Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 'Rockstar' contest wraps up, neat apps ensue
The success of Windows Phone 7 as a commercially viable mobile platform will ultimately depend on a great many things, but one of the biggest factors might be its chops as a gaming setup -- so naturally, we're excited to see each and every WP7 game that gets previewed right now. In March, Microsoft kicked off its so-called Rockstar competition, where student teams competed to make awesome apps (games or otherwise) for the platform in their choice of Silverlight or XNA -- and the results of the competition are finally in. Two of the top three winners were games, and the grand champion was a game by the name of -- wait for it -- "Droid." Members of the team are receiving $8,000 plus a Windows Phone, and while none of these apps are the most polished things in the world, it's a promising sign that these students were able to come in fresh on a brand new platform and produce solid version 1.0 software in less than three months' time. Hit up Microsoft's Windows Blog for the full list of winners.

@izzykareem, I really want that Four Square application. Easily appears to be the best version out there so far.
@izzykareem Since Microsoft has a few more restrictions on apps being submited, developers will not submit as many useless apps as in other devices. For example the famous "fart apps" and many other similar apps. If windows mobile 7 never gets as many apps as the iphone/android I hope the few apps they have are actually usefull apps.
here are some cool apps http://www.ditii.com/2010/04/28/hulu-app-concept-for-windows-phone-7-by-clarity-consulting/
I submitted an Xbox app for there new contest.

Is this the new evo 4g killer
@LOVEISPEACE2012EVOLUTION .. Almost every phone will be an EVO 4G killer because it doesn't work on GSM so any phone sold internationally will quickly eclipse it in sales.
pretty good article on WP7 by pc world. http://www.pcworld.com/businesscenter/article/198411/the_case_for_holding_out_for_windows_phone_7.html?tk=hp_new
Its def going to be the iphone killer.
WP7 is going to surprise lot of people.
book mark it!
@pinktacoyummm .. No WP7 is going to be another Zune HD. A truly wonderful, unappreciated device about 2 years too late to market.
@taligent
so true.. unfortunately, this seems to be the issue with Microsoft lately. They are like the fat kid that runs slower than his friends, and when he finally catches up the fun is over.
@taligent i think WinPho7 will find much more appreciation than the Zune, and hopefully they plan on releasing a new Zune worldwide this summer that plays all of these windows marketplace apps well
Really? gaming chops will determine it's success? Maybe I'm just getting older or maybe I just never found the appeal of mobile gaming (had an original Gameboy) but this just seems unlikely to be a real force behind adoption for a phone platform. IMHO, and maybe I'm wrong, but a real make/break feature for mobile platforms is not only the ease of use, speed, connectivity, reliability and such that one would expect in a platform but also in multimedia. Granted you could probably lump games in with MM, but to me PMP features, including MM streaming of audio and video is really where it's at. Games are a fine time waster when standing around at the DMV, but give me productivity apps with great task switching response and the ability to consume media in as many forms as possible. I admit to playing a few when I first got my iPhone but they get boring pretty damned quick an there's so much more I'd rather do when I've got 20-30 minutes to kill.
@AlienSix
Ya me too.. Last I seen people were just talking about how the numbers would really give away which the better phone is.
We werent even arguing or doing anything terrible, just the regular Evo pwnz and iphone owns stuff..
WHY ENGADGET?
Silverlight and XNA are so much easier to program in than Android or iOS's stuff. Awesome development tools are the ace up Microsoft's sleeve.
WP7 is DOA. It brings nothing new to the game and its actually *more* locked down than iOS. Those hideous Kin phones didn't help matters either. In short, the perfect failstorm.
@psycros How do you know its DOA, Nostradamus?
Give me fridays lottery numbers.
thanks!
also please don't talk about the OS if you don't know anything about it. brings nothing new to the game? what about xbox live on the phone? I am guessing all the phones at the moment have that huh?
@pinktacoyummm not to mention there is finally a phone OS that is aesthetically pleasing, the whole infinite app icons layout was so damn banal and tired im glad Microsoft researched typography and graphic design for their OS... the apps and interface makes the other OS' look like they are years behind
Uh... Droid Does?!!
I just wanna play UNO on xbl using my phone dang it!
