HTC EVO 4G fully rooted, freedom loving people everywhere rejoice
You've undoubtedly been following the story -- hell, maybe you've even partaking in some serious WiFi tethering. Well, the Android Police (not an actual police force) are reporting that the EVO 4G has finally been rooted, fully and completely. What's this mean? Well, for starters, enterprising individuals will soon be writing to /system from within the OS, removing Sprint's apps and flashing from custom ROMs. Pretty sweet, right? Hit up the source link to get started! But please, don't brick your phone. For real.

It's the root to all evil. :^)
@Android looks Hacked Together
even apple has validated htc's black slab style by copying its style via the new iphone
@dank414
The superphone just got a little more super.
@dank414 I wonder if this phone has the sume multi touch issue as the nexus one:

@Android looks Hacked Together Funny, I never thought Apple fanboys would admit their own devices' flaws.
@SusieK http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ieuB0VvkmwA
Evo multitouch works ok.
@dank414
I'm the root of all EVO...
@dank414
FULLY ROOTED?
When will we get 4G here in NYC so we can see the huge difference between 3G and 4G?

@dank414 since you are highly ranked may i ask you a question and all other folks on this post.
is there any way to use HTC EVO 4G on AT&T(3G) or Verizon (3G)? I understand there is an unlock and this unlock promises phone will work on any GSM or any other provider in the world. is this accurate?
@ildarado As far as i know Evo 4G is a CDMA phone, and it won't work in any other network except Sprint. The unlock code you're talking about is a code that locks the phone to a specific GSM network, very used here in Europe (dunno about US tho). After you unlock any GSM phone you can use it on any other GSM network as long as you insert the correspondent SIM card.
@dank414
Indeed. Rooting is the only way to enjoy Android.
Unfortunately, if Android were "open" it would not be necessary. The difficulty of creating root on the EVO is further proof that manufacturers and carriers are what is wrong with the mobile experience.
No fees for tethering. No fees for limited or throttled data. There is one plan: unlimited...and how we use it is our business. this is why we root, and we'll keep doing it until these idiots at the big four realize it.
In the meantime, gimme an android and it will do as I say. Suck on that, HTC, Motorola, Samsung, Verizon, TMO, AT&T and Sprint!
@ildarado There is a method to use it on Verizon's 3G, but you still pay through Sprint. Its on XDA.
@FanBoyTheTroll the same slugs blaming apple for the iphone limitations..
hypocrites...
And with that, the EVO 4G entered the ranks of enthusiast superphones.
Welcome.

Welcome.
@SusieK
Similar to the Incredible and Galaxy S, the EVO 4G uses the newer Atmel maXTouch sensor whereas the Nexus 1 uses the older Synaptics ClearPad 2000 sensor.
Synaptics now has the ClearPad 3000 which supports up to 10 fingers at once and scales to 8" but still falls short of the maXTouch sensor which supports unlimited touches up to 10".
@angstwad Android is "open" if it weren't open, these companies wouldn't be utilizing it as much. However, where I'll agree with you is that, the form that we receive Android installed in is not as truly "open" as Android should be since OEMs and carriers have their way. A good example is AT&T, without open code and ability to freely alter the device, they wouldn't be gimping phones.
All I'm saying is, let's not go and blame Android/Google, while let's also praise those who empower us to root, and let's be thankful that the community is largely embraced (as opposed to a fruit company that constantly blocks jailbreaking through iTunes when they release iOS updates).
@gracefulspammer You could always move from NYC.
@xconan The basic slab design has been around for ages. Apple started the trend of ultra clean lines and minimal buttons. I've handled both the Incredible and Evo. I am hoping the iPhone will have better style and build quality. HTC phones I find are a little tacky. Too big or with weird styling elements. The EVO looks comical on a user. I saw a guy taking a call on it. Just looked ridiculous. HTC Incredible looks great - other than the back cover. But build quality is shameful. Very cheap plastic.
Can it be... Some actual good news about the EVO?!?!? Well it's about god damn time!
@EddieN, only some of the .003 models were effected. Those that got the .002 are fine.
@Templarian
Funny how Engadget didnt mention this..
omg i want that phone so bad, forget a iphone
If only I had one to root...
reported by androidpolice....but done on XDA by TOAST!!
@apristel with full credit given within the report.
@Archon810
Yeah i know, but you think Engadget could throw the credit his way.
sheesh.
look at that antique G1 in the background...
@ericisthename aww, it looks so lonely and unwanted.
@ericisthename It wont be alone for long, 4G will join it later in the year when the next greatest and best phone comes out.
i have to say, i love the developers who root android phones, and jailbreak iphones. All they do is add features fo' free.
@I Fling Poo for free indeed, though most accept donations, sparking their commitment level. An excellent model if you ask me.
@Archon810
If 0.01% of jailbreakers/rooters donate $1. Well deserved.
I hope sprint takes a hint that no one wants their garbage preloaded apps on their phones. At least give us the option to download if we want them that badly.
Is rooting really gonna make my phone better ?
@justosac
Totally depends if you want it or not...a certain ROM you want to run or a feature thats not present in your current one or even a 2.2 ROM, an application that only worked rooted etc
@justosac
Yes, yes it will.
Ah, nothing like the smell of a freshly-rooted Android device or a just-jailbroken iPhone. Oh the places you will go...
It's a real shame that people actually have to modify a device to reach it's full potential, that was one of the attractive features of the n900. It's become pretty easy to do, though.
@MrFairladyz
Meh. A jailbroken iPhone is still an iPhone.
@Programmer Which means you have all the beauty and slickness of the iPhone OS, plus every benefit that Android could possibly dream of, plus hardware built well beyond anything HTC has ever dreamed of building. Your point was?
@Programmer a jailbroken iphone feels more like an android device than an iphone
@Programmer
I like the iPhone when its jailbroken... makes it a billion times better but it sux when apple keeps blocking it... then u can't update the firmware or u loose ur jailbreak... I hate Apple sometimes..
@youngzayiles I have a jailbroken iPhone, I don't know how people can live with a regular iPhone.
@Console fanboy
Yeah I can't use my iphone without SBSettings. Winterboard is nice too although backgrounder doesn't work too well on 3g since it starves for RAM all the time.
@youngzayiles
Bad news. Android makers are doing the same stuff. Every OS update breaks root and it's becoming harder to root devices
@Console fanboy
I'm with u I have the evo now but jailbroken is the only way I could have a iPhone... the regular OS gets super boring...
Isn't this wonderful the world of Android?
This has been rooted for days. I rooted my friends on friday.
@blakeh
Only thing that wasn't 100% was the recovery.
@blakeh Yes, but it hasn't been fully rooted. You couldn't have complete control over the device until today.
