Samsung shocks the pico projector world with SP-H03

Samsung's just rolled out its first ever pico projector, the SP-H03. The little thing boasts 1GB of internal memory, a microSD slot, and projects WVGA video at 30 lumens, a 1 watt speaker, and supports both open and proprietary codecs. It's got a battery life of about two hours and weighs in a 6 ounces. Other than that, it's a pretty standard looking pico affair, and it's available now for $300.

I am both First & SHOCKED :O
@emanas
You know what? I cringe everytime when something this "small" is posted without a comparison picture.
Just how am i to visualize how large/small this thing is when I do not have a reference pic?
@egress63
I was thinking the same thing. It actually doesn't look at the small, but at 6 ounces I'm sure I'm wrong...a comparison picture would be quite nice though.
@egress63
thats how small http://www.thedigitalnewsroom.com/uploads/Ecran/Samsung/SH03/H03_90.jpg
@tylersmyler
Oooh... now thats small! when do they start putting these things in cellphones? That would be cool!
@egress63 Maybe you could click on the link that Engadget gracefully supplied. Maybe you will even see ::gasp:: a video of it! ;)

@egress63
It's pocket-able.
take a look at this link http://www.thedigitalnewsroom.com/en/News/2811/Samsung_unveils_pocket_sized_pico_projector_SP_H03.htm
@emanas
I didn't know that such out-of-date weight metrics worked with modern technology.
@egress63 2.5 x 1.5 x 2.5 inches
@egress63
The sheer volume of 'That's what she said!' opportunities in this thread overwhelms me.
@emanas i like the idea of pico-projectores but the 300$ pricetag is just ridiculous for the measly 30 lumens and wvga resolution you get.
I want an array of these on my desk!
How big is this? Look's massive!
need some scale!

@bech O_o Tiny. The picture in this article is very misleading.
Why doesn't anyone ever click on the source article? The video tells all.

I'm really like the controls on the actual unit like that.
30 Lumens...
How dark does the room have to be? :-/
@jpxdude
Really really dark.
It'd be nice if the picture had some object for size reference. As it is, the thing could be the size of a quarter, or a can of Coke, or a house, or anything in between.
@Khav
Like 2 cigarette packs over another. 2.5 x 1.5 x 2.5 inches.
If it's a "standard... pico affair", what's so shocking about it?
@Bondsteel
certain engadget authors have been overusing (abusing?) the "affair" phrase...i know this news is the real shocker!
Crap - at first that looked like 3D :(
Assuming the lens is the size of a camera phone, this may be pretty small, but the form factor is baffling. It seems to me that the main market for pico projectors is for connections to smart phones. If your bothering to lug around any other source, you've got room for a normal projector. While internal storage is nice, a useful projector generally has a host. This one's shape oddly seems to deliberately prevent it from being pocket sized. In overall volume, it may be as small as the Microvision for example, but isn't anywhere near as pocket compatible.
I agree with others - Shock Who? Dell has had a 50 lumen version for over a year. HP just came out with a 100 lumen pico projector as well (AX325AA). They don't say which display engine they are using. Is it DLP or LCos? I am still waiting for someone to come out a pico projector built-in to a laptop. They are already protos for smartphone projectors.
ounces........ ye olde king wanteth his turnip soupe now too
Errm, 30 lumens? That's enough for about one square foot in a dimly lit room. You could project a ~18" 4x3 image onto a wall and get acceptable brightness. I'd be more interested when these things hit 200 lumens, at which point you can get decent brightness on a 46" image in a dimly lit room. At that point, the size is getting big enough to be useful.
Why MicroSD? Just to be small? An SD slot isn't THAT large, _and_ most flash-based video cameras use SD so it would be a lot more convenient to have an SD slot.
I'll get one when the price drops to $100 and the resolution goes up to 1280x720
This will be an amazing projector!
