How to: pre-order the iPhone 4 (update: third-party retailers best avoided)
It's now less than twenty-four hours until pre-orders for the iPhone 4 kick off, magic is in the air, and you're feeling good -- but where (and how) do you get your name in the system? There'd be nothing more tragic than waking up on the 24th only to discover that your phone isn't arriving on launch day, so let's get things squared away right now so you know what you need to do tomorrow morning.
Follow the break for everything you need to know!
The most painless way (most likely) will be to pre-order online from the comfort of your home at Apple's site, because you'll be guaranteed delivery on launch day without any hassles of dealing with lines, riots, or uninformed sales clerks. The big question is when exactly the pre-orders will go live, and at this point, no one knows for sure. In all likelihood, it'll happen after the typical "we'll be back soon" outage, but it's unclear whether that'll happen around midnight or tomorrow morning during business hours. Our advice is to hold out until after midnight Eastern tonight, but if you're not at least greeted with "we'll be back soon," hit the sack and get up early. For comparison, iPad pre-orders kicked off at 5:30AM Pacific Time, so we wouldn't be surprised to see the iPhone 4 do the same. You can go into a physical Apple Store if you really want to, but we're being told that you'll just be directed to a computer to go through Apple's website anyway, so there's really no point.
You'll also be able to pre-order in AT&T stores tomorrow, but as far as we can tell, this is going to be a pretty unsavory option -- you'll be required to have your credit card authorized for the full amount upfront, and according to the locations we contacted, you won't even be guaranteed availability on launch day; instead, you'll need to wait until the 25th for some bizarre reason. AT&T's website seems to be a better option, with June 24 delivery available to both consumer and business customers. The carrier won't disclose to us what time pre-orders will start, so keep an eye out.
Major third-party retailers will be getting in on the action, too:
Update: It seems there's been a last-minute change in plans at some RadioShacks -- pre-orders will no longer require a $50 deposit, and some locations will be opening early in the morning. Our advice? Check with your local store right now.
Update 2: We've been tipped that Apple may now be blocking third-party retailers from taking pre-orders altogether tomorrow. RadioShack already changed its story on us, and now Best Buy locations have started doing the same, telling us that they definitely won't be taking pre-orders tomorrow but may be by the end of the week. Bottom line -- hit up Apple's website in the morning.
Update 3: Some folks are being told that pre-orders are still on for tomorrow at Best Buy; that doesn't seem to be the case at the three stores we've called, so your mileage may vary. If we had to guess, this is just a case of extraordinarily poor employee communication. We'd still avoid hitting up a third-party retailer for the pre-order if possible -- it just seems to be too chaotic at the moment.

- RadioShack will be accepting pre-orders in stores
for a $50 deposit, which will come off the price of the phone when you pick it up; they're throwing in an accessory credit, too (basically the same setup as the EVO 4G launch). Stores will be openingat their normal times tomorrow, but some locations will be opening early on launch day. - Best Buy is the same deal, basically -- $50 deposit taken in-store at the regular opening time, with most locations opening early on launch day.
- Walmart seems to be pretty clueless about the situation; though they're confirmed for a June 24 launch, we weren't able to find any sales clerks at any of the locations we contacted that knew how, or if, pre-orders would be taken tomorrow (two didn't even know there was a new iPhone, and instead insisted we were referring to the $97 deal on the 3GS). Bottom line: only get in touch with these guys tomorrow as an absolute last resort.

@Mr Carstairs Trying to get the same answer man.
When it's available here in Europe (Germany to be precise), will I be able to buy it without any connection, i.e. contract? Also, what would the price be for that?
My local AT&T was doing all the paperwork today for the pre order tomorrow. I went ahead and paid and got all the paperwork filled out and they'll do what they have to tomorrow (saves me the hassle of going in while everyone else is flippin' out). The only thing was that they weren't able to preorder the white one. That was a bummer.
I'm thinking Coffee and No dose and a long day of being online at the Apple Store. Bring on the blessed Sleep Deprived insanity!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Work tomorrow should be Awsome!!!!!!!!
Apple's website with @ home delivery. Did the same with my 3GS.
