Competition and Choice please--Apple and Google, you guys need to figure something out. I don't want to see the two of you start shutting each other out of one another's platforms. That would be bad for the consumer! Capitalism requires competition and choice...lookin' at you Jobsy. We know you're not so hot on other companies stepping into "your" market to compete...and we know you like to control all the choices...but you're gonna have to play nice or Big Brother is gonna slap you in your FaceTime.
@Kanga apple corporate really need to be taken down a notch. there's so many areas where if they're not actually breaking rules, they're pushing them quite hard. just calm down apple. you don't need to control everything to be very profitable. you don't even need to control everything in order to produce products that you think are worthy of your design.
How many times have we heard about Apple being investigated and then nothing afterwards. Steve Jobs even said at D8 that they weren't being investigated. Just another stupid rumor.
And for the record, you can't force another company to accept ads from a competitor. Think about it, would the government force Fox to accept ads promoting another network's shows? Of course not.
Steve jobs is just an elitist. He thinks his products are 30 times better than everyone elses for no reason at all. Unfortunately, people believe him, and gained with popularity is power. That power helped him get away will so much crap that no small business owner would ever get away with, or a large one for that mater. the patient approves are a perfect example.
@Peter Church But Fox WOULD accept ads for companies that WORK with other networks. They didn't stop ADs about Android on the iPhone, they stopped people that WORK with Android. So basically it now makes people not wanna work with Android on things so they could have Ad access on the iPhone, now THAT's anti-trust.
@Atkins But can Apple data mine, I'd presume so, but I'm not sure. If they can't then they have a better shot no actions being taken against them.
In any case, I totally called this, well kinda "Big brother is watching" in the last article on this matter. They are really turning the heat up on telecoms.
In year 19xx we investigated MS and totally screwed them. This year, we have done something magical... We are investigating Apple and pretty sure we'll screw them. This lawsuit is our baby. Hope you love it as much as we do.
Bad comparison. Fox is not in a "walled garden" platform. The viewers of Fox can view whatever they want; be it Glenn Beck, or Michelle Malkin, or gold advertisements that Glenn Beck endorses, or Bill O'reilly, or Sarah Palin, or more Glenn Beck re-runs
People on the web have a very limited understanding of Anti-trust laws. How Apple is blocking AdMob's ability to advertise on Android or the web? AdMob doesn't have a leg to stand on. Forcing Apple to accept ads from Google, would be like forcing Engadget to accept ads from Gizmodo. The only way the Justice Department would even touch this, is if Apple (1) had a monopoly on mobile ads and (2) were using that monopoly to prohibit AdMob from advertising on other platforms.
@Atkins Yes only me, and everyone else that actually researches it. He said that AMOLED wasn't better than his LCD he put in his iPhone, too bad its better. And everyone know that that does the research, but because Steve Jobs says it, people believe him. Thats always been the case with him. And YES the general public is VERY manipulable. I don't say Steve Jobs is evil, I just don't like his motives.
@Peter Church What you are writing is not even the case here. The antitrust investigation would not be about what ads are running on iOS but what advertising service providers can work with it. Apple has to allow all providers to use their platform for advertising. And it does. What it does not do is letting Google evaluate the statistics of these ads. And by doing that Apple is illegally controlling the market.
You don't need a monopoly to file for Anti-trust, all you need to do is have a significant market share and participate in anti-competitive practices.
And considering that AdMob was put on hold from google because they thought that iAd was going to be a fair competitor say itself that they want the Ad business to be balanced, so Apple doing this is a huge flag.
But regardless, they aren't pulling Android ads off the iPhone world, they are pulling Google and anyone that works with them off the iPhone market. So this will eventually lead to Advertisers NOT working with Google in favor of working with Apple which IS Anti-trust worthy.
@corylulu You are not better than Steve, because you are claiming the AMOLED is better than IPS which is not true either. They have different strengths and weaknesses.
And you Paul have poor comprehension. Apple isn't blocking AdMob ads they're saying that their competitors can't use ad analytics, but Apple can. This gives Apple a cost advantage due to targeted advertising.
Whether or not this goes anywhere is up for debate, but at least get it right.
You want competition and choice? Ok, then choose between the competitors, lol.
Your post is conflicting. You want them to get along and work together, but then you site competition as the ideal...well...they are competing...a lot...so let them, the winner will produce the best results.
I honestly don't understand what people are complaining about from a business standpoint. At some point, it doesn't become helpful to work with other people.
@jon "What percentage of the tablet market does Apple have?" A tablet market? What is your definition of tablet market? You can't just get what suits you and call it a market.
@Peter Church And by blocking advertisers like AdMob from being able to collect the data of their ads -- apple has pretty much just created a monopoly in the ad space for the iPhone / iPad / iTouch (and eventually anything else that will run iAds if Apple is left unchecked).
As a customer who would go to one of the various advertising companies, if AdMobs can't give me user statistics and usage in relation to my ad; but iAds can --- you can bet I'll be using iAds.
Pick one and stick with it. Apple has done NOTHING wrong. As before people will talk a bunch of stuff as if they know the situation and how it will play out.
"You can't just get what suits you and call it a market."
I'm not. As the Apple fans are so fond of pointing out, the iPad created the consumer tablet market. Every other attempt has been a dismal failure. Do you think it's a coincidence that nearly all of the DoJ and FTC inquiries started after the launch of the newest iProduct.
I also don't think it's chance that all of Apple's competitors are delaying their own entries into the segment.
I think on some level they're giving Apple just enough rope to hang themselves with.
What you dont remember the 10 year period where Microsoft got sued for half the companies worth several times for monopoly and anti-trust suites within there own product.
You CANNOT have a MONOPOLY on your own product. I guess Coca Cola has a monopoly on coke and all coke products then. Why isn't the government investigating them then, LOL. You guys have no idea what you're talking about.
Can you geniuses give me a few examples of instances where the government forced a corporation to accept advertisements from another corporation? Please link to it.
There also another issue that no one here has addressed. For the government to have a case against Apple, they must demonstrate that Apple's practices are harmful to consumers, not just a rival company. As a point of fact, one of the provisions that Apple is using to bar AdMob is related to privacy issues with analytics. Apple could demonstrate to the government (if this rumor is true) that they are actually protecting consumers by barring AdMob from their phones.
@Peter Church You are dumb.. Apple invented advertising ?? LOL. If you didn't see this coming the day Steve spoke the word iAD and nothing else would be allowed.. you blew it.
@jon "As the Apple fans are so fond of pointing out, the iPad created the consumer tablet market. Every other attempt has been a dismal failure." Doesn't matter what they point out. To have monopoly, first you must have a defined market (not to mention monopoly in itself isn't illegal). We don't have a "tablet market". We have a computer market, mobile market, whatever. Wherever you put the iPad its share is nothing today.

