AT&T data down across the Southeast, Puerto Rico? (update: should be back to normal)
This hasn't exactly been a banner week for wireless uptime; Sprint, AT&T, and Verizon have all seen some trouble over the course of the past few days, and now we're getting tipped that AT&T data services are down once again in the Southeast. Last time, the problems seemed limited to Florida, but now we're hearing that customers spanning from Atlanta to Louisiana are having trouble -- and even Puerto Rico has apparently been pulled into the mess. What's everyone seeing out there?[Thanks to everyone who sent this in]
Update: Everything should've been back online as of roughly midnight ET last night. Here's the statement we've received from AT&T:
"Due to an earlier equipment issue caused by a fiber cut, some customers in the Southeast region experienced issues with their 3G data service. AT&T technicians quickly worked to resolve the issue, and all service should be up and running. We apologize for any inconvenience to our customers."

Conspiracy effect imo, soon everyone will be using capped data plans.
@ComeShot
Has this been confirmed by AT&T? The only references I can find all point back to Engadget's post.
@ComeShot
The oil is clogging all the tubes!
@ComeShot I live in Southwest Florida and I'm not having any issues. In fact, I have full bars of 3G service in my office where I normally have 2 bars of EDGE. So whatever this outage is doing is effecting me in the most positive of manners.
@RyanTV
sounds more like an in-age than an outage for you =P
@ComeShot
Where's T-Mobile data issues mentioned in this post?
Oh... wait... data's butter smooth on T-Mobile in the Southeast.
*Zing*
@ComeShot Sad but true. OMG that's me! Wait, no it's not... I have Verizon... ;)
@ComeShot It was a disaster! Three hours without data because some nodes failed in Caguas. Even though I, working at a help desk, felt sorry for their team at that moment.
everything is fine here in Clearwater, Florida.
@JeanMarc ditto, had problems on Wednesday, but all good here north of Clearwater (Tampa bay area) Wednesday was 3g data only, edge worked fine.
@JeanMarc
fine in philly
@JeanMarc
everything is fine here in Orlando, FL
my phone has been fine.... so far
Miami, Fl
it's "no packet-data" in Tallahassee
Down here in Duluth, GA (metro Atlanta area). On chat with AT&T rep who this was news to. I had to tell her that while I've been on chat this entry was posted.
@xanatos451
try edge...working fine in the same locale as you.
3G is down though
@oardietrying - Yeah, did that when it first went down as I thought my radio was finally giving up the ghost. My 3g iPhone has constantly been dropping to No Service over the past few months. I've done everything from reset network settings to a complete wipe and fresh start. Still not sure if my phone has an issue or not but at least I'm glad it didn't die completely today. I've been swearing against buying a new iPhone since a few months after I bought this one but the new one is so damned sexy looking I am contemplating signing my soul over to AT&T/Apple once more.
Heh... no problems here.
Oh wait... I'm in Australia. We got our own problems called "Optus" and "Telstra".
@buoy
Haha telstra = expensive as shit
optus = shit coverage but good value
hmm I'm torn - naa optus all the way
Full 3g signal here in Altamonte springs, FL!
Full 3G here in Inverness, FL
@Denial cool i live there too!!!
blames BP trying to keep people from sharing camera-phone pics of the oil damage. ;-)
@TheTick247 +1
I've heard that they have their thugs out at beaches threatening people who are trying to take pics of the spill.
@greezyg
No they don't
@greezyg id say fuck them and go right head and proceed to the beach and take as many pics as you want unless an actual govt official with a badge tells you otherwise. Its public land.
Maybe carry a weapon too, if they get physical and lay a hand on you, threaten back.
@d0ug
I heard that BP is recruiting armed mercenaries with chainsaws to cut down anyone who goes near an affected beach, after that they pour vodka on the victim and set them alight.
See I can make up bullshit you'll believe as well!
@KosherTelephone
Obviously that's BS cuz why would they waste perfectly good vodka? Maybe because they're running low on gas reserves and need to use another fuel source...
In the Tampa bay area we are all good.
no 3G or EDGE here in Atlanta for over an hour now

@paulodourado
Where are you Atlanta guys located exactly? I'm in Sandy Springs and have no issues, but I see some guys up in Duluth and Alpharetta saying they are out. Trying to see how localized it is north or south or all over...
@NopeNotThisTime I'm right at Northridge and Roswell Rd in northern Sandy Springs/southern Roswell and EDGE works fine. Have a friend up in Alpharetta that's not getting anything though.
@chripuck - Edge doesn't seem to be the issue. It doesn't switch automatically over to Edge though for the most part, 3G icon just disappears even with full bars. If you switch off 3G and force Edge it seems to resolve the issue with data, though it's of course slower.
MY IPHONE WORKS PERFECT IM IN PUERTO RICO AND I CALL MY SISTER IN LONGWOOD FLORIDA AND SHE SAID EVERYTHING WORKS FINE
@ZIXTO STOP SCREAMING!
I can confirm that right now there is no data service in Cupey Puerto Rico.
None of my working buddies have data service 3G or EDGE.
No signal here in Mayaguez, Puerto Rico
No problems in Sandy Springs, Ga. (metro atlanta)

@BrookLynnsFinest Someones a little arrogant about their iPhone, no?
Yup, down in Athens, GA. C'mon verizon iphone!!
Cannot connect via wap.cingular APN. San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Mine is out. Im in Atlanta.
Lets clarify that this is just DATA down, not voice/text. It may just be 3g too
@dswatson83 - Yeah, seems to be just a 3G data issue. Edge works if I switch off 3G and haven't had any issues with voice.
Knoxville to Tri Cities TN reporting all conditions normal. Full 3G working fine.
data is definitely down for the past hour or so..new orleans
All is well in Columbia, SC (although I am noticing some serious lag)