@MRCUR When you pre-ordered your 3Gs did you have to put full down? I'm not quite getting a clear answer anywhere else...
@JonsMind - I can't recall, but I believe Apple put a hold on my card for the entire amount. There's isn't an pre-order amount; you're essentially purchasing the entire phone.
Keep in mind that Apple doesn't actually take the money until the phone ships though...
@MRCUR Oh! Okay, thank you very much! =]
@MRCUR Does Apple know that i am eligible for upgrade? And does it with a Sim that automatically Upgrades from my current 3G? I dont want to receive a new contract and then port from my old 3G.
ATT guy says he is not aware how apple does it !
@aslkqwpo - Yes, Apple can check your upgrade eligibility right through their online store. Apple will ship your new iPhone with a SIM pre-installed. Once you plug the new phone into iTunes and go through the activation (it asks your phone number, name, etc.), your old iPhone will stop working and your new one will work.
It's all done through iTunes and it's all extremely simple.
Chris...wtf? If you order your iPhone at an AT&T store, they capture the card, then it charges when its shipped. This is nothing new. Also, it's being FedEx'd to your home or to the store...why screw up the facts?
@mikemike So if you pre-order from at&t you don't get charged till it's shipped?.. Is this the same if you pre-order from Apple?
I'll definitely be pre-ordering tonight, hopefully for pickup at the Apple Store.
I'm doing Apple Website and home delivery too, now.
The thing is - I work tonight - so I'll have to bring my netbook and get on the network to order whenever it comes up....or come home and stay awake until the pre-order goes live...
Then...I'm working the night before the 24th...so I'll have to come home from a 3 day work stretch and mainline no-doze until FedEx comes (otherwise they'll just not knock and leave a 'Sorry we missed you' note...grrr)....
So yeah...was SO hoping to do this through a B&M store. Waiting for FedEx on the 24th is what's going to suck the most.
Aren't you going to show how turn on the iphone, turn it off, etc etc....
Looks like Steve Jobs pays you guys a lot!!!!! :-)
how long you think the pre orders will last?
I have an iPhone 3G. I want to pre-order an iPhone 4 tomorrow and have it shipped to my home on the 24th.
Since my current phone uses a normal SIM card, will apple send me a microSIM card? If so, will the number transfer between the two?
@themattman
The iPhone comes with a SIM card installed. All you have to do is connect the new phone to your computer and open iTunes. You can transfer all your account info and restore all your data to the new phone. It's really easy.
Sorry if someone else has already posted something similar.
I just talked to an apple rep through 1-800-My-Apple, and was informed that the website would begin taking orders at midnight and that the phone bank would start taking orders at 7:00AM EST . . .I asked if it was midnight Eastern or Pacific, but the rep told me that he hadn't been given that information yet. The rep suggested that it would be "probably go on sale at midnight EST", but that he "couldn't confirm".
At least we've narrowed launch down to either midnight or 3AM eastern via apple.com.
Can anyone help me here? My wife and I would like to switch from T-Mobile to ATT and pre-order 2 iPhones. I'm eligible for ATT's Premier discount for business customers so i'm thinking my best bet is to pre-order with ATT as I doubt apple will deal with ATT's discounts (Apple doesn't even list all the plans compatible with iPhones). So if I want to pre-order 2 iPhones i'd have to go to an ATT store? judging from that pdf ATT online will only allow one iPhone per household even for new customers (why?). But then I call my local ATT store and they tell me to preorder from Apple's site. I can't win ha ha. I think i'll try online first see if it's possible and if not i'll try the ATT store.
@dsmith1337 if you are becoming a 'Premier Business' customer with AT&T, you HAVE to order through them (either via online, store or phone). Apple will not be able to help you, trust me, I've been on a premier business account for years and Apple only helps when it comes to customer support via AppleCare.
Since you're not already a customer, you probably have to set up an account first either over the phone or in the store because you won't have an account # to log-in online and pre-order the phone from the Premier business website.
