Hacker cons HTC Touch Pro 2 into providing multitouch, other WinMo devices too (video)
Never, ever doubt the skill and determination of the guys over at xda-developers, capable of cracking any device and bringing you fresh ROMs to brighten up your stuffy gadgets. This latest bit of wunder-code isn't a full new image, rather a tiny WinMo app that does something magical: enables multitouch on single-touch resistive screens. How? Sadly developer OndraSter isn't saying just yet, but it relies on leaving one finger in place and moving the other, so perhaps it detects a jump in touch position and treats it as a pinch gesture. In the videos below it's shown working in Opera, but should work anywhere, and while the developer filmed these on an HTC Touch Pro 2 he says this will work on just about any WinMo 6 or 6.1 device. The app has sadly not been released to the wild just yet, but we hope OndraSter drops some binaries soon before he starts a riot among Windows Mobile users with more than one finger. [Thanks, Wes]

@fadishehadeh
Sweetie, what kind of processor do you think the HTC HD2 uses?
My tp2 comes back to life, IT LIVEs
Uhm just a friendly heads up... did you forget you reported on this back in April?
http://i.engadget.com/2010/04/20/resistive-htc-devices-can-have-pseudo-multitouch-too/
Yeah, this is stupidly old. Like, stupidly.
All I can see is how slow is the Windows phone OS... horrible...
@Keanedi
its on a 720mhz qualcomm
@Oldarney Uh, no, TP2 is on a ~520Mhz processor.
I love windows mobile
Hey guys,
yes, it works on that basis that one finger works as anchor, there is no other way.
What is different compared to all other on first sight same projects - this works in opposite way - normally you have to make a program on top of that SDK or so, but this allows using it in other applications, that weren't built on top of that. So you can use it in Opera. So no, this isn't "stupidly old" at all.
I only wish, there was some unified system for this. Opera uses different way than HTC Album, the same for changing font size in tmail etc.
Oh and there is some pre-alpha-maybe-lower binary posted on XDA forums :).
hey if you wanna impress me get xandroid to get sound on my sprint touch pro2. i hate wm now and android on the tp2 will hold me off until a 1gz android phone with a keyboard comes out for SPRINT.
@summerboy18
And you have to pay for GPS, Running android on it is a pain, you have no keyboard (offset keyboard ftw), your locked to At&t (unless you do hacky things), you dont have remote desktop (free), microsoft office (free) or skyfire (free). Oh and I get unlimited 3g.
ewwww lag... and that song ain't gettin NOBODY and kind of vagina at all!
i think the zoom sliding bar on the tp2 is better, becuase it means you can zoom in using only the hand you are holding the phone in, instead of having to use a second hand. i dont see the point of pinch to zoom on a phone.
Or you could just get an iPhone and be done with it
Why hackers always have the crappiest camera?!
@cjori
sorry, it was recorded a bit before midnight and I have only two hands - one for holding camera and 2nd for touching... I mean touching the phone!
@OndraSter LOL, I was just kidding, that's fine, you rock for making this device multi-touch enabled.
Shocking to find out WinMo 6 didn't have this already
Too bad Win Mo is so horrible on the TP2. Used it for a while and nearly puked.
Doesn't matter. The platform is dead. DEAD! RIP WinMo 6.0,6.1,6.5 ...
Using an N1 now. The digitizer on my Fuze died but my Tilt still boots. I keep it close by in case I need a MiFi hotspot or turn by turn navigation via Garmin to one of my 400 favorites. Seems that Android or iOS can't do either one of these for me yet. OMG! How did M$ blow a 5 year lead in PPC tech?
Too funny...
what about WinMo 6.5 Pro?? so far as I know, many devices like htc touch pro2 has been up grade to 6.5 rather than 6.1
i'd prefer they revolutionize single-touch navigation on a phone....
with high pixel density screens becoming available, i'd like to see smaller phones. And multi-touch will become a chore on these smaller phones.
speaking of single-touch... what happened to First Else?
These XDA guys do such excellent work yet...why oh why doesnt anyone know how to use a camera? No one knows how to focus.. nobody knows what a tripod is?
I mean really.. you would have your licence revoked if you operated a car the way MOST of these cameras are operated. Grrrr...
Opps! I just farted!
ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ
pitch it is constrained to vertical... as you can see from video..
and pan is constrained to horizontal....
also pitch means to move both of your fingers...
is a trick... resistive could read 2 touches, but it reads as one in the center of them...
here is a better implementation of an alternative to multi-touch in this app (from second 30): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DCI11RBSUlo
@summerboy18 Haha. Sucks to be an iPhone user. My Android phone supports multi-tasking out of the box. You need to hack and do all sorts of crazy things just to have multi-tasking? Pathetic.
