The
Dreamcast lives on!
Crazy Taxi and
Sonic Adventure are reviving Sega's final console, only this time on Microsoft and Sony's hardware. They are the two inaugural titles that will hit the Xbox Live Arcade and PlayStation Network later this year, to be followed by other classics from Sega's better days. As the now software-only company tells it, you'll basically be getting the original games, replete with (slightly) higher-res visuals, surround sound, online leaderboards, and Trophy and Achievement integration. We don't know what pricing will be like just yet, but
Sonic Adventure will be coming at us in time for the 11th anniversary of the Dreamcast's original launch in the US (September 9, 1999).

LONDON & SAN FRANCISCO (June 10, 2010) - SEGA(R) Europe Ltd. and SEGA(R) of America, Inc. today announced plans to bring classic titles from its popular Dreamcast™ console to Xbox LIVE Arcade for the Xbox 360(R) video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, and PlayStation(R)Network later this year. Sonic Adventure™ and Crazy Taxi™ will be the first two classics made available, with Sonic leading the pack in Fall 2010 for the 11th anniversary of the launch of the Dreamcast in the United States.
Each game is based on the original Dreamcast incarnation, featuring all of the gameplay that older players fell in love with, whilst allowing a new audience to discover it for the very first time. The games incorporate all-new enhancements and features such as high resolution visuals and surround sound. Online leader boards are now implemented, allowing players to compare their skills with friends across the world! In addition to this, all-new Achievement and Trophy integration will be available for each game released.
Launched on September 9, 1999, the SEGA Dreamcast is one of the most beloved and critically acclaimed consoles of all time. Featuring a software library of over 650 titles, the system was widely hailed as being ahead of its time, and was the first to introduce online console gaming, with Internet support for games through a built in modem.
"The Dreamcast is fondly remembered by a large community of dedicated fans as a console that was ahead of its time in terms of graphics, quality and online gaming" commented Haruki Satomi, VP of Digital Business at SEGA of America and SEGA Europe. "There are few things that are more requested from us than making Dreamcast classics available for download in today's digital market place. We're very excited to begin offering gamers our beloved Dreamcast titles again on the current console systems."
Sonic Adventure will be available for download in Fall 2010. Both Sonic Adventure and Crazy Taxi will be on display at SEGA's booth (#2023) at this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo.

Ah, now I can relive the days of driving like a maniac with nothing but The Offspring in the background
@anudewalrus
Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah!!!!! Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah!!!!! Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah!!!!! Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah!!!!! Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah!!!!! Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah!!!!! - The Offspring.
Wow, that's all I remember now...
@anudewalrus Do a CRAZZYYYYYY Drift!
Crazy Taxi never gets old.
@PhaseDMA
play it again, it gets old fast.
@Killing Time Agreed that game ruled. My favorite was Sega Bass Fishing with that fishing rod controller. Ahhh yeah!
@PhaseDMA
I forgot about that game... my friend had a Dreamcast it was pretty cool!
Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah!!!!! Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah!!!!! Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah!!!!! Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah!!!!! Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah Yeah!!!!!
I remember the days I had Crazy Taxi 2... Wasn't that much fun. lol
Didn't they make Crazy Taxi for the PS2 and Gamecube?
@APV and the PC and PSP.
@APV It's on the Cube, my friend has a copy. Fun.
I think sonic adventure was awesome. I don't know why people didn't buy dreamcast I think it was an awesome system bought it day one 9/9/99. I chose to buy it instead of final fantasy 8 which released the same day to keep people from buying dreamast lol
@cell128
If I remember right it got buried under the Sony PR machine. It came out what, a year or so before the PS2? I remember seeing a lot of ads for it even before it was released.
@cell128 piracy played a part. games could be burned to normal CD's with Nero and played with no software or hardware mods to the DreamCast. Piratable out of the box. Even Emulators and homebrew.
Tho I only found out long ofter its demise
Please bring back space Chanel 5
@POOH
one of my favorites was jet set radio. Best soundtrack ever!!! super awesome gameplay!!! Please please bring it back sega!!!!!!!
@cell128 Jet Set Radio got an Xbox sequel... I own it, plays fine on my Xbox 360. You should raid your local Gamestop's used games section. I paid about $1.
@cell128 I like let set radio to that was a great game and they need to bring back power stone
I'd get Crazy Taxi. College Football 2k series is what I'd really want though.
Loved the Dreamcast. So many fun games.
Jet Grind Radio better be revived.
Jet Set Radio.
FTMFW
Unless the graphics are more than "slightly" updated these will look outrageously outdated, they'd better not be anywhere near "full" price.
@d0mth0ma5 Hardly, the graphics on some of the Dreamcast games were about equal to PS2 and Xbox. Sony still sells PS2...
@tosvus
I agree. The graphics were really good. Especially Shenmue & Shenmue 2! They looked amazing for the time!
@pcwzrd13 FF7 looked amazing for it's time, but I wouldn't pay full price now. I have paid cut price for it on the PSP though.
If they necro Jet Grind Radio, that will be the final motivation i need to finally get a ps3. Make it happen!!!
I still don't understand the purpose of the alt.engadget site...
@loocas
Yeah I don't get it either. All the alt posts seem to show up on the normal site anyway so I don't get why it's a separate site.
@jlarex "All the alt post" does not appear on the main page, the pictures and some text do. I like it.
No, I mean the "philosophy" behind the "alt". These news could very well be the "main" news and some of the "main" news seem more suitable for the "alt" news. I don't get the sorting mechanism...
Hey hey hey! Let's play some Crazy Taxi!
@Fortygig
Shhhh! It's thinking!
Shenmue !!
@N0c7urn3
Yes please!
@N0c7urn3
Yes, I completely missed out on Shenmue in the past. They should bring it back.
@N0c7urn3 Seems like a good platform for a Shenmue 3. If 100% of the profits from downloading the first two go to making the third, I'd download them even though I already own them.
Am I crazy for wanting it to use the same old engine, emulated running in 1080p. At least it would cost them less to make since they have all the old assets.
I still play on my Dreamcast, got about 50 games! :)
@tosvus
Yeah, me too. I just bought one last year but I have about 30 games now. I love it!
I'm glad to see it's the first Crazy Taxi as I think that was the best one. I'm not sure I'll buy it, since I still have my Dreamcast and a copy of the game. However, some cleaner graphics, online leaderboards, and achievements might persuade me.
Hopefully they re-release some more really good Dreamcast titles though. How about Chu Chu Rocket, with online play. Although I have the game I NEVER got a chance to play it online (only local 4 player matches).
Power Stone, or it didn't happen.
Jet Grind Radioooo
Power Stone!!!!!
I'm still pissed that CT3 wasn't made BC on the 360. Loved that damn game
san francisco rush 2049
there's nothing better than blowing up your friends with a rocket strapped to your roof in 4-player split screen
@nerd
Yes! Rush 2049 is fantastic!
Hopefully other studios will re-release their content at some point too. For some reason, I suddenly got the urge to play Super Magnetic Neo.
Sonic Adventure was and still is the best 3D sonic game out there. Personally, better than SA2. I still have my dreamcast. It's set up and everything.
Games I still play
MvC2
Power stone 1 & 2
Toy Commander was a great 4 player game. I played hours with that game, hunting my buddies while finding the best toy to destroy them with.
But I'll vote with Powerstone or Skies of Arcadia. Get a damn sequel already!
Only problem with Powerstone is that it's Capcom. Not Sega, Unless Sega has already been talking to Capcom about it. Wouldn't mind some of the other Capcom staples from DC days either. Like Tech Romancer!
