Motorola Droid 2 fully exposed?
And finally, the puzzle pieces are coming together. There's been a lot of confusion the past few weeks about these two new models for Verizon in Motorola's pipeline, but by all accounts, this seems to be the A955 Droid 2 in its entirety -- the true successor to the original Droid, of course, and a distinctly different product than the more slate-like Xtreme. It looks like Moto has killed off the Droid's major pain points, giving the new model a more tactile keyboard and eliminating the nearly useless d-pad; the shiny bezel around the top half is a matter of personal opinion, but we don't think we mind it from the blurry shots we've seen.
As specs go, we're looking at a faster 750MHz OMAP core -- probably similar to the 720MHz silicon quoted in the XT720's data -- along with a 3.7-inch display, 8GB of internal storage paired with an 8GB microSD card in the box, and a 5 megapixel camera. What's missing is an HDMI port and Froyo -- current test units are said to be running 2.1, so hopefully we'll see a 2.2 upgrade in the near term. So, Droid owners: is this the golden ticket to get you to shell out another couple hundred dollars? As a bonus, follow the break for alleged video of the Droid 2's boot sequence, which shows a reworked version of the scary red droid eye we're accustomed to.

i like
@skyblaze
god, is verizon greedy with the android handsets or what
@skyblaze And I just got a droid :(
Could Verizon make their logo any bigger?
@skyblaze i'll wait until the 2gh version...
@1 Infinite Loop Cupertino CA
Yes, but they're trying to keep it classy.
@skyblaze: I don't like. I prefer the render. I'll stick with my N1 for now.
@kidphat
ummm no.
EVVVVVVOOOOOOOOO
That isn't much of an update.
@kidphat agreed. I'm Android 2.2 and Flash equipped.
@1 Infinite Loop Cupertino CA
still ugly, but oh well
@skyblaze am i the only one who finds this update to offer no real improvements. also those rounded edges look god damn awful
Yeah, I like too. But I LOVE my Droid. I even have an EVO right now too but it just doesn't sway me from my Droid. Not the Incredible, not the EVO, not even the Droid 2 [so far] can convince me to buy new hardware.
@skyblaze
It doesn't look nearly as professional or classy as the Droid.
@24kJames I'm in the same boat. The Droid is just so perfect for me. Best phone I have ever have and is still one of the best Android phones around. The only thing I thought could pull me away from the Droid, was the Droid II. but I am left disappointed. The processor, keyboard, and 8GB internal memory is very nice, but its not a big enough upgrade...
@skyblaze meh, its almost the same as the old Driod and not even running 2.2? Definitely getting the iPhone 4 can't wait =)
@1 Infinite Loop Cupertino CA
looks the same size as current
@skyblaze
If it has FroYo, people will buy it. Other than that, I don't see a reason for people to get it.
@ppmcdoodles
Exactly.. Looks more like a downgrade.. Im happy w/ my current Droids keyboard.. I think they took a step forward, but then 2 back..
@24kJames Encouraging comment. Leaving BB this month. Droid starting to sound real good.
@HelghanSuperSniper I'm android 2.2 and flash equipped on my droid too.
@skyblaze
So will this 750 MHz processor be able to run Flash 10.1 on OS 2.2 or what? I thought the lower limit was going to be 1 GHz Snapdragon. People are going to be pissed if they can't run their precious mobile Flash.
@skyblaze FYI i think the keyboard is a like HTC Universal, but HTC has the dedicate key row thou
@skyblaze
Not enough improvement to make on the Droid itself - it's pretty great as is. Sure there are some minor quirks to punch out, but still, you gotta admit the Droid is physically stable, being one of the few Android handsets with a physical keyboard.
Got my Droid a couple months back, so I can't complain - I can't upgrade anytime soon anyway, which means, we can only imagine the sweet new phones beyond Fall 2011.
@skyblaze
Physically, it looks like an HTC Touch Pro with a bigger screen to me... Mostly the keyboard.
Whas the point in upgrading? All it seems to have is a slightly faster processor and a slightly better keyboard, I like the Milestones keyboard (one of the very few who do) and I can very easily over-clock my processor as my Android is rooted.
Why would you upgrade? minor processor bump, minor keyboard tweek.
