Motorola wants a 2GHz Android by year's end, so do we
Looks like we didn't get the full dish from Sanjay Jha's bout of loquaciousness this morning. It turns out Moto's chief of handsets has also expressed his company's intention to bring the world its first 2GHz smartphone and to do so on an aggressively accelerated roadmap. By the end of the year, Sanjay? Yes please. Another Moto exec is cited as saying NVIDIA Tegra will be providing the graphics prowess, Flash 10.1 will be fully supported, and a gyroscope will accompany HD video recording and output on the dreamy spec sheet. We wouldn't invest all of our trust in the conveniently anonymous exec's promised specs, but that 2GHz number comes straight from the top -- let the countdown begin.

OMG HOLY HELL!
@Paul Elmy
I was gonna say the same. And here I was holding out for a 1.5ghz phone !!
Mobile Processor wars coming...
@corylulu
And here I was waiting for the first 1.3ghz smartphone.
MOTO, I JUST BOUGHT MY EVO, HOW COULD YOU DO THIS TO ME?!
@iamnotjamesh
except this time Intel might not be on top. but im sure they will be trying to be.
Whoa momma... i just hope they don't use any silly skin on it and leave it at a stock gingerbread android. (which i'm hoping will have an improved UI made by the guy from Palm)
@Paul Elmy
"and a gyroscope "
Seriously? It gets hard to defend the statement that they don't copy Apple!
Why not a thermal sensor, finger print reader... whatever. Something different at least...
@who said what
Okay, fine, they improve on it. Then, what about apple repackaging video calling as facetime?
@who said what
Probably so the apps that are developed to be used with apples can be ported to android.
@iamnotjamesh Going to lead to battery charging wars. NO THATS MY OUTLET!
@gargle
Apple got the guy from Palm. Not Google.
@who said what because gyroscopes are the next big thing. Any apple copied google's idea of putting a digital compass in the G1 and now every phone has one.
And I thought "we" had realized that the GHz race didn't really take us very far. Now I guess we start all over again.
@who said what It makes a lot of sense though.. anything they make will be compared to the iPhone. They want to be able to say, 'we match every feature, and add HDMI, 2gh tegra, etc..'
@Paul Elmy
No, I'm not saying Apple doesn't copy ever.
But, gyroscope, immediately after they release it?
My point is why not take some time come out with something one step better and make us go wow, rather than just saying... we too have it. (please don't go into iOS or Android debate)... I'm talking hardware solutions.
And yes, Apple does do that... but look how they did Facetime and brought with it a new open standard. How good or bad it is, I don't know as I don't have the device yet, or the technical skills to understand the code beneath... that's what I'm saying... why can't moto do one step better by bringing something new than just tout GHzs and MPs. Not that it hurts... 2GHz would be smoking...
@SeeKo '
And in other news, battery makers struggle to keep up with processors which have managed to reduce battery life to a meager 20 minutes. More details coming soon
@dustinlenguyen
there were two guys. the head of software design when to google. one of the designers (who invented the notifications system specifically) went to apple.
@safe travels
Yeah, that's what I meant lol.
@safe travels
*went.
@Paul Elmy
It's 1999 all over again, except now in portable computing! Bring it on!!
@who said what
Hmm, you see, that's how motorola made their reputation.
I can't blame them copying.
From the release of the droid, motorola has made a name for itself.
Looking at the past before the droid, i'm pretty sure they were struggling in the mobile division. I guess, the only way they can be in business, is just stuffing in more good stuff? They just want to be the best.
@Paul Elmy : Dude cannot smile can he? Look Mr.Sanjhay, I know where you come from, I can't smile with my teeth either. Close your mouth when your smile. It helps it not look cheezy.
@who said what What's wrong with that? Jesus Christ, nobody stole anyone's baby or anything. If companies didn't invent off and borrow numerous ideas and styles from other companies, we'd be fucking. nowhere.
How can anyone even scoff at the progression of tech?
"OMG, my cell phone provider supports LTE right after Verizon did"
"I can't believe my new cell phone has a 12MP camera, someone's being a c/p"
"Really Nokia, now your phones have Super AMOLED? Copiers"
smh
@dustinlenguyen
Your an idiot Google got palms GUI designer, Apple got palms notification designer
@dustinlenguyen they both got two different guys from Palm...Google the UX dude (needed) and Apple the Notifications dude (needed).
@Paul Elmy 3D gaming on mobile is just in its infancy. Imagine the bump this would give it! Tegra graphics with a 2GHz (probably Cortex A9) CPU would make for some rather smooth polygons! Also, we're seeing more of a move to 45nm fab on these ARM-based CPUs. That should mean battery life will actually increase when chips like this hit.
@Paul Elmy
Approved.
