nokia N900 after the latest firmware update. The N900 natively supports this(no need for fring anymore) and is well integrated into the phonebook and works over 3g too!
Well, hey Skype. Get off the exclusivity with Verizon and give us Evo owners access.
@Duscrom I already have it on my EVO, it's called FRING and NIMBUZZ. I have been making international calls over 3g and wifi for nothing. You don't need SKYPE on android to use it, there are other 3rd party programs available for free!
Yeah, right--those folks are, what, 80 yrs old? They won't be Skypin', believe me.
If I have to be connected by WiFi, why not just skype through your laptop camera instead of holding a small phone in front of your face?
This is a great photo for Facetime equipped JitterBug phones.
wow stop using that excuse they droped the data plans to make it cheaper for the people that think its to expensive to own an iphone. they know by now all the people that are going to usw the iphone to the max already has one so they are grandfathered in for life for the ulimited data or less you change your voice package. oh and by the way if you guys think att is bad with the new data just wait until verizon and sprint release theirs. add another 20 bucks to sprint. verizon is going to charge 15 bucks for 150 mb and thats the only package and everyone has to switch they are not letting anyone stay on unlimited. if you want more data its 10 for another 100 mb now thats sad.
iphone4>evo
with the HTC Evo 4G you can use Qik for free (only you have to go to the Market and download the new version.), you can use Fring with the Fring account or Fring using the Skype account. I didn't test the Nimbuzz with video calling but I'll try it. And with the Evo 4G you can use it with wi-fi or Sprint network (3g or 4g) UNLIMITED.
You have to try it. If you like it you have 30 days to cancel the contract and won't pay for the plan used in that 30 days. In other words you'll it FREE. But I know that you'll like it. Sprint and Evo 4G Rules. Try it frist and talk later.

Better plans than these? NOBODY... ONLY with Sprint
I forgot. Also you'll get Free roaming with all the plans. And maybe you can get a discount on the plans (5 to 25% off) no matter if it is a SERo plan. At less in Puerto Rico works of that way.
And with that plan you have the beneficts to change your phone every years with the total of the discount for the first line. it is a win win. Come to Sprint and forget the iPhone. It looks cool but Evo is better.
I hope skype works wit facetime
