Sprint misstated EVO 4G sales, by a lot
Remember when Sprint said this:
Nuh uh, it's wrong. Sprint just issued a correction in the wee hours stating that first day EVO 4G sales were, in reality, "in line with" the number of Instincts and Pres sold over their first three days on the market combined. Still pretty good if that translates to the 150,000 units sold as some analysts are touting; even better if Sprint can restock shelves."The total number of HTC EVO 4G devices sold on launch day was three times the number of Samsung Instinct and Palm Pre devices sold over their first three days on the market combined."

Another blow into Androif fanboiis faces. :(
@magadget More iPads sold over the first weekend than EVOs... Wouldn't that be awesome!? LOL
@magadget Yes, the more sales the better as it'll bring in content, but any Android fanboy can't ask for more than a device selling out...
I find this all very strange since Sprint has never released the sales numbers on both the Instinct and Palm Pre. So now they tell us that the EVO numbers, which they won't release, aren't as high as other numbers they didn't release. Wow, they must be selling like hotcakes!
@magadget Nah its not like that. May be an eye opener. Truth is android is for geeks. With all the multitasking openess of OS etc. Average user doesnt even know whats the difference between android and droid and they dont even care because most of them have iphones anyways. But goodluck to Sprint it wasnt a bad launch.
@magadget Why would anyone care how many units were sold? They are out enjoying their EVOs not blasting other OSs cause your doesn't come close enough to what Android is. Get a life or a job and stop complaining. You just had a huge day of apple news. I am a Nexus One owner and I can really care less how many devices were sold in the first day, week, or few months.
@magadget
Android has tons of devices. Add all the units sold from 1st day of launch for all the devices and it will blow any apple product out of the water. That's why the iphone/ipad do so well at launch, THERE IS ONLY 1 Model. If the Evo was the only android phone, I bet they would have sold 1 million devices too. That's why even as the iphone captures launch day sales records, android is taking over their market share.
@PolarBearTC I believe I was one of the first to call sales at the 100k range!
@angermeans to be fair i think you need to acknowledge that a lot of android fans are just waiting to pounce and say AHA! TAKE THAT, APPLE FANBOYS WHO DON'T KNOW ANYTHING!
@dswatson83 that is quite a bad and rather unfair analogy, i'm afraid, considering how varied the choices are and the difference in timeline. imho, that is akin to you saying "take all the windows-based computers sold over X period of time and compare it with macs over the same X period of time!"
@juanvaldez I have also repeatedly called put to the fact that HTC has very limited production for any model. Hence, selling out for HTC doesn't mean much. For intance, T Mobile got just 10k HD2 and that it sold out was considered a big deal for some at the time.
I would guess the actual number is 100K
@jaffreywali I think I skipped the HD2 stories as I just didn't find the phone appealing, but I did point out separately here how everyone might fail to realize how small a company HTC is relative to the big boys and their supply-chain lines just aren't as well developed as most of the smartphone OEMs that get reported on Engadget.
I think comparing the HD2 though isn't very telling as I think the phone beat expectations (what I remember about the one story I read, probably the first and last on the subject was "Why?"). So, the 10K might have been an intentional shortage so they weren't stuck with an oversupply that they couldn't sell. Better to error on the side of caution on a platform that has had it's date-of-death written on the wall, especially when your resources are a bit scarce.
@angermeans Yeah. It's called resigning to your fate. I bet if it sold better your story would have changed.
@juanvaldez I know Tmobile ran out of the HD2 but have no idea how many they sold. I don't know any corporate users who have tmobile and the HD2 is a corporate phone for the most part. If Sprint had carried the HD2 I would have bought one in a second.
@dswatson83 I still don't think you're right, not with the iPhone 3G selling 1 million launch weekend... Between the 3G and 3GS period, there were some good devices, but I think none of them sold extrodinarily well. You'd have to add them up to make it close. If you want to add up all of the iPhone launch dates and all of the android phone launch dates, android wouldn't cone close. Remember, 28% vs 9% market share... That ratio probably scales well to release day numbers, too.
The issue is not how many phones Sprint said it sold, but the public perception of how many phones sold.
In this case, I, and most other people, got the impression that the Evo was a game-changing phone for the OS platform and for Sprint as a company...that's a huge difference than "actually it did about as well as our other phones have"...
Not an Anrdoid hater at all, but this is kind of a blow to the excitement.
.
@Bakerdk
Theyre still saying that it sold as much as the other two phones put together....
@Peter Church hahaha. I read it sold out. Guess not. hahaha
@hondamx525
No, they're saying it sold in comparable numbers to the other major launches by Sprint.
In other words...decent numbers, but nothing spectacular.
@ebon
Exactly. My point stands.
@Peter Church If the EVO numbers were worth bragging about, trust me Sprint would be doing so.
@jaffreywali
You are right. The selling out is take a bit out of context. There is a huge difference in an iPad or iPhone selling out and the Evo selling out.
Though selling out is always good, selling out of 1,000,000 units and 100,000 units is a big difference in context.
@angermeans Shareholders care.
@Bakerdk
Not a blow to the excitement of anyone that bought an EVO. I switched from iphone last week and Steves little dog and pony show on Monday did nothing to make me regret my decision. It's nice having a choice in phones, and then it's also nice to have choices while using that phone. As Apple fans like to say, iPhones just work. Yep...but only in the limited ways Apple intended.
@gigity
You sound like you're trying to convince yourself, not us.
@dswatson83 Ford sells more cars than BMW. It must clearly be because Ford is just the better car, and not that Ford produces more cars at a cheaper price.
@gigity My Jailbroken iPhone 3G seriously disagrees with your statement.
@magadget
"Sprint said on Tuesday the total number of HTC EVO 4G devices sold on the launch day was in line with the number of Samsung Instinct and Palm Pre devices sold over their first three days on the market combined."
SO it sold more in one day that its two best selling phones ever sold in a full 1st weekend? EPIC FAIL... Troll.
@Bakerdk
Well it seems like Apple really want to quash this phone because it does look to be a game-changer, and it will inevitably become one if it is looked upon as that in the papers.
Seems like maybe Apple have had a bit of influence on this coverage, and I wouldn't be surprised to see a few more similar articles to this come up pretty soon.
What happened to a 'free' press eh?
@XChrisX
I was obviously being sarcastic. I guess you didn't catch the tone. Of course, maybe that's why I got high ranked.
@dswatson83 Yup, and that is call fragmentation my friend... is like a pc...different choices of hardware, with small modifications, and variations of the software. Sad story for the android...just sad.
"Sprint misstated EVO 4G sales, by a lot."
How can engadget have a title like that, when Sprint never released numbers? Sprint said sales were "in line", the title is misleading,
@magadget
Android fanboiis seem to get panic.
@keyrol its actually a very fair analogy. its apples fault that they are the sole makers of apple OS products. when talking about the popularity of an OS, you cant say that only one device counts. so all android phone sales should rightfully be compared to iphone sales since there is only one maker of phones w/ the iphone os. so comparing windows pcs to mac pcs is justified bc apple could easily allow others to make mac os computers. but if you're so concerned with how many of whatever device apple/htc/whoever sells then you sound more like a bandwagon bitch than someone who likes tech for the tech that it is. i wont lie, i greatly dislike apple. not bc of poor products but bc of blatant lies in advertising and the ridiculous overpricing that goes on with every product. o and i cant stand steve jobs or the one outfit he owns.
@keyrol
Yes, that's exactly the same. Android will eventually outsell iPhone (if it hasn't already) just as Windows outsells Macs. What's your point?
@toddjy
This must be the worst comment system ever created (except maybe WordPress). My comment should have appeared only a few comments down from the one i responded to, not all the way at the bottom. My comment doesn't make sense because there's no context.
@ebon
Do you see that word "combined" at the end of the sentence. It sold as many as the other two phones *combined*, but not way more.
@enaybee
A lot of people must have hacked iPhones then, because AT&T (the only carrier for iPhones in the US) is only the second largest (in the US). Of course, AT&T is way ahead of Sprint.
@XChrisX I think that goes for any company.
@toddjy
I'd rather have a carrier misstate sales numbers than expose customer data. http://gawker.com/5559346/
@funkyboss
Android fanboii
@PolarBearTC
Sorry but Apple lied about that OS share thing, check it;

