How to: pre-order the iPhone 4 (update: third-party retailers best avoided)
It's now less than twenty-four hours until pre-orders for the iPhone 4 kick off, magic is in the air, and you're feeling good -- but where (and how) do you get your name in the system? There'd be nothing more tragic than waking up on the 24th only to discover that your phone isn't arriving on launch day, so let's get things squared away right now so you know what you need to do tomorrow morning.
Follow the break for everything you need to know!
The most painless way (most likely) will be to pre-order online from the comfort of your home at Apple's site, because you'll be guaranteed delivery on launch day without any hassles of dealing with lines, riots, or uninformed sales clerks. The big question is when exactly the pre-orders will go live, and at this point, no one knows for sure. In all likelihood, it'll happen after the typical "we'll be back soon" outage, but it's unclear whether that'll happen around midnight or tomorrow morning during business hours. Our advice is to hold out until after midnight Eastern tonight, but if you're not at least greeted with "we'll be back soon," hit the sack and get up early. For comparison, iPad pre-orders kicked off at 5:30AM Pacific Time, so we wouldn't be surprised to see the iPhone 4 do the same. You can go into a physical Apple Store if you really want to, but we're being told that you'll just be directed to a computer to go through Apple's website anyway, so there's really no point.
You'll also be able to pre-order in AT&T stores tomorrow, but as far as we can tell, this is going to be a pretty unsavory option -- you'll be required to have your credit card authorized for the full amount upfront, and according to the locations we contacted, you won't even be guaranteed availability on launch day; instead, you'll need to wait until the 25th for some bizarre reason. AT&T's website seems to be a better option, with June 24 delivery available to both consumer and business customers. The carrier won't disclose to us what time pre-orders will start, so keep an eye out.
Major third-party retailers will be getting in on the action, too:
Update: It seems there's been a last-minute change in plans at some RadioShacks -- pre-orders will no longer require a $50 deposit, and some locations will be opening early in the morning. Our advice? Check with your local store right now.
Update 2: We've been tipped that Apple may now be blocking third-party retailers from taking pre-orders altogether tomorrow. RadioShack already changed its story on us, and now Best Buy locations have started doing the same, telling us that they definitely won't be taking pre-orders tomorrow but may be by the end of the week. Bottom line -- hit up Apple's website in the morning.
Update 3: Some folks are being told that pre-orders are still on for tomorrow at Best Buy; that doesn't seem to be the case at the three stores we've called, so your mileage may vary. If we had to guess, this is just a case of extraordinarily poor employee communication. We'd still avoid hitting up a third-party retailer for the pre-order if possible -- it just seems to be too chaotic at the moment.

Major third-party retailers will be getting in on the action, too:
- RadioShack will be accepting pre-orders in stores
for a $50 deposit, which will come off the price of the phone when you pick it up; they're throwing in an accessory credit, too (basically the same setup as the EVO 4G launch). Stores will be openingat their normal times tomorrow, but some locations will be opening early on launch day. - Best Buy is the same deal, basically -- $50 deposit taken in-store at the regular opening time, with most locations opening early on launch day.
- Walmart seems to be pretty clueless about the situation; though they're confirmed for a June 24 launch, we weren't able to find any sales clerks at any of the locations we contacted that knew how, or if, pre-orders would be taken tomorrow (two didn't even know there was a new iPhone, and instead insisted we were referring to the $97 deal on the 3GS). Bottom line: only get in touch with these guys tomorrow as an absolute last resort.

@korapati
I cant logon to AT&T's site either...but I can get past Apple lookin up my info...so I don't think it's just AT&T...Either way, I am tired and very frustrated...Bout to give up.
this time i got upto store pickup or online order then session time out
i have been logged into mine trying to buy it at ATT too.
wow. apple store throwing java errors..
Check Check Eligibility ... and got Session Expired errors -.-
Apple's website keeps telling me my session has timed out when I go to upgrade...WTF?
i got upto add to cart then it says Oops error.
2nd time i was able to go upto add to cart and got Oops error
All of apple.com seems to be down for me with all links returning the "Oops" screen...
OOPS OOPS OOPS. That's all I can get the pre-order form to tell me at various steps... what a failure.
i am regularly able to get to the add to cart screen now but always oops after that.
nice store is back offline
am an att premier member who is upgrade eligible.
have an existing BB personal $30 data plan on the account.
now, when I try to pre-order, I can select iphone 4 but the only data options I get is $25 or $15 data pro plans.....wtf.
I thought I was grandfathered in for the $30 unlimited plan.
is this grandfathering only for previous iphone owners only?
this is starting to piss me off....
AT&T pre order is up
Woot! Just finished my pre-order from ATT.com. No problems and it allowed me the option of keeping my $30 unlimited data.
finally i was able to buy it from at&t site an hour ago.
