How to: pre-order the iPhone 4 (update: third-party retailers best avoided)
It's now less than twenty-four hours until pre-orders for the iPhone 4 kick off, magic is in the air, and you're feeling good -- but where (and how) do you get your name in the system? There'd be nothing more tragic than waking up on the 24th only to discover that your phone isn't arriving on launch day, so let's get things squared away right now so you know what you need to do tomorrow morning.
Follow the break for everything you need to know!
The most painless way (most likely) will be to pre-order online from the comfort of your home at Apple's site, because you'll be guaranteed delivery on launch day without any hassles of dealing with lines, riots, or uninformed sales clerks. The big question is when exactly the pre-orders will go live, and at this point, no one knows for sure. In all likelihood, it'll happen after the typical "we'll be back soon" outage, but it's unclear whether that'll happen around midnight or tomorrow morning during business hours. Our advice is to hold out until after midnight Eastern tonight, but if you're not at least greeted with "we'll be back soon," hit the sack and get up early. For comparison, iPad pre-orders kicked off at 5:30AM Pacific Time, so we wouldn't be surprised to see the iPhone 4 do the same. You can go into a physical Apple Store if you really want to, but we're being told that you'll just be directed to a computer to go through Apple's website anyway, so there's really no point.
You'll also be able to pre-order in AT&T stores tomorrow, but as far as we can tell, this is going to be a pretty unsavory option -- you'll be required to have your credit card authorized for the full amount upfront, and according to the locations we contacted, you won't even be guaranteed availability on launch day; instead, you'll need to wait until the 25th for some bizarre reason. AT&T's website seems to be a better option, with June 24 delivery available to both consumer and business customers. The carrier won't disclose to us what time pre-orders will start, so keep an eye out.
Major third-party retailers will be getting in on the action, too:
Update: It seems there's been a last-minute change in plans at some RadioShacks -- pre-orders will no longer require a $50 deposit, and some locations will be opening early in the morning. Our advice? Check with your local store right now.
Update 2: We've been tipped that Apple may now be blocking third-party retailers from taking pre-orders altogether tomorrow. RadioShack already changed its story on us, and now Best Buy locations have started doing the same, telling us that they definitely won't be taking pre-orders tomorrow but may be by the end of the week. Bottom line -- hit up Apple's website in the morning.
Update 3: Some folks are being told that pre-orders are still on for tomorrow at Best Buy; that doesn't seem to be the case at the three stores we've called, so your mileage may vary. If we had to guess, this is just a case of extraordinarily poor employee communication. We'd still avoid hitting up a third-party retailer for the pre-order if possible -- it just seems to be too chaotic at the moment.

- RadioShack will be accepting pre-orders in stores
for a $50 deposit, which will come off the price of the phone when you pick it up; they're throwing in an accessory credit, too (basically the same setup as the EVO 4G launch). Stores will be openingat their normal times tomorrow, but some locations will be opening early on launch day. - Best Buy is the same deal, basically -- $50 deposit taken in-store at the regular opening time, with most locations opening early on launch day.
- Walmart seems to be pretty clueless about the situation; though they're confirmed for a June 24 launch, we weren't able to find any sales clerks at any of the locations we contacted that knew how, or if, pre-orders would be taken tomorrow (two didn't even know there was a new iPhone, and instead insisted we were referring to the $97 deal on the 3GS). Bottom line: only get in touch with these guys tomorrow as an absolute last resort.

best buy to me is the best way
Why is the term 'magic' always used to describe this device?
@marq really? I always find them misinformed there...or at least blissfully unaware.
@marq
is any able to answer this for me?? will the iphone 4 be able to play hd films and tv shows bought off itunes? or will it be limited to the playback of hd content captured on the camera?
@John Locke
You predict? Lol, who are you.
@Mike Vick
because it magically makes $300 of my money disappear once a year
@marq Same here. Might as well get some Reward Zone pts.
@marq
I am getting one at home online. After so many lessons, I figured Apple has got the stock in check to allow a worldwide launch(semi world wide). I'll just wake up at normal time and click and submit :)
@John Locke Phony ass. You never bought the EVO.
@DoctarPeppar
LOL
I don't know why, but I was compelled to uprank that burn.
@DoctarPeppar I know right? lol why do we need to hear his story of how he has to return his Evo 4g for an iphone 4... oh how sad :P haha
Why was I downranked? Downrank me again, I dare ya !!!! -_-
@Slvrgun
LOL! I have never laughed so hard today! Especially when I read the post about the issues on the HTC EVO. I swear I was going to crap my underwear.
@John Locke You can return your EVO for a full refund. There are no extra restocking fees. The store refunds you the price of the phone, then Sprint will send you a check for the down-payment on your contract (if you got one).
You will receive 100% back of what you payed.
I bought mine from RadioShack btw, and this is the information I've been told. I purchased two EVO's, returned one without any issues. I'm stilling using my other one ;)
@Mike Vick
You know, you could try playing the ROLE of Mike Vick when you post. You know, a dog abusing drug addict?
Maybe people will find it more funny and insightful?
I hope you guys are having fun downranking me -_- keep it coming lol.
@fmc159
It looks like you can play HD videos, but VGA is the best you can output (via an adapter):
From apple.com/iphone/specs.html:
Video formats supported: H.264 video up to 720p, 30 frames per second, Main Profile level 3.1 with AAC-LC audio up to 160 Kbps, 48kHz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4, and .mov file formats....
Will the iPhone 4 be able to record me gettin twisted and watchin a coupla dog fights in HD? It best be able to cos imma buy 2. One for me and one for my lil homie -_-
@Vaio
If it sucks, why are you here? You seem dumb writing something like that.
