Nokia completes its N8 video tour with media player and HDMI demo
You've seen parts uno and due already no doubt, so let's dive straight into the third and final installment of Nokia's N8 overview. Today we are treated to the Symbian^3 media player, which continues to closely resemble Apple's Cover Flow, but we're sure the companies will work it out between themselves. That cover-centric interface gets tugged around a few times to show the phone can handle it without lag, and we also get to see a repeat visit from our friend Mr. Long Press, which functions as a mobile version of a right-click by popping up a menu of contextual options. The video continues into a look at the HDMI connectivity and points out that the N8 will be compatible with Bluetooth keyboards -- you know, if you're in the mood for an Espoo-approved version of Google TV. See the whole thing after the break.

Pretty snappy phone
i'll wait for part 4 of 3 to give final judgement
I'm pretty impressed with nokia's work.
It's still consider cheap for the highest end.
@bob e I m still looking for my next phone, using a 3GS right now (good but not good as a phone more like an apps launcher). I'm interested in this Nokia N8 but I can't find anywhere if u can customize a physical key to launch the dialer, and if it'll have smartdial, good reception, call recording, voice to text, calls log with exact time stamp.
The evo is great but focus on serch maps navigation.
Right now I have on my list of best touchscreen smartphone for use primary as a phone : palm pre plus / pre 2, blackberry Bold slider, htc hd2(green/red keys for the dialer I presume and keys are customizable), Dell lightning, Nokia N8 (if all the functions I ve mentioned before are available).
I like the N8 features (USB OTG, long press for contextual menu, picture/video quality etc. ). Symbian^3 seems fast and the device looks great.
@NextGen
I am really impressed with the speed of the device. Its much faster than the proto's we have seen so far. They promised 60 fps and responsiveness, seems they are coming through. About your points, I think the N8 has them all, but I am not sure about speech to text. You might need to get an app for that.
@JFH The Vlingo app should be fine for speech to text.
@JFH @Gery cool. Thanks for the infos. It really helps. I'm sure (hope) the SQ will be on par with the 3GS or cowon and Sony DAP. Hope for an app for engadget and Good battery life.
Bluetooth FTP and OPP On the N8 is a good plus too.
@NextGen
Well, given that it's a Nokia, it's a sure bet that it will have good reception and I already have an app for my 5800 that can record calls. The other things, you'll have to wait and see, but I don't doubt that it will be a great phone.
I'll reserve judgment until it's actually out and reviewed by the community.
@NextGen
Nokia media phones have ok SQ, I think its about the same as the iPhone. It will never get close to the sound and customizability of a sony or especially cowon DAP.
@NextGen Have a look at the upcoming u8500 based models. Looks impressive so far.
@fast Yes very impressive indeed.
@tirim4 I agree with u about the sound customization. If the N8 SQ is on par with the 3GS's, It's ok. I read on head-fi that the 3GS SQ is one of the best among smartphones.
@bob e But the UI is damn ugly...it's straight out of the '90s.
@Paul Elmy These phones aren't cheap and they aren't high end - that is what gets me. It still looks like the clunky Symbian UI that plagued my N97.
The n8 has less memory, and a slower CPU but costs as much as a Nexus One or an iPhone 4. Oh and it has a lower resolution screen. If your a Symbian freak (I think I cured myself of that finally) great buy one, if not - who buys these?

They are cheap. its gonna be about $450-$480 at launch. It is high-end. A phone that cheap doesn't give you 12MP CARL ZEISS Camera with 720p. neither would it give you (REAL) bluetooth 3.0, nice user interface (trust me, they've improved it ALOT since n97), HDMI out, Dolby Surround Sound 5.1, FLASH!!! and SO many other things. The N8 has a 680 MHz, lesser than 1GHz and I agree. BUT, Symbian is a VERY light OS and unlike iOS or Android, it needs much lesser power to operate. it has a standard resolution screen, not lower. its the same as Nexus one (Just because Apple came up with their So-Called "retina display" doesnt mean all other phones are crap, Apple fanboy) Plus, neither Nexus one or iPhone can do HDMI out. and lemme tell you, the resolution of the OS on your HDTV doesnt stay 640x480, it scales and its resolution turns HD!
@Angelworks
Well you obviously have no idea of what this device can do, or the fundamental changes that have been made to the OS or UI. The fact that the icons look recognizable is a good thing, but you can change all of that if you do not like it. Bang for Buck this device is currently without equal. And stop the whining about the CPU now, the whole music player and photo and video gallery was as smooth as it gets which such an "old" processor. In fact, that means that you get similar or better performance (real 60 fps) and much better battery life...
@Angelworks
"These phones aren't cheap and they aren't high end"
What is high end? But N8 isn't Nokias highest end, it's higher end, but there's room for at least one higher end phone.
"The n8 has less memory, and a slower CPU but costs as much as a Nexus One or an iPhone 4."
I'm pretty sure there's no way to get iPhone under 500$ for couple of years at least. And why put higher clocked CPU to eat battery when 680MHz is the sweet spot with the GPU anyway? Symbian is built to be mobile OS from the beginning so 256MB RAM is more than enough.