If your a mobile phone junkie or dev, you head likely just exploded. Cause even if Moto doesn't hit it, another vendor just may out do them.
Sorry Apple, the bar has been raised. Ante up guys.
@Paul Elmy - MEH!
I’m no Apple fan Boy but this is the difference between the “Job-O the Hutt syndicate” and the rest of these nudniks. See, Steve OG doesn’t talk concepts that are months and years away. Whenever he is done yapping, SHIT IS READY IN A WEEK! And I still don’t get how these “old guard” phone manufacture’s got caught slippin so bad letting the likes of new jacks like HTC and Apple P0wn EM so hard! Hey Sanjay, shut up about it unless its close to delivery and you are ready to take my ca$h! Sayin...
@who said what
So because they are including a gyroscope they are copying apple?
I guess that means since apple put an accelerometer in their 1st iPhone, that means they copied the Nintendo Wii..
Seriously.. eventually ALL phone are going to include ALL of these things.. its going to be how these technologies are implemented that defines their difference in the mobile phone game
@mastermindnate These manufacturers should start offering free Buyer's Remorse counseling.
@dustinlenguyen Google got the guy who made the design and UI for WebOS. Apple got the webos notifications architect.
@Paul Elmy
2 GIGAHERTZ EVO PLEASE !!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rEoGrvA9tps
@trong
Droid Goliath; sounds good ehhhh? Do it Moto!
@who said what
How about a pregancy tester on the pink ones? Or a booze sniffer on the Lindsay Lohan model? Perhaps a gender sniffer on the Lady Gaga version? I'd personally go for an STD sensor on the Club Hopping model...man, I'm sick ;)
@marxman
LIES! Everything Apple does is magical and innovative! They copy nobody! :P
@TheTabe
You're a great liar, TheTabe.
@who said what Furthermore, you kinda contradicted yourself in your second post. You're talking about "hardware solutions" and using FaceTime as an example. FaceTime is nothing except software. Everything else is the same: hardware, externals and internals. Standards and software are the only thing that's pretty groundbreaking. FaceTime is just the software injunction to the secondary camera.
With that said, Moto's a hardware company. Keep in mind that besides that, WiMax, LTE, higher resolution displays and a bigger screen, Moto can only do Ghz and MP's. Why would they make something like FaceTime? They can make the secondary camera, but it's not entirely up to them, they're using Android. The devs could do that, and probably do a fantastic job at it. Motorola doesn't need to do anything in that regard.
@Chaosdivine
And maybe a freakin spell checker for me too... :(
@corylulu
Yes, but a dual-core 1.5 GHz (or 1.2 GHz) phone would be faster than a single-core 2 GHz phone.
@recharged95
The anty has been raised because someone said "we think its cool if phones had 2ghz processors in a year." ? Really? Really?
@SeeKo
Everyone knows the technology tree goes Memory -> GHz -> Screen Resolution (apple is skipping the GHz talent) -> Then Cores. Until the expansion comes out with the Quantum Processors. They might add DNA computers in the next patch though.
@marxman
Apple also "copied" the Nexus One's dual mics. It is funny how Apple fanboys only recognize it as "copying" one way, but never acknowledge when Apple is doing the "copying".
@who said what and a 2ghz processor in the phone isn't the wow you're looking for?
@Paul Elmy
how about making the battery lasts all day? yeah, lets focus on that before putting 10ghz chip on that droid
@N900
FaceTime was just an example of how to take something existing and add to it, rather than just implement it to claim that Feature X is available.
My actual point was still about Gyroscope. And no, copying is inevitable... eventually all phones will have similar hardware with each company bumping it every year. But I was expecting a little more from Moto I guess. My mistake.
@Midnitte
"Everyone knows the technology tree goes Memory -> GHz -> Screen Resolution -> Then Cores"
In that case everyone is forgetting about resources saving programming which is the main reason for speed enhancement.
@who said what You know the Motorola Q9N, which was never really released for VZW had a fingerprint reader.....just saying
@jakey I thought nexus one instantly when dual mics came up but i also instantly thought iphone when seeing gyroscope
@Paul Elmy I'd be happier with a doubling of battery capacity/life...
@who said what No no, my friend, you're not at fault for that. I'm just saying that it's something everyone does, and pointing out a synergy between hardware and software. Apple can implement a gyroscope and make software for it, just like they can implement secondary cameras and the FaceTime software; so that's a boon. If Motorola does implement Gyroscope, it's just a hardware implement. They don't necessarily need to add their own layer of software atop Android. The devs can do it as well, and simultaneously make that standard for any other phone manufacturers implementing the hardware feature. That way you don't have an example of fragmentation: Motorola's software implementation looking better than Samsung's, or worse than HTC, vis-a-vis.
