Mysterious Motorola Droid X coming to Verizon?
The gang at Phandroid have got their hands on pics alleging to be Verizon internal documentation that details an up-and-coming handset called the Droid X. Honestly, this sounds like it could still be an internal name to us, although there has been some speculation that the handset is, in fact, the launch name of the Motorola Shadow / Xtreme that would be accompanying the Droid 2 for a Summer launch. Moving on down the line, this thing purportedly has a 4.3-inch display and Safari 4.0 for the browser. While Android's browser is also WebKit-based, we're calling shenanigans on any info that says this phone (if it exists) is shipping with Safari. More info to fuel your rich fantasy life after the break.

Is this the motorola phone thats finally going to have a 1GHZ processor? No? Oh ok...
@CJisohsocool
I think you mean SnapDragon when say 1ghz, you are wrong, the processor that is inside Droid X is much better than SnapDragon and has better GPU and all.
@CJisohsocool
Ah, the frequency wars have begun. Another few years of trying to explain to people why clock cycles are important, but so are so many other aspects of the processor design.
Processor X @ 1ghz is not necessarily more powerful than Processor Y @ 800 mhz.
That being said, I think we have to wait for proper benchmarks to compare the two platforms.
But, hey, if you'd like I have a 4 year old Intel CPU running at almost 4 Ghz. So much faster than any of that new crap on the market today...
@CJisohsocool
Somebody who used the device (on HowardForums) viewed the device info and it said that the processor was running at 1 GHz.
@defunctgod
Is your CPU happened to be an Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Duo E8400 @3 Ghz overclocked to 4 Ghz?
Can someone like break this down for me...
Cuz its really starting to get confusing how many android phones verizon has coming...
Is this "X" also known as the "Shadow". More importantly is the Shadow just a droid without a keyboard?
Then there's the Droid 2...is it the same as this A## that engadget keeps bringing up. Its kinda hard to keep all these phones in line.
@BrookLynnsFinest The Shadow/Xtreme/X is the phone that was found in the gym. It clearly exists. It's spec'd like a beast and has a big screen.
The Droid 2 is a refreshed Droid, it's barely better, a little different looking, and we saw pictures of it yesterday.
Both phones exist. Both phones use the Android *webkit* browser (which is where the Safari typo confusion must be coming from), and both are coming this summer.
Droid AKA the most fragmented phone in history.
@qmartman711
not in software, the fact that there's like 5 of them in less than a year
@paulodourado Droid and android aren't the same thing. Droid is the rebranding of some android phones done by Verizon. The only Droids currently available are the original Motorola one, the Eris, and the incredible.
@paulodourado OMG... 5 phones with an operating system in a year??? That's crazy talk! Anyone that wants android should have to commit to the same form factor and performance level as anyone else with that operating system... you know, so that they can express their individuality.
Anywho, I don't believe the 4.3" screen or safari... the resolution is 480x854, the same as the droid, I'd be willing to bet that it has a 3.7" screen
@TMoney2007 sorry troll. bait not took.
@paulodourado Three. The phones are only related by the Droid branding, which is Verizon's doing, not the manufacturers. This has nothing to do with the "fragmenting" buzzword that you clearly don't understand.
@TMoney2007 Yeah, but look at the size of the phone - 5.01" long - it probably does have a 4.3" display screen. Maybe - but then it's only speculation.
@paulodourado
Man, I totally agree 110% I HATE having choices and being forced to make decisions. My mind can't take that sort of stress.
I want every day to be the same, predictable slop!
@ofcmad 5" is only 3/8" longer than my droid... but we'll see. Some of these stats may just be placeholders.
@TMoney2007
The screen on the EVO is 4.3 inches and it only runs at 800x480, which is the same resolution as the Incredible on it's 3.7 inches (and every other HTC Android phone, all of which are 3.7 inches). Not sure why this phone can't have the same resolution as the Droid on a larger screen. The 4.3 inch screen is basically the most certain spec to have been leaked about this device at HoFo.
@paulodourado Android's a platform, not a phone, and it's no more fragmented than Windows.
@TMoney2007
Def bigger than 3.7". Maybe it's 4", 4.1", or 4.3" but its def bigger. And that resolution is almost the exact same resolution as the EVO.

