Sprint misstated EVO 4G sales, by a lot
Remember when Sprint said this:
Nuh uh, it's wrong. Sprint just issued a correction in the wee hours stating that first day EVO 4G sales were, in reality, "in line with" the number of Instincts and Pres sold over their first three days on the market combined. Still pretty good if that translates to the 150,000 units sold as some analysts are touting; even better if Sprint can restock shelves."The total number of HTC EVO 4G devices sold on launch day was three times the number of Samsung Instinct and Palm Pre devices sold over their first three days on the market combined."

I don't understand why iPhone users are such sore winners.
@MsCG1
Look at all the comments in any iPhone related thread from all the Fandroids and you'll understand.
@Jack Long time listener, first time caller of Engadget, so I do understand the hostility.
But I also remember a time before Android started picking up steam, and the awful, incessant crowing from ATT and iPhone users about how crappy our service providers were, and how we were all losers because we didn't have any devices that were even close to the iPhone.
The anger and contempt towards Apple, ATT and iPhone users started because they were completely smug, intolerable and unbearable, and Android adoptees got a little overzealous when they were finally given options they could be proud of.
Neither side is innocent and BOTH sides can be obnoxious to the point of frustration, but iPhone users have the entire media, blogging sites, and the WORLD on their side. Coming in to poke Android users with the smug stick just makes them look like bullies. You're like Republicans during the Bush years. You have won, why continue to antagonize?
@MsCG1
Won -what-? There will be some new ultra-super-mega-incredible Android phone announced next week, then *that* one will be the iphone killer. And the week after that. And the week after that...
@MsCG1 I have to agree with you. Before the Droid it was always that people looked down on Android and once Android began to pick up pace, the fandroids started acting just like the ones they hated so much. At this point you can't even blame things on one side anymore because where there's an Apple fanboy starting shit unprovoked there's always an android fanboy doing the same. People, competition is a good thing. Without Apple ad Google, the iPhone and android would only be shadows of what they are today.
@ebon Okay fine. Sprint lied and is on the verge of bankruptcy, EVO is a plastic failure with a $10 fake 4G fee, Android is buggy, unstable, fragmented, needs to try harder etc., etc.
Apple has won the battle in every conceivable way--in sales, in consumer accounts, in the media, in the app store, etc. Hell, Engadget's own editor was on G4TV yesterday and stated that the iPhone 4 was "the best phone he's ever used in his entire life", so yes, you even have Engadget on your side.
But it's never enough, and some of you will probably never be satisfied until Apple goes back to being the sole high end smartphone on the market.
@MsCG1
Actually that's not how it works. Personally I don't go out and bash Android. I only respond to people who are being idiots about Apple/iPhone. But you see how you take that as me being an Android basher?
Personally, I agree with you. The iPhone is the clear winner for now. But I don't go around shoving it in people's faces, I just respond to the usual Apple hating mouth breathers who feel like they have to put Apple down for some reason. Or say the Evo "won", without anything to back it up.
@Jack
I'm not a "Phandroid" a "fangirl", and quite frankly, I have zero brand loyalty. I use a Sansa mp3 player, a Dell netbook running Windows 7, and I've used RIM for years. I have no stake in this battle, but to me, the Apple users come off way worse than the Android users on this site, simply because they have absolutely no reason to be so angry and condescending. None. The Android users are coming from an entirely different place, as the OS is spread across multiple phones, multiple providers, multiple manufacturers, so the competitive edge is ingrained in the platform. I get my hot Android device, and then here comes another two seconds later, so the natural geek's instinct is to defend it.
Apple is it's own walled off Garden of Eden, what happens with their iOS within the holy ATT gates has absolutely nothing to do with Android on any level. So why engage Android users at all?
Even before Sprint screwed up with the sales info, the EVO couldn't/wouldn't come close to iPhone sales right? So why the hell are Apple fans in here to begin with? Happier because it failed WORSE beyond their wildest expectations?
I would expect to see Incredible users in here crowing, because Sprint messed up as badly as Verizon did with phone availability. I would expect Palm users in here crowing, because they've had to deal with the exact same incompetence as EVO users, and didn't get much sympathy. Windows users, same story, Android isn't so superior to them, and sometimes having the hottest phone just isn't enough.
But Apple? What the heck do they have to be angry about? How have they been wronged/failed/disappointed in any way? It's overkill, plain and simple.
doesnt matter.....ppl who bought it love it ppl who don't yearn for it..
Im just saying iPhones are boring jail broken or not... i have a Pre on sprint and yeah it sucks... my g/f has an iPhone 3Gs and i like messing around with things so i Jailbroke it and i always wanted to play with her phone cause it was all the new things i was figuring out... well anyways... Im bored of it jailbroken now... even with installous, back grounder, pro switcher which by the way is better than multi tasking on iPhone os4... an iphone hasn't changed much since 2007
@cilio87
Just because you have severe ADD doesn't mean everybody does.