"Oh and it has a lower resolution screen."
For some reason 2 weeks ago iPhone 3gs' much lesser screen was good enough for almost anyone. Now when Apple had to exactly double the resolution (do you think they would have done it if it wasn't "convenient" to upscale old apps exactly 2x) it's suddenly the milestone everything else is compared?
PPI for most of the new phones is between 200 and 300PPI which is enough for distance between screen and eyes on normal mobile phone use scenario.
Nice, Nokias really up'd there game with this one!
@JustThatNerdyGuy I agree with you, But I don't think that this a phone to buy, how do you set a image as your icon (Sorry I don't know what you call it).
@JustThatNerdyGuy And nice thing for po-folk like myself, it dropped the price of a new unlocked X6 to $207 (see slickdeals front page).
That'll tide me over until I can pick up a used EVO on the cheap. =)
@THEGODOFAPPLE Click this http://www.engadget.com/profile/4162506/ Now you see a blue url "Edit Picture" click it. I am sure you know the rest.
For anyone else, visit your own profile to do the same.
@JustThatNerdyGuy Am I going crazy or did I see screen tearing? This doesn't seem to happen on Samsung snappy phones, but seems to happen to the very first Nokia Symbian Snappy Phone...
They need to enable vsync...
@Shinigami You're not quite going crazy, but you are mistaking tearing in the video itself with tearing on the devices screen. Note that the presenters fingers tear too, which proves it.
awsome phone, lame presentation!
@Gutsy Gibbons awsome = for that retail price nothing comes close in features!
@Gutsy Gibbons
Was a price announced? Wouldn't mind picking up an unlocked one in the future to replace my wife's E63.
@Gutsy Gibbons
Agreed, a bit weak presenting skills for a senior product manager. Wonder what the meeting rooms are like...
@blindguymcsqueezy It’s astonishingly low N8 price of 370 EUR. Suddenly Nokia N8 does NOT!! competes with the high end flagships, but with the likes of HTC Legend, Acer Liquid, Samsung Wave or Sony Ericsson Vivaz. And leaves most of the competitors scrambling to catch up. So plz before posting comments it's no match against Iphone4 and such high priced phones plz note take the different price ranges and you'll realize it's really comparing apples vs oranges.
@Gutsy Gibbons Please note that the mentioned price of about 350 euros is before taxes.
@Gery
It's also unsubsidized price. 350€ could actually be the price point you could get it after a month in the shops.
This looks like WinMo6 in some respects
@olly88
Regardless of how it looks, I'm not buying. Nokia almost got me with the n97 from it's potential, I took a chance on the n900 based on promises or assurances and both times they've disappointed me. It'll be a very long time before I touch a Nokia again.
It is a little ugly. IMHO.
@LockStock666 that's what I was thinking too!
I have Nokia 5800 and like it and would like to get the N8 too, but when I see the UI of iPhone, than I am thinking, why Nokia doesn't make a better UI design? IMHO the device is already a better device compared to iPhone4 .
@Gohlool
Most new devices are better than the iPhone 4 hardware wise, but you can not neglect the superiority of the OS and the appstore. I think for the majority, this is what wins them over hands-on.
@Almo
Symbian as OS is superior to iOS, Avkon UI is inferior to iOS UI.
@Gohlool iPhone4 is hardly a hardware benchmark, so thats not saying much. They do have a nice UI though.
@Almo
what's up with this hardware stuff? Like you know hardware.
@LockStock666
ahh, I have finally found my nemesis. The anti-lockstock
@Suomaa We all know it's light years behind iOS and that fact is reflected in its sales figure. Don't you android fanboi's have nothin better to do??
@hellhound
Lol, did he say Android? This guy really knows his way around with manufacturers and their OSs.
@hellhound and we all know that your reply is lightyears away from @Suomaa's comment.. dude, Symbian vs iOS! where did the android fanboy comment come from?
@Gohlool try SPB mobile shell .. honestly it will completely transform your 5800 .. I'm using it on my Satio .. multiple homescreens .. check it out http://spb.com/symbian-software/mobileshell/ free trial etc etc ..
I totally want to hook my mobile to my TV. Totally.
@AceMcLoud
It's not just a phone. It's a digital camera and a digital camcorder. Both of these gadgets have traditionally come with TV-out.
@AceMcLoud
I do when I've acquired videos from teh intarwebs.
...
No, not those kind of videos.
...
Mostly.
How can it be legal to rip off Apple`s coverflow?? And the presentation is beyond lame..this guy makes me go do number 2 in the toilet :D
@malus Because Apple didn't invent cover flow, in fact Apple ripped it off from Suns looking glass java desktop.
@MrLinux .. You are completely wrong.
Coverflow was purchased from a shareware app of the same name that was available on the Mac around 2008. Where that developer got the inspiration no one will ever know. But 3D visualisation like that was hardly invented by Sun.
@taligent
So you are saying he is correct in stating Nokia did not rip off Apple, but rather both had an earlier source where they got their inspiration from? Well that settles that then.
