Xbox 360 Slim outed by Italian ad?
Of the rumored devices we've been looking forward to getting official at E3 this year, two of the biggest come from Microsoft -- both of which, sadly, seem to have escaped from their bag a little early. First is Kinect, the re-naming of "Project Natal," and now it's looking like the rumored Xbox 360 Slim has been leaked early as well. An Italian site, Console Tribe, ran an ad (embedded after the break) showing the above rather more angular looking console that's definitely an Xbox 360, but definitely not a current model. It mentions that this model is compatible with the Kinect and also invites you to "live today." We're thinking this model was not supposed to go live until tomorrow, but seizing an extra day doesn't sound so bad for us.

Looks shopped
@Stevenk
Look how long the disc drive is.
@Stevenk
Looks like an Alienware PC.
@uckApple I was thinking the same thing
@Stevenk
I agree but since it mentions Kinect (which was just leaked), I would assume it's real. Either that or somebody whipped up this video extremely fast!
@Stevenk am i the only one that realized that the thing says it comes with wifi 0_o .......sweet its about time
@Stevenk
Unless it's going to have a blu-ray player, it's pointless
@Stevenk Yeah, I agree it does look long. Then again there is nothing to compare it to on the advert, so it's kind of hard to judge sizes. It may just be a shorter system (standing up).
@Stevenk
In case anyone's interested. Here's the translation:
Live Today. Ready for the future technology of tomorrow. Presenting the new Xbox 360. 250GB hard drive. Built-in Wi-Fi function. Compatible with Kinect.
@Stevenk
Looks like a black Nintendo Wii?? Oh, yeah, .. photoshopped..
I hope it doesn't make noise like the current one.
@Stevenk
looks hideous! not tastefully designed at all
@Ross McLean
Judging from the DVD-tray it's about the same hight as the old X-box, and maube 2cm (4/5" of an inch) slimmer
@Stevenk
yay... with a slimmer form factor comes...more hardware failure?
@Stevenk
Looks like an ugly original XBox....what is MS thinking?
And as for Natal whats with the spelling?
Kinetic? Is that how its supposed to be pronounced...
@BrookLynnsFinest Kinect, like Connect.
@Tiptup300
Has to be long since the xbox 360 slim (which won't be it's name) will be smaller but the drive will not therefore obviously making it look big although it's not.
@Plazmic Flame Disagree, solving RROD is far from pointless. I'm not saying this will solve it, I actually would think it'd be more prone to it, but RROD is the biggest issue to the Xbox not missing blu-ray. Adding BR is actually a negative for me as it'll add costs to a device that would duplicate functionality. Also, someone mentioned wireless, wireless is a much cheaper for MS to put in there at no additional cost the customer.
@BrookLynnsFinest
Kinect, connect, kinetic, get the idea?
@Plazmic Flame Don't you believe in streaming on-demand content is the future? I think pretty much anyone in the business has said that by now. So, when Blu-Ray is as relevant as DVD I bet this system will still be alive and kicking, and playing hi-def movies over HDMI. Problem?
@pcwzrd13
Thank you was about to do some Engadget bashing ofr missing the Wifi thing :)
@Tiptup300 that'd be because the device itself is shorter (when stood on edge) than the current hardware.
@unknown714 lol ya i saw that and was "Wifi? hmm.."
@pcwzrd13
I thank you on giving us the exact translation unlike someone failed to do...JK
@Stevenk saw something about wifi
bout time they had built-in wifi
if they made it slot loaded then all the consoles would be up to date for my standard on which should be in them
@manofchao5 Technically this looks possible. Ben Heck got ahold of the rumored "Slim" 360 board a while back and it looks like this could be it in living form. Here's a link if anyone would like to read it
http://www.joystiq.com/2010/03/18/ben-heck-ponders-xbox-360-slim-motherboard-memory-unit-support/
@unknown714 yeah, i don't know what this xbox is going to come with, but by the time you spend all your money on the system, the wifi adapter, xbox live, rechargable controllers, etc, you have surpassed the cost of a ps3 with the same features. its about time Microsoft included something with the xbox.
@Tiptup300 thats probally because its short, the disc drive looks long
@nicholasphan
And yet it still looks better than the current models. If I had some cash I would definitely purchase one.