Apple lies Sprint lies Apple lies Sprint lies.
But I don't really care with my Evo by my side.
Haahhaahahahahahhaahh ahahahhhahahahhaahhahahahhhahaha hhaahhahahahhhahahahhaahhah ahahhhahahahhaahhahahahhh ahahahhaahhahahahhhaha hahhaahhahahahhhahahahhaah hahahahhhahahahhaahhahahahh...............

Sorry, I was just laughing at a joke I heard. What's this about the EVO 4G? It didn't sell too well. Hmmm that's such a shame, it seems like a great phone.
I'm sure it will eventually beat the 2 million iPhone 4's sold in the first weekend [/prediction]
PS the joke was the EVO 4G
PPS haters need to learn when to just give in instead of the constant FUD when a device comes out and the excuses when it dies on its arse. Just stop making yourselves look so pathetic.
Oh oh, but before you downrank, please consider that I'm a perfectly rational person who owns no Apple products. I'm one of you haters, one of the gang y'know.
@XChrisX
doesn't change the fact that you can't get one right now. So, it did as well as it could have, right? Either Sprint never wanted to brag in an effort to not get stuck with a bunch of phones on the shelves, or HTC wasn't able to produce the quantities Sprint wanted for the launch. Each is possible. Either way, you can brag about selling out. You CAN'T brag about under-forecasting.
@TinWard
I downranked you, and I don't care who you hate. I just know I hate you, after seeing that eyesore of a post.
iPhone guy here chiming in....
Still a pretty good start. Way to go, Sprint and HTC.
What? Did you think I was going to say something like "HA!, suck it, Fandroids!!"? Guess I'm just in a nice mood this morning.
@redhineymonkey Assuming they were correct when saying they sold out, then the only way they could've done better would've been to produce more units. Apple obviously has a large competitive advantage when it comes to being able to have many more devices available for sale at launch. Engadget readers sometimes forget how small HTC is, relative to the big boys like Nokia and Samsung, because of how often we hear about them and their next great phone.
WebOS guy chiming in . . .
At least HTC had sense enough not to sign away its future with a dumbass six-month exclusivity agreement so ALL its phones are on ONE carrier.
(Still bitter about that. Thanks a lot, Palm.)
@Smart People Play Tuba
Don't see the Evo on other carriers. Do you really think that's how Palm screwed up? You've no clue even after a year now...
@Smart People Play Tuba
"At least HTC had sense" Nice pun, but I don't think you meant to do it.