@cr3amy
Don't know what just happened...
I was saying that everybody should have seen this coming.

Suck That Steve Jobs
@Kanga Thus far, it seems like google hasn't shut apple out of anything. Apple, on the other hand....
@Kanga
yep, we all knew this was coming
@Kanga
apple corporate really need to be taken down a notch. there's so many areas where if they're not actually breaking rules, they're pushing them quite hard. just calm down apple. you don't need to control everything to be very profitable. you don't even need to control everything in order to produce products that you think are worthy of your design.
@Kanga
Apple is getting more and more like a monopoly.
@Kanga
How many times have we heard about Apple being investigated and then nothing afterwards. Steve Jobs even said at D8 that they weren't being investigated. Just another stupid rumor.

@victor Google can put all their stuff on Apple's devices. They are just restricted from data mining.
@techlord Monopoly? Apple? LOL.

well, we've only heard that there being looked into. Nothing more, nothing less.
So yes, your right, it could amount to nothing but on the other hand, it could amount to everything.
@corylulu Oh, yes, people are dumb and believe evil Jobs and only you see the truth. Whatever.
@Atkins But can Apple data mine, I'd presume so, but I'm not sure. If they can't then they have a better shot no actions being taken against them.
In any case, I totally called this, well kinda "Big brother is watching" in the last article on this matter. They are really turning the heat up on telecoms.
@corylulu
At this rate, FTC and DoJ would soon have their own Keynotes.
@Peter Church it takes long then a month to investigate a company for anti-trust ...
@who said what
In year 19xx we investigated MS and totally screwed them.
This year, we have done something magical... We are investigating Apple and pretty sure we'll screw them. This lawsuit is our baby. Hope you love it as much as we do.
@corylulu Google can put their ads on the iPhone. Get your facts straight.
@who said what WWDOJC
Second comment is is meaningless.
Apple is about to hit the same road as MS did some time ago.. Someone who knows if EU also plans to investigate Apple?
@Kanga It seems like a one way shut out no?
Google Voice denied
Google Mobile ads denied
@Peter Church

They might have shot themselves in the foot with the iPad.
@Peter Church

It's simple.
@techlord
A monopoly with a tiny share of the market. It's amazing the markup they get for their products. If they had the market share MS has, then WOW....
That said, I don't like Apple's business practices and I hope they are fined and what not IF there is something wrong.
@jon "What percentage of the tablet market does Apple have?"

That's where the problem lies.
@Kanga
More hypocrisy from the Apple Haters.
You want choice? You want competition?
Well its quite simple. Google vs Apple
Pick one and stick with it. Apple has done NOTHING wrong. As before people will talk a bunch of stuff as if they know the situation and how it will play out.
@Kanga
Wonder what will happen if Google decides to not have Youtube support HTML5!
@Velmeran "apple has pretty much just created a monopoly in the ad space for the iPhone / iPad / iTouch"
You can't have monopoly on you own product.
@Kanga
Where has Google shut out Apple? Just curious where you think this exists.
@Peter Church
you obviously don't know what you're talking about. Ever seen a cable ad while watching DirectTV or vice versa?
@Atkins
Tell Microsoft that 5 years ago.
@Atkins
"You can't just get what suits you and call it a market."

Apple seems to be obliging.
@corylulu Analogy fail.
@BrookLynnsFinest In the boxing ring:
Google vs Apple.... is what Google wants and what the law says
Apple vs Google (with one arm tied behind the back)... is what Apple does here