@drkow19 Everyone says HD streaming is the future, but I do not believe that. HD streaming is not in the present or near future, in order for HD/BD Quality streaming to gain major traction major infrastructure improvements would need to be made. 1. Until the majority of America gets FiOS+ speed, streaming would not be convenient because the time to download or the amount of buffering required. 2. TVs will need to come with Hard Drives or consumers will need something that Content Providers can deliver content to i.e. STBs from Cable companies, or gaming devices. 3. Convenience, like I mentioned above, streaming is all about convenience but presently owning a physical copy is better because you actually own it, are able to trade/sell it, don't have to worry about content providers revoking your "license". It's easier and cheaper to drive to your local video store/redbox and grab a movie then wait for a movie to buffer to completly download.
So in summary streaming is not the near future for gaming/BD quality HD movies because the infrastructure isn't there.
@Plazmic Flame physical disc is going to die soon. im all for cloud and digital distribution, look @ ipods, zune hd's stream music, OnLive, Steam, NetFlix stream, PSN, Xbox Live, Wii. They have all incorporated at least digital download to their platforms.
@Plazmic Flame asking for blu-ray is like asking an ipod for a cassette player built in. thats how old BR technology is now to us.
@Stevenk Looks uglier than the current version and not really "slim" either.
@Tiptup300
if they were to make the xbox smaller the disk drive would look longer. they cant make the width of the xbox slimmer cos no one would be able to connect their hard drives to the top of it so they can only slim it down by shortening the height.
Looks fake, possibly and probably is. If not, then the advertising company is in big trouble. Not for the spoiler, but for the fact that the overall writings are a collection of mistakes.
First the title: "Vivi Oggi. Pronta per il futuro la tecnologia del domani" means literally: "Live Today. Ready for the future (is) the technology of tomorrow" Which makes sense, if you're master Yoda. Otherwise is kind of a crap advertising message.
But another signal of the "fakeness" of the thing, or the level of current advertising companies in Italy, is in a previous frame where it says:
"funzione WIFI incorporato" literally: "Wifi function included"
Problem is that "function" in italian is feminine, therefore it should have been "incorporata" and not "incorporato". Therefore: either the advertisers are idiots (which might be absolutely true, if they managed to screw up not only the italian but the official Msoft announcement) or it's a fake by a bunch of illiterate teens who don't even know their own language.
@pcwzrd13
Exactly the advert says nothing about it being slim. Although it is fugly.
@Stevenk: Xbox 360 Slim? Seriously, I know hardware makers always make things slim, and if it isn't, sites that review hardware, and commenters like us will complain it's 1 mm thicker than the old one, but I really wish they would oust like this half-foot thick Xbox 360 with actual cooling capabilities. And better hardware inside.
@robokai
Errr no... most of the content on Zune is HD, a reasonable proportion of which is 1080p, which streams perfectly on my shitty ADSL line (which on a good day can do 17Mbit, but most of the time is
@roxxor
... to continue...
... but most of the time is
@Anacardo perhaps they meant the "incorporato" for the WiFi, since it's masculin. Also, you cannot judge the syntax of a phrase after translating it directly, especially from Romantic languages, since its structure is mostly completely different to Germanic languages, such as German and English. If you translate it to Spanish, it would be "Vive hoy. Preparado para la futura tecnología del mañana." It means: "Live today. Prepared for the future technology of tomorrow". Ah, Google Translator. Watch out.
Sony: "Thank god it's not us"
@Mateen110 They came out with something that Microsoft "Kinect" will forever remind me of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EyeToy:_Kinetic
@Mateen110
speaking of sony, do you think ms followed sony and put the power supply built in?
@Nimer55 Doubt it
@Mateen110 Microsoft: Thank god we don't have a controller that looks like a sex toy.
@Nimer55 Speaking of Sony do you think they followed Nintendo by putting the power supply inside the PS3.
Please stop with this following or copying crap.
Doesn't look much "slimmer".
@weirdFishes
How can people say that without any comparative references?
@protolink And the disk drive makes it look quite small, actually.
@weirdFishes
I agree, the current 360 is actually quite slim, compared to the monstrous PS3... It just has a sound... noise... overheating...red ringing... problem
@Wesscoast Not to mention the power supply.