Just tried via ATT and got this in a nasty red font but clicked around for an other upgrade path and saw a 16 and 32 GB black 4G as an upgrade option.
"There was a problem with your request.
P1015: We're sorry, but we are experiencing a system error that prevents us from completing your request. For non iPhone related upgrades, please call Customer Care at 1-888-867-4384 and provide the error number at the beginning of this message."
did anyone receive a confirmation email yet from at&t's website after placing an order?
@mas3423 Nope, been almost 2 hours and still no confirmation email.
Hey, I don't see the white iphone up for pre-order, anyone know why?
IPhone is my favorite.
Trying to pre-order on Apple's site, errors galore.
AT&T's upgrade eligibility server seems to be down at the moment (8:45am U.S. Central Time). Apple's site errors at checking my eligibility, and AT&T's site says it's down for maintenance when I try to check my eligibility. I can't pre-order at all right now.
Been trying for over 4 hours to preorder. My screen still says "please wait while we process your request" with the circle moving, but it has been like that for two hours now. What to do?
Just called my local Radio Shack (Harrisburg, PA). They were taking pre-orders and didn't require a $50 deposit because they can't guarantee they will have them on the 24th. I can wait a few extra days (if I have to at all) since I can trade my 2 year old 3G in for $100, plus get an additional $20 accessory credit. Can't beat that deal!
AT&T Screwed the pooch once again! I was at one of the local AT&T stores by my house at 8:45am this morning. Store opens at 9am. About 11 people in front of me and another 10 to 15 behind me. They take down our names and lead us in and first disappointment. There is only three employee's there. There is 9 customer service stations and only 3 employees working. I knew it was going to be a long morning. System crash on the people in front of my numerously. After waiting in line...AT&T informs the group that only Credit Card purchases were available. No Debit Cards..No checks no Cash. Bunch of people get up and leave. I finally get called. Three system reboots, transferred over to different PC...then back to the first and finally 1 hour and 28 minutes later my iPhone4 was on preorder! I hear not many people are having good luck trying to book theirs online. AT&T should know better by now!!
Horrendous service. Been trying online for the last 6 hours. This is such a poor show.
I was in luck! I was able to pre-order at my local best buy. They were offering the white and the black versions.
Thank god. Was able to PreOrder a 16gb Black & 32gb Black (wanted white though) at BestBuy. Was the first one to order it. They didn't have the email with the info yet or any forms ready.
Also went to Radio Shack and they start their reservation at noon today. Gonna hold two there just to be safe. I think between ATT, Best Buy and Radio Shack somebody is going to come up short. This is a B'day gift for the wife, so I have to be sure. Lol
Finally made it through the pre-order process on AT&T's site. Although it does say shipping FedEx overnight to arrive on the 24th, there was CYA wording in there that basically said it might not arrive on the 24th due to various factors such as availability.
FYI.... Best Buy is doing preorders. They are even preordering the White iPhone 4. Now... whether they get them at launch is a different story, but you can preorder both the black and white iPhone 4's at Best Buy. I got 2 of them.
I was first in line at a local Best Buy in Orlando this morning at 9am (store opened at 10). Pre-Order process was simple -- filled out a piece of paper with my AT&T and contact information, paid a $50 deposit (in the form of a gift card), and was on my way in under 2 minutes.
The Best Buy employee said that there has been a bit of communication breakdown between them and Apple, and that there's no guarantee that the phones will arrive on the 24th. The only guarantee he could give me is that I would receive the first 16 GB Black iPhone 4 when they did arrive.
Supposedly a Best Buy representative will call me when they have more information from Apple and a clear(er) idea as to when the device will arrive and be ready for pick-up.
Kinda wishing I'd ordered online through Apple/AT&T now... hoping that this "communication breakdown" gets unbroken soon so that I can get my grubby paws on my phone come the 24th!
AT&T is down again...Apple still is havin major issues...Goin on 13 hours of me tryin....SIGH
Since I have a discount (union gives me one as per state employee) .. I cannot upgrade my phone online. I tried over the phone, and was told that they are not accepting orders over the phone.
I then tried a main store .. where I was told they are only taking major credit cards .. BLAH. NO Visa check cards
@Vero
This whole thing is a joke and bad business practice on atleast AT&T's part...Apple is just as much to blame though Im thinkin...
A friend and I went to Radioshack, and they told us:
a) There are only 9,000 spots available nationwide
b) They are not accepting "preorders" but instead "product requests" which do not necessarily guarantee you'll get it. They also did not accept money, only contact information. We could not get our information into the system (store manager kept getting some error, no doubt related to system load) but we left our info.
We both wound up pre-ordering on AT&T's website, before their 4:30pm EST cutoff, so we're supposed to get ours the 24th sometime.