@skyblaze
It has my HTC's Wizard keyboard...
hm, I hope the keyboard is a little more tactile
@Alexicov
That'll be the least of your worries if those infamous capacitive button designs means there is gonna be an infamous UI to come along with it.
@HTCAndroidTre
Unfortunately MOTOBLUR is confirmed......
I was so stoked on this phone too....
@HTCAndroidTre
Good observation. Whereas the Droid has the N1-like Back, Menu, Home, Search arrangement, the Droid 2 seems to be following the setup more common on skinned phones. If the Droid 2 has Blur, it won't tempt me away from my Droid 1 in any way. Not even an 8mp camera?
This is like the Droid 1.2
@Alexicov
I don't like the arrow keys...
@shocklat
You can turn motoblur off...
@DoctarPeppar
but will i still get my semi-fast software upgrades? i mean i had a long wait with just getting stock 2.1. And there hasnt been 1 blur phone (to my knowledge) thats been bumped up about 1.6.
I may just have to polish my droid, cuz its probably gonna last me at least to December the way things are going now
@QuadCityImages
I couldn't have said it any better myself. If I was to upgrade, the Droid Xtreme would be the handset of choice, but looks like I'm gonna be sticking with my O.G. Moto Droid for a bit longer.
@kjones555
same here man, im gonna wait for the real droid 2 not this crap
this is what i expect from the next REAL droid 2:
1) brighter screen (its not bad but could be better now)
2) better keyboard(the one in the pic looks ok but i would like a different color scheme, not this blue[maybe red???]
3) better battery life(the battery in the current droid is small compared to the N1 or EVO, so make it bigger rather than down clocking the processor)
4) camera (the camera now is good but i have to take 5 pictures to get a good one[1 out of the five actually turns out good], ao improve the camera like the EVO's or better) also i love the FLASH :)
5) optimization of the GPU ( as you all have heard that the droid has an amazing GPU and good CPU[not the best but good], so optimize the gpu for all ALL visual effects and leave the Cpu for raw computing)
6) FROYO!!!! or whatever 2.3 is
7)make the whole phone allophonic or whatever its called (anti oil coated) because this thing is a grease bucket!
8) make a slide mechizm for the camera so its protected and a stand like the EVO
9)build construction is great but could be better. this phone was made in like 8 months so moto can do better. they should make the phone out of more metal (aluminum) and glass for the display(not coping apple)
10)make more features such as a mini HDMI, dual micro USB(asking a lot lol, front facing camera, better hinge, dual micro sd slots in place of where the SIM slot should be(verizon edition or hopefully), and to save us all NO MOTOBLUR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I love my droid, i have had it since it came out. I am currently running a droid over clocked to 800 MHz and 2.2 goodness. these are things that i would love to happen. get rid of that dam m sign on your phones! keep it on the battery but not the phone itself
PS: CORTEX A9 and nothing else needs to be said... but the droid is the best android phone with a keyboard on the market as we speak so lets keep this going the right way moto :) sincerly-
theonlysmr
make it happen moto!
@Alexicov
I'm not gunna lie if there was a keyboard similar to the enV Touch (I prefer slide over flip) with Snapdragon, Froyo, and an amazing pixel dense screen I'd wait infront of the store for days just to get it!
@theonlysmr
"Get rid of the m sign?" - You hate the Motorola logo? I think it looks freakin' awesome. About the other stuff you're mostly right, I'm afraid.
HOPEFULLY no blur, needed to be said
@Alexpeegs Oh fail me much
@Alexpeegs God I hope it doesn't, but in everything I've seen it appears to. This has the Blur style buttons, and when it boots you see the color scheme of Blur, not stock Android :(
@Alexpeegs
blur is confirmed...check the source article
Dear Motorola:
STOP putting MotoBlur on your Android sets. Just stop.
In fact, issue out MotoBlur removal tools on the firmware updates of your old devices.
Signed,
All of your potential customers
@Elranzer Seriously, does ANYBODY like MotoBlur??? I have not heard one good comment from it
There looks to be a something to the right of the speaker
@cephalotus Just an LED light. All Android phones have them.
@choffy21 O ok cool
@choffy21
Actually, I think its a proximity or a video call camera...
If Xtreme is the final name for the other handset, I'll xplode.