@taylorh
The browser is WebKit-based so maybe it just auto-detected it as Safari or something.
Is still not match with other carrier top phone (Iphone 4, Evo and Galaxy S)
@techlord
Yeah... you'd be wrong about that. There were posts on all the Android blogs a couple of weeks ago that showed some recent benchmarking results compared against "others" who had recently completed the benchmark. Top spot went to the Nexus One running 2.2. Number 2 was not the EVO (Snapdrago) or the Galaxy S (Cortex-A8) -- it was the Shadow (i.e., the Droid X -- there really isn't any mystery about the association over at HowardForums...). This is a hella powerful phone.
Otherwise, the specs match every one of the phones you listed -- plus it is just as thin as the Galaxy S, but has a larger screen.
@techlord

Yea, is this the A955, Droid 2, Shadow, Extreme???
I want ONE of them, but there are so many names and fuzzy pics laying around that I can't choose.
Here's hoping they are released in a month to clear it all up.
@bimmerfreak0 the A955 is the Droid 2 and the shadow is the extreme, these are just two phones.
Will you just tell us already what you are releasing, Verizon!!!
Everyday its some weird leak or blurry picture and everyone gets to play "Guess what phone"
What i want you to do is give us some specs, release dates and make up your damn mind about what you want to call you phones.
Whats going to happen is you will tell us how awesome the future is going to be and then release Verizon Droid Turdorama.
My contract is up and I'm ready for a new phone - give me the freakin juice!
Unless these less than stellar spec'd phones are almost free and are available with a cheaper service plan, I just don't see the appeal.
@FriarNurgle
Man, you are hard to please! From Phandroid/HowardForums:
- TI OMAP 3630 + PowerVR SGX530 GPU that outperforms Snapdragon and Cortex-A8 (think: Apple A4)
- 4.3 inch, 854x480 display
- Front facing cam
- 8MP dual LED flash camera
- HDMI-out
- 720p recording
For performance vs. Galaxy S and Snapdragon:

no thanks I'm happy with my N97 mini
c'mon guys choice can be a good thing. Just because us uber-nerds aren't excited doesn't mean John Q. Public won't like it.
Chance of this phone shipping with safari: -1%.
Android browser is based on WebKit, it's pretty much the same browser.
Mysterious you say?
Ah, the Droid 10. Is it that time already?
Or is this some kind of MegaMan X thing?
I care, and so do a lot of others. Any other questions?
DROOOOOOOOOID!
Wow! What a sexy looking device. Is that an AMOLED screen? Hard to tell from the pics.
Lol...Verizon's iPhone? X? Seriously?
This is the fastest andriod 2.1 yet, bet the Samsung Galaxy S!!!
Wonder if it using 2.2......
I have huge dislike for the Droid branding on verizon. It seems to confuse everyone I talk to... Look Moto should have the Driod name, since whenever I say "Droid Incredible" or "Droid Eris" someone says "Oh that motorola verizon phone?". Eris & Incredible are from HTC! Droid is the branding, and Moto Droid is the Motorola phone. Sheesh.
That said, now I'm confused as to what these are?! Which is which... Engadget, care to do a split screen style post showing all the info for one phone on one side in a list, and the same for the other in another list? That would be helpful! Then I may know what I'm talking about with these new Moto phones. :)
@DefusedHero The only thing confusing about the Droid brand is that the Eris is one of them.
The Droid branding is given to powerful Android phones. It's a way to let people know the phones are running Google, they're top of the line and they're a big deal.
Verizon's Droid marketing is great and they've given Android status and power, something T-Mobile, Sprint, and now AT&T, didn't accomplish.
No one understood what Android phones were. People get what Droids are. And frankly, it's cooler to have a Droid than a Samsung Moment or Backflip.
It's all about perception, it's all about marketing, it's all about the message. It's the smartest thing Android has done so far. Props to Verizon.
@JONNNathannn
I completely get that it helped android from a marketing standpoint, but then again you have to think of how it confuses consumers. With that said, the best advertising is clarity and mass appeal. Verizon is capitalizing on the thought of Android without being clear about where the products come from. Simple solution: HTC Driod Eris, or HTC Droid Incredible.
See what I'm saying?
Motorola was the first to be branded that way, so the phone really should stick to the Droid surname. Moto Droid, because that is it's mass appeal name. (yes i realize it does have a technical name as well ... A*** I dont know beyond that)
@DefusedHero Well, they do name them Droid by Motorola or Droid Incredible by HTC.
Honestly, it doesn't matter if people can name who makes the Droid and who makes the Droid Incredible. It's all about the Droid name. This is no worse than people calling an iPod Touch the iTouch. You can see it in your head, you know what it is, and in most cases, you know you want it.
I can see what you're saying but I don't think it matters. We can disagree.
@DefusedHero
The only Droid phones currently available are the Motorola Droid, the HTC Droid Incredible and the HTC Droid Eris. The Eris doesn't even get advertised and the commercials mention the manufacturer as well. I don't understand what is difficult to understand.
This phone is the Moto Droid X, formerly the Shadow/Xtreme.
@ryan7723
I care and know ill buy it the day this comes out
Meanwhile, AT&T gets the iPhone with a crippled data plan and not much else.
Navigation Key
Qwerty
Does that mean this comes with a hardware qwerty? If so, then does that mean it is not the Motorola Shadow/Xtreme? Since the Motorola Shadow/Xtreme does not have a hardware qwerty. Or does Navigation key mean soft qwerty?
I just wanna know more about this Exxon phone....
@benz240
Have not heard much about the Exxon phone except that you can stuff a bunch of them down a oil pipe to plug it up
@jhunter9918 sounds like a piece of junk then...
