With the big E3 Expo set to kick off in just four days, we must admit to being more than a little intrigued at finding a new PS3 model bumble its way out of the FCC test labs. PlayStation 3 models CECH-2501A and CECH-2501B are both certified for 802.11b/g WiFi and Bluetooth 2.0+EDR differing only in hard disk drive configurations. We're also seeing a pair of PS3 DECH-2500A and DECH-S2500A debugging stations -- interesting since a debug unit is typically only required when there's been a change in the chips on the motherboard. Feel free to speculate as we prepare for E3 to kick off on June 15th.
If they randomly put PS2 emulation back in, there will be so many pissed people.
@ChuckBartowski Holy crap.... that would totally crush me! I'm tearing up just thinking about how much that would suck!
@tenaciouswho
why would that be bad?
@ChuckBartowski
Because there would be a bunch of people who bought PS3's never expecting it to come back. It was a launch console thing, and then after everyone finally gets a PS3, a huge new feature is added. i would be mad.
@ChuckBartowski
What if they gave old PS3s like yours a software update, best of both worlds!
@ChuckBartowski
Software update would not give it PS2 support. It requires hardware.
@ChuckBartowski It requires hardware to guarantee 100% compatibility. A software update could allow PS2 games to run on an emulator; highly unlikely.
I just bought a 640 gb 2.5" 5400 rpm hard drive for 65 bucks shipped from newegg. Memory is getting cheaper every second. Hopefully sony won't be charging more than 50 bucks for an extra 100 gigs of hard drive space.
@aznsensation did a fw update give access to hard drives above 500? last i knew it could only tell you you had 500GB HD no matter what size you put in. i could be wrong though.
PS3 ^_^
alright. this, i am definitely getting.
Yeah, I'll go with them being Disco Stick bundles.
No linux support sucks.......
@EA575 What leaks? Everything that's come out was intended to come out before E3. Killzone 3 was leaked but only a few days before its official announcement. Motorstorm was officially announced yesterday. Littlebigplanet 2 was officially announced. None of these were leaks.
@EA575 Because they would have it leaked otherwise! Can't beat them join them as the saying goes.
My guess is that this is just a bundle with the motion controllers, maybe a game included. If a new model is released, maybe it will be more energy efficient, but that is about it.
@strife305 - Bundles get different packaging skews, but the model # of the system in the bundle will be the same as all other current models. It could be something as minor as a change w/ the shielding/cooling system inside. ANY design change requires re-testing by the FCC to verify any interference from the device is within acceptable limits.
@xnonsuchx - Duh! Must be bedtime...SKUs! ;-)
I imagine its a Move Bundle with some different chips. I wish the FCC would leak some 360 models. The ppowerblock needs to go, it needs wifi built in, it needs blu ray, it needs not to overheat and fail 30% of the time. Has any other electronic product had the failure rate that MS has and not done very little to fix it beside extended warranties. I been holding off on a 360 till it gains more of these features. If they don't add these features they need to cut the price on the elite. At least with the PS3 you get blu ray and wifi.
@taoprophet420
yes. It was sony's first product. A toaster that sparked a lot and caught fire regularly. People were originally afraid to use sony products.
I'm hoping for ps2 compatability.
@taoprophet420 It will never get blu-ray....and my guess is that brick will stay external....
@rojar19
Sony won't offer PS2 compatiblity again. Why? Because they are ass holes.
@jellotime91 - No, because assholes will complain about it either way...only ~15-20% of prospective buyers really cared much about PS2-compatibility, so if they put it back in and jacked the price up $30-50, more people would complain about that than complain about not having it.
What they SHOULD have done from the start (and COULD have done again w/ the first slim model) is try to come up w/ a PS2-compatibility card that goes in a special slot and then make it a ~$50 optional add-on.
Whatever it is, Sony requested both external and internal pictures of it (as well as the manual) be kept confidential by the FCC until 12/7/2010. Hmmm...that date sounds familar! ;-)
It's still the same size (290mm x 290mm x 65mm), so it seems unlikely the case has changed externally at all (maybe putting 4 USB ports and flash card readers back on???).
Original slim to smaller chips slim went from CECH-2001x to CECH-2101x...a jump to CECH-2501x seems like it could imply a bigger difference.
Looks like I'm going to wait before I purchase a new ps3.
@EA575
Why not 'leak' them in the days leading up to E3?
The games then get additional coverage, and if they were just announced during E3 they would see a reduced coverage amount because of all the other things going on.
Man, I hope a cheaper price maybe, my 60 gig is starting to go, need a new skinny one :)
What happened to the good old days of consoles, release one, 6 or 7 years later redesign it, then make the successor.. Why are there like 12 different models of PS3s.. This is annoying.
@jellotime91 There were 14 revisions of PS2 and 7 (I think) of the PS1 (plus two of the PSOne).
You just think it's different now because there are blogs reporting on all the new models and there weren't before.
This isn't too surprising, it's been difficult to find PS3s lately, so clearly there was a new model coming. It's probably a very minor change, probably not any functionality change, just internals.
The debug station is probably a unit used by developers, and the only difference is that the optical drive & system software allow for playing of burned discs that developers can create when prototyping their games. They also make them look different so that you don't mistake them for retail units.
YEY!!!! Finally the White and Silver PS3s are coming here in the US of A!!!
Well, I Think...
Bring back backwards compatibility with PS2 games!!! Please!!!
hmm model 2501
this model cech-2501a, might be new gpu upgrade from gf7800gtx to gf8800gtx since may 2010 cech-2101a is a lower gpu 40nm and certified wifi, bluetooth so this third slim might for 3d and gpu upgrade so called ps3.5 And for mystery debugging station dech-2500a and dech-s2500a it could be the prototype ps4 with the same specs of model cech-2501a with a Fermi Gpu gf480 or something that Nvidia has secret working on so stay tune to e3 2010! And i heard that Wii2 or Hi-Fi will previewing at e3. SO i think microsoft has quit making console thier work shift to software developing for Windows 8 Full speed mode. Reason why Nvidia taken over all gpu wafer fabrication. Nvidia buys out competition, so Amd can't innovate.