@GMoney
I was really surprised at Apple for keeping VGA alive even longer...first the iPad, now the iPhone 4...it really needs to die...seriously...what is the harm of supporting HDMI? Are they EVER going to switch?
They won't even support HDMI with the macbooks either...it's like Jobs has some kind of personal grudge against the standard...
Oh and btw, you won't be able to watch any HD content from itunes store over VGA, since it requires HDCP...sucks for people who buy stuff from itunes I guess...keep it up Jobs, you're just encouraging piracy.
@John Locke
Man, you've had a busy day of trollin'
@Mike Vick
There's no use, the iFan reality distortion device is powered by a zero point energy module, it's impenetrable.
@marq
Hmm.. only covers US.
Three (3) in the UK have a "register your interest" form, for both potential new customers and existing.
@nikhilshinday
"Walmart seems to be pretty clueless about the situation... two didn't even know there was a new iPhone"
You gotta love Walmart. LOL
@John Locke
You sound like 'hated one's' big brother.
Not exactly like him. But stupid like this, you must definitely be related.
@marq yeah I would say either best buy or AT&T because apple only gives you 14 days to bring it back where best buy and AT&T have 30 day return policy on phones. Not saying you are gonna want to bring it back but thats a good option.
@Shooter McGavin
I keep getting downranked haha. This is funny. Come on iTurd fans. Downranke me again :)
@marq
What an ugly phone.
@Mike Vick
I'm not an iFan but I am downranking you because you're a cock.
Just so you know.
@Sepirioth
$400, in my case...
@FORDY
All the UK MNOs (o2, orange/t-mobile, vodafone, 3) have 'register your interest' forms on their repective websites.
AFAIK there are currently no announcements as to if any MVNOs (Asda, Tesco, Sainsburys, Virgin Mobile etc) are to carry the iPhone4
@fmc159 It will be able to play videos from any source provided they are encoded into the formats supported by the operating system:
http://www.apple.com/iphone/specs.html
Just yesterday, I ripped two seasons of Metalocalypse from DVD and can play them back just fine on my iPad. The iPhone 4 will be no different.
@nikhilshinday
There are those us at best buy that are not misinformed or blissfully unaware. But I see enough people give me the look; like I am about to shovel a load of crap their way. Sometime time it is just easier to play clueless corporate drone that many expect us to be.
@marq i tried apple website to order an iphone just as a dry run to see what options i am presented with. It didnt read my profile correctly for At&t and showed only one activated currently. In my opinion i u are starting a new line or have one existing line then apple store is for u.
i just stopped By AT&t store and confirm with one employ that preorders will be taken with delivery dates (to your door steps or in store pick up) of 24, 25 and 26 june. He didnt say but I gathered that 24th delivery date is not going to happen in most AT&T preorders (same as reported by engadget).
I asked him about availability of white iphones and he apparemtly didnt know anything special about it and said why wouldnt they be available? I showed him engadget post and he was surprised to see screen shot of AT&T system and said that engadget post could be correct as it shows screen shot of AT&T system which is going live tomorrow (different color and scheme as compared to curreny system).
Why all these employees are always unaware of exact details and folks at engadget are?
@Mike Vick
Wow, you're just sad aren't you. Make everyone happy, get a life.
Please.
@FanBoyTheTroll lol
@Vellie Apple gives the same 30 days on iphones and doesn't charge the restock fee. This is to be in line with ATT's 30 day contract policy. It's just 14 on everything else
As for the whole preorder thing. I suspect that anyone not Apple had to place an order for iphones already or will shortly. so their list and the stock won't be in line the way that it is at the Apple stores, where they promise to have enough to cover all the pre-orders (even if they have to cut off said orders days early to be so certain)
@DavidBurnia
Why do i keep getting downranked? Downrank again you iTurds lol
@marq Radio Shack IS doing some kind of pre-orders tomorrow, from what I've been hearing, starting at noon Central. Going in and signing up gets you a PIN that's supposed to be good for an iPhone 4 on the 24th.
@DoctarPeppar
You're misinformed my friend. Macs have an equivalent standard to HDMI and have for quite a while. Currently it's mini display port which can adapt backwards to HDMI. This superseded mini-dvi, dvi, and micro dvi which all use the same signaling hardware as HDMI.
@ScottishDan
I do believe VirginMobile Canada is getting the iPhone 4... but that's not UK.
@rydewnd2 Youre an idiot... TVs and Monitors do NOT support displayport technology, they support HDMI. Displayport is simply a way for apple to brand a connector that they hope will become a standard in the future.
@nikhilshinday Shouldn't I get a discount for pre-ordering my iPhone 4?
i went to best buy for the pre order and it took no more than ten minutes there was no line or anything plus now i dont have to wait for the mail to arrive on the 24th...maybe just worry about the lines.
@Axertion
I know from my own horrible personal experience that Sprint will ABSOLUTELY charge you a restocking fee when you return your Evo.
No matter how much I argued they wouldn't budge. Unless there's a physical defect with the device, there's no way out of it. And if you complain to Sprint corporate to get your money back from them, they just say that the physical stores are a separate thing and they have nothing to do with what they charge.
And yes I'm talking about a regular ol' corporate Sprint store, not an authorized retailer or something like that.
Apple store Here I come
Preorder the device dude. Do not wait online for a phone. I assume you have a job, no?
Pre-orders are so complicated we need a how-to now engaget?
How is it complicated? If engadget was to offer a 'how to' the fanboys of other phones would scream and cry lol.
@plbelanger
I'm going with the other article - How not to pre-order the iPhone 4