@dsmith1337 How it has worked: If there is a need for two phones have two people there, also, if you have a discount, make sure to take a work ID and Drivers License or make sure to have a work email address so that the rep can send a link to you on your work email that will then put in the discount. Discounts for at&t do not include unlimited minute plans or text, but the $25 data plan and minute plans other than unlimited support your discount. Just a bit of FYI...go to the store with your wife so that you can both pre-order. It should be a very good experience, at&t is trying hard, you can tell
@dsmith1337
Just sign up with a regular account and then convert your account to a premier account later.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but Premier accounts do not get a discount on the iPhone price. You will get a discount on your line of service, but not necessarily the price of the phone.
@dsmith1337 Thanks for the help i think ill end up going to the ATT store. hopefully whoever is working tomorrow will have a better idea than the 2 people I talked to today. I'll give the website a shot at midnight just to try it but it does sound like the store will be my best bet. And yes i get a 15% discount on the voice and data plan not on the phone or text messages.
Here in Australia we can buy these outright when released no contract.
Does anyone know what's going to happen to my old phone once I pre-order (assuming Apple site?) I see that you can choose "replacing a current phone" when going through the order process.
Does Apple activate the phone while its on route? In other words, is my current 3G going to go "phone dead" before I receive the new one? I usually just go into the AT&T store, but I want to get Apple delivery this time...
My radioshack requires a $50 gift card.
I gotta do an "upgrade swap." How do I go about it? AT&T store my only option?
Pre orders at an AT&T store will be available when the store opens it's doors at regular hours. Also you can have your preorders shipped to a store or residence.
the most important question:
Who is the asian chick on the facetime demo and where do we find out more about her??
Just walked in to my local at&t retail store to get the skinny on pre-ordering and was told the following. "If you pre-order you will have to have the phone shipped to your house, you cannot pick it up at the store on launch day." "Once the phone arrives at your house you will have to bring it into the store to complete activation." "We are working with apple to figure out how this process will work." I was told this by an employee with a supervisorish person standing next to him. Has anyone heard of anything like this? It sounds alittle wacky to me.
@vanpeltbrad
that is incorrect info. You will have the option of home delivery or to the store.
I hope i can catch the preorder. Dont really want to go to the apple store and deal with the BS shenanigans. I just want my phone in peace. if i can get it delivered even sweeter.
Online Apple Store. Easy like Sunday mornin.
@PinkyBlackrose
Cold hard cash for me... Hate using the CC's.
My Local Radio Shack said they are not taking orders until 12:30 EST :O
They open at 9 EST
Can someone help me?
I have a non-contract phone over AT&T and want the iPhone 4. If I am capable of pre ordering the phone and getting home delivery, how does it work? Does Apple send over a micro sim that I activate or what's the deal? Thanks.
@BartDude
Yes. They will ship it to you, and you will choose your plan, etc. over iTunes.
@BartDude No they email it to you. So then you print it out. You then go to your computer on the sim card you printed there will be a code
44:55:4D:41:53:53 you type it in itunes and just click YES!! when it prompts you for confirmation.
@FrankDTank
Just checked this is the code 44:55:4D:42:41:53:53
i am a walmart connections center associate and i can promise you that wal-mart will NOT be doing preorders at all. I went all the way up the chain of command to get this info from the president of the company, who is infact and iPhone user.
I called Apple who told me that the site could update as early as 12:01, but they have no official information. What the woman did tell me was that Apple should be accepting preorders in black and WHITE, while at&t will only have black at the moment.
Thanks Haganwalker. I can obviously add the iPhone line to an existing family plan, right?
@BartDude
No problem. Sure. It will replace your current phone, or you can add a line to your family plan. Example, if you have a Motorola RAZR and upgrade to an iPhone, when you activate through iTunes, the SIM in the RAZR will deactivate and your iPhone will activate with your same number, etc...and that will become your primary phone. Hope it helps.
@haganwalker
Perfect. I have some shit Samsung I bought for the sole purpose of buying the iPhone just a month later. All I was really worried about was the SIM situation. Appreciate your help.
I am curious as to what kind of margin Apple gave up to get this phone in Walmart?
If you pre-order from Walmart, you blew it!
I called apple and was told you could do pre-order over the phone @ 7 a.m. and online at 9a.m.
If we order from Apple, is there a premium to ensure launch-day delivery?
@Veraxus
No. They actually ship the day before launch day, so you receive the phone on launch day. No extra charge.
