@Eastman I enabled the wallpapers feature and it's sooo damn slow on my 3G I'm not surprised it's not enabled by default. On the other hand, they could've optimized it a bit more.
@witq that is apples poor coding. Placing a wallpaper using winterboard on a jailbrokeb device doesn't slow shit down. Heck I even had video playing as my background on the original iPhone and that didn't slow it down. Not having a custom background is bullahit.
@DefPoet Apple's implementation is more graphically intense. It has icons and text drop shadows, plus some resources are being used by folders. On 3GS it runs very smooth.
On my 3G it runs smooth too. The 3G still has PLENTY of power to draw a wallpaper. If you have slow downs its something else because I've got wallpapers and multitasking running on my 3G just fine. Sure, apps crash if I have too much multitasking going since it doesn't have enough memory, but it runs great otherwise. Do you seriously think that a wallpaper is too much for an iPhonr when we used to run wallpapers all day on computers with a fraction of the power? And drop shadows or a little alpha blending isn't too much for it either. It already runs much more complex games with no issue.
Yeah I'm on a 3G, iTunes 9.2 n iOS 4...no wallpaper, but just wanted to check it out since I'm upgrading 2 a new iPhone 4 soon. But if iBooks is available n 3G users have it, what's the process to get it? Might b a iTunes Store only thing u have 2 sync. I'll check n post again shortly;)

@witq I had the same problem. Follow these instructions and it runs way faster on your iPhone 3G or iPod Touch 2G...