@Jack
hey jack whats your absolute FAVORITE feature in the new iPhone...
by the way im never this stupid im just being exactly how apple fan boys get...
Coming here and talking smack about the EVO while gloating about the new iPhone... as soon as i say something bad about an iPHone they are like what does that have to do with the topic... losers
@cilio87
It's a phone. Sounds like you want a toy to play with.
@ebon
so if its a phone just like the one before it why do u want the new one so bad???
@cilio87
Where did I say that?
Besides, you're not wanting the devices as what they are intended...you want something you can dick around and tinker with. That's a toy.
@ebon
I know what you meant I'm not a little kid like you... I'm just bored of the iPhone and the Evo would be cheaper per month and serve all my needs inc. Faster internet bigger screen and the ability to customize my home screens with out having springboard crash on a daily basis
@cilio87
My favorite new feature? I like a number of things, mostly the A4 chip and the screen. I also like the new design, and the new camera on the back.
@cilio87 Faster internet? Are you kidding me you can't get 4G ANYWHERE and you will be always stuck on a shitty 2G data network which is 2 times slower than ATT.
So whats the point of a Ferrari if there are no roads to drive it on?
@kyphem
when 4g is unavailable the evo uses 3g. And just because 4g isn't available where you are, doesn't mean it is available NOWHERE. Don't be an idiot.
Droid
Droid Eris
Droid Incredible
Moto Cliq
Hero
Moment
MyTouch
G1
MyTouch Slide
EVO
Android people have more to choose from for their OS of choice. Certain people want an EVO, certain people prefer smaller w/ keyboard, they get a Cliq or MyTouch Slide or G1 even.
Individual Android devices may not have the huge numbers iPhone does because the users have more options. Android will probably become more ubiquitous than iPhone in the long run.
@aztek
And that makes you happy right. It's funny to see Android fanboys wanting their phones to be everywhere, but anybody else dare dream of their phones being everywhere and becoming dominant and these morons can't stand it.
@aztek
No, you don't want to get the first crop of Android phones. We (G1 owners) are stuck with much slower processors and are still on 1.6 Cupcake. Grab the current crop of phones that are shipping with either 2.1 or 2.2; that way you'll ensure yourself of more room for future upgrades to the OS.
Sprint 30 day trial.
poor fandroids
Way to lie to people and missguide them Sprint I will NEVER go to such a lying network.
Sold out is sold out.
If there was demand for a million, and they only had 150K on stock, then they only sold 150K.
tell me why people are throwing in ipads? its not a phone but since you want to bring that in there ima bring in my xbox 360 cause microsoft is beating apple in that department oh yea let me bring in my windows 7 desktop computer cause they are losing been losing and aint coming back.... apple has to try to win the mobile war to stay alive.... to tell you the truth i have never know anyone or seen anyone use a mac computer..... besides the hold ones.... every 1 of my friends that have a computer have pcs its a shame..... and im still waiting to see some 1 with n ipad.... and i live in a big city
Is that line for the Sprint store? It looks like it goes around the corner and keeps going down past the McDonald's. I guess that's just city traffic.
I notice that there's only two women in line, and the second one looks to be part of a group. I wonder how an Apple line compares.
EVO actually sold TWICE as many Pre phones, and SIX times as many Instinct phones. Add up the Pre and Instinct 3 day sales together, and they equal to what the EVO sold in ONE DAY.
I know information can get wrangled and abused, but this is ridiculous...the EVO is still the best selling device Sprint has ever had, period.
@gerrrg Its like saying a shitty newspaper vendor in the subway had the good day selling NYtimes....
@kyphem If it was the best day in sales in the history of that shitty news paper sales person, who are you to criticize?
Good for HTC. Small company which ventures with a awesome HW and sells out and still with some time to produce a second batch before iPhone arrives..
I hope this means they are now more profitable, become more and more respected and keep producing even more top of line phones.
Again, good for HTC. Just don't venture into other markets for now, keep doing what you do best. Phones.
Just wondering... HTC manufactured tablet... how awesome would that be.
Don't worry Sprint, the iPhone 4 will outsell the EVO
So Sprint lied? Then tried to cover it up as a 'mistake'? Why should we listen to anything they have to say when it comes to sales results, when they adamantly refuse to issue sales results?
What are they hiding? I mean I know they continue to lose more subs than they gain, but why are they deliberately misleading investors by first refusing to state how many phones they've sold, then secondly by saying sales of the Evo tripled previous sales?
Engadget stop hatin' on the evo
