EVO 4G receives a Palm Pre inductive charging transplant (video)
Oh yes, an HTC EVO has been modded with the inductive charging coil ripped from the still beating heart of a Palm Pre. The 30 minute soldering project does have the side effect of rendering compass apps useless while creating a slight bulge in the battery cover. Other than that, it just works -- or so says the creator. See the modded EVO get busy with a Palm Touchstone and do what yours can't in the video after the break.

I'm not first on this one either.
Also, pretty nice. And the bugle is not bad. Protects camera and makes it fit better with in the hand.
@pintozoz know I don't need this, but for some reason I want this for my EVO
there's a video shows nexus one can do this few months ago.
looks nice
cool
Now HTC just has to release one itself.
@WenJam I thought they were...
What a waste of a good Pre.
@samleung
They should call this mod "Dren."
Currently my pre sits on the touchstone as an alarm clock only now. I wish I had more use for it.it was a really great perk. Really annoyed my evo has no dock now.that's the perfect marriage.
Not to be a party pooper. It's nice and all, but I want Froyo on Evo before anything else. Now hit me with some sweet!
@cdf74dc9
as awesome as that would be ive tried froyo on my nexus and the prerelease is still pretty buggy with no official release in sight
plus if you really wanted you could root it and put the froyo prerelease on it but without sense ui
Call me zynical but I think the Evo can use all the chargin' it can possible get ;)
@bnutzinger I know I don't need this, but for some reason I want this for my EVO
@bnutzinger My Evo does amazing with over 10 hours of heavy data and minor call usage. I charge it for less seven hours at night.
@bnutzinger
I had my Evo off the charger for 14 hours yesterday, and it still had a little over 30% battery left. The Evo actually has pretty decent battery life.
"ripped from the still beating heart of a Palm Pre"
Did that line remind anyone else of "Apocalypto?"
@Smart People Play Tuba
No sir, that there's classic Temple Of Doom.
If I had a pre, I'd do this mod while chanting "Kahliiiii Ma! Kaaahli Maaaaa!"
Coming from a Palm Pre with a touchstone and going to the Droid with it's dock, I really feel no difference. The touchstone is cooler in theory, but it charges slower and makes the phone really hot. Also times where it doesn't grab and you have to slide the phone around.
Dropping it into a dock is just faster and looks as cool. Until it's actually wireless charging, such as a 10 inch area around a hub that gets charged, I feel fine passing.
Nice work on the modification though.
This is cool. As much as I would love to try this myself I can't. Why you ask? Because unfortunately there has been a turn of events on my end. My EVO's screen went out at 2 am this morning. I'll be taking it back to best buy and I'm done. As much as I wanted to give android a fair chance, it seems as though the offs were against me. I tried, I really did try to embrace android but one slip is enough for me. I'm glad I have my 3gs to fall back on. I'll get a iPhone 4 later this year and I'm done. :(
@KetsuSan If one slip is enough for you, you're going to have a very difficult life.
@KetsuSan so your blaiming Android for a bad screen?
@KetsuSan OMGZ! BAD HARDWARE = ANDROID CRAP. O NOEZ!!!
;)
@neeko18
LOL of course. Because HTCs are the only android phones out there
"Sarcasm"
@pintozoz Actually Im quite patient when it comes to hardships life sends me. But when it comes to unknown terrain one should be skeptical. When you venture out and you happened to be bitten in the ass then you will surround yourself with familiarity from then on out. And No, Android didn't cause my screen to go white, or my headphone Jack to malfunction, but I rather just stick to what I know.
@KetsuSan So you left your gf after your first fight, quit your job after your first big talk concerning an issue, changed car after a flat tire, moved house after first power outage, amputated leg after first leg pain, removed tooth after first toothache.
Dear Christ man, your life sucks.
Get over it. You're just finding a reason to start a flame war. No, Android did not cause the screen to damage.
PROTIP: Usually the first batch of any new item have issues.
Also, you opened a Sprint account for an Evo while you had an AT&T account and now you're going to cancel the Sprint account and go back to the AT&T one? If that's not the case, that's exactly what it sounds like to me. Because, if I'm not mistaken, and correct me if I'm wrong, both those phones are on completely different networks.
@KetsuSan
"This is cool. As much as I would love to try this myself I can't. Why you ask?"
One problem there; I didn't ask.
@HTCAndroidTre
Well, I believe they make the only Androids phones on Sprint, the carrier he's on.
@KetsuSan
Because we all know that the IPhone have never had hardware issues.
OWWWW, sorry just burned my leg with my IPhone.
@KetsuSan
You are a sad little man, blaming all of android for a hardware malfunction that COULD EASILY HAPPEN IN THE IPHONE 4 YOU PLAN TO GET!
Jesus, people like you just make me want to cut my sack off sometimes.
@pintozoz FYI, I gladly keeping my sprint phone (Just got a blackberry bold) and ALL OF THE IPHONES THAT I HAD IN THE PAST HAVE BEEN JAILBROKEN/UNLOCKED FOR T MOBILE... Damn you guys are mean as hell!! Ok, It wasnt androids fault, it was a hardware malfunction on HTC's behalf. And I completely agree with you that when it comes to the first batch of phones, there usually are problems, but dont bite my head off. Sheesh. You're really mean... Oh and btw my iphone 4 I will be buying will be the complete unsubsidized price...
@KetsuSan
So how many phones do you have?
You have a 3GS, then you got an EVO, then you went back to a 3GS and now you have a Blackberry Bold and are going to an iPhone 4?
Either T-mobile must really suck in your area or you have a crush on Sprint. Must be pretty annoying to constantly switch back and forth.
Could have told the two people screwing in the background to stop before the video was taken.
Imitation is still indeed the sincerest form of flattery.
Nice to see some kind of positive news on the evo. Can't believe Engadget posted something positive about the Evo
I just love what happens when you give free phones to developers.
Now THIS is truly magical
So basically, the Evo is Megaman, and it's just ripping through all known cellphones and taking their powers. Nice!
I'm going to have mine fight a DeLorean so it gains the ability to charge via eggshells and empty beer cans.
@Xenoterranos
+2 for Indiana Jones and BTTF references.

WTF man?
