iPhone OS 4 to include Facebook video uploads?
We already knew that Apple was likely ratcheting up the social networking integration in iOS 4 -- that is, if the addition of Linked Contacts and .plist entries referring to Facebook means anything (and it probably does). Adding further flame to the fire, the gang at 9to5Mac.com have dug up a bit of code that appears to handle video exporting to the popular social networking site. As near as we can tell, users will be able to send files at 480 x 480, 30 FPS -- and since Facebook is already using HTML5, you won't have that pesky Steve Jobs / Flash thing to worry about.

Didn't we all leave facebook a couple of weeks ago? You guys chickened out?
@Wokis I prefer it to Bebo.. less peadophiles
@Eli Haj
Much like the FaceBook group "Students around the world bunk February the 5th"
Or whichever date. Everyone was planning "to do it", noone actually "did it"
@FORDY Facebook Video Up-loads... Welcome to 2009...
@geekthree
So less competition?
@geekthree Pedophiles hitting on you again?
ABOUT GODDAMN TIME.
Lol
@Paul Elmy
Apple Fans, Welcome to years ago!
Glad I'm a Palm user.
@Kamalot I know... The pre had this when it was released. Why do they need to put this article up?
@Kamalot The Facebook app has supported it for a while, this is just Apple baking it into the OS. Probably because the iPhone Facebook app was abandoned last year and has gradually descended into hell.
@Paul Elmy
My Evo does all of this today, including facebook/address book integration. Once again, Apple spins their being late to the table as being "magical" and everyone eats it right up.
@beenyweenies -
Where and when did Apple describe this feature as being "magical"?
Where and when did Apple describe this feature as being "new"?
Where and when did Apple describe or even mention this feature?
Answer to all questions: they haven't. They have not mentioned it once.
So, if Apple have never talked about this feature, how is it possible for them to have "spun" anything? It is so easy to criticise people and corporations when you just make things up and put words in their mouth.
Seems promising...
They couldn't do it with the Facebook App? There must be some weird difficulty to Facebook video uploads. I did it all the time on the WinMo app, but with Blackberry and Android I've never been able to.
@Dorf I've uploaded dozens of videos to Facebook via the app... This new feature will be outside of the app. They already have Youtube. Facebook wasn't nearly as big back then, though, and video is still a relatively new feature for iPhones.
Am I missing something here...? We've been able to upload videos through the facebook app for quite some time...
@gbowen426 Yeah I've uploaded at least 30 videos i recorded on my 3GS to Facebook with the greatest of ease
@gbowen426
I've uploaded several videos from my 3gs.
@gbowen426 PSSSSSTTTT!! You're ruining the breaking news here of a revolutionary invention by Apple! Up until now, NOBODY has been able to upload videos to Facebook!
@gbowen426
i just did this from my pre on friday. Is this seriously news?
Yes please.
Is the contact linking enabled in the iOS 4 gold master ??
No one has demonstrated it properly, although it's kind of official since you can spot a "unified info" contact card in the last image of apple's website :
http://www.apple.com/iphone/features/phone.html
(for reference about unified info instead of plain info see here : http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/10/04/12/apples_iphone_4_0_beta_includes_linked_contacts_ichat_sounds.html
I hope you guys are wrong and mean view uploaded vids. I uploaded several (before I ditches for the Android goodness).
See how I slipped that totally unnecessary reference in there....
I think this refer to iMovie app, so you will be able to directly upload the edited video to facebook
Strange XML file , shouldn't the value by under the key tag ?
Value
Or
Value
@Ahmed Alzayani
OK ... comment system removed the tags, so here we go again..
˂key name=”name” type=”type”˃Value˂/key˃
Or
˂key name=”name”˃
˂type˃Value˂/type˃
˂/key˃
@Ahmed Alzayani .. It's just the way Apple's dictionary objects are encoded. It goes key then value and you're right is not nested.
Throws a lot of people off but it IS valid XML and completely fine within the ad-hoc rules of XML.
@taligent
OK , strange choice, as the only way to associate the value with the key is to go by order. i sill prefer ˂key name=”name”˃Value˂/key˃ much cleaner.
@taligent It's valid, but it makes parsing and reading it using any normal XML reader more complicated than it should be.
I wonder if mobile operators would consider allowing social media integration with the cellular service.
Having your mobile connected to your facebook/twitter account. That way cellphone makers can integrate facebook/twitter messaging straight into the contacts application.
Of course this doesn't need cell operators. It could work with a simple contacts import and merge with a social media site like facebook, Giving you the option to send messages all from your contacts app to a variety of social media networks.
But it would be easier with mobile network operators integrating the services.
@k3rc
If I understand you correctly, Android already has these features. All of my contacts have their twitter, facebook and Flickr accounts directly linked (and directly accessible) in my adress book. Their more recent facebook post shows directly in the address book under their name, and the address book app uses their Facebook photo as their profile pic if you don't specify a different one. Very cool all around.
@beenyweenies Hmmm, I guess that's what I'm talking about. =)
I imagine having all that info collated makes keeping up with everyone a lot easier.
s/iPhone OS4/iOS 4/

"It doesn't only run on iPhone so we stripped the "phone" part of the time"

*YAWN* Wake me up when the iPhone does something new and interesting. Uploading videos? Wow! No phone has done that before. /sarcasm
@txhoudini
You are kind of stupid, aren't you?
seems sad that something the most basic 'smartphone' can do is news here.
@benchase7
Anything iPhone is worth reporting for Engadget, it doesn't matter if they failed to report another platform doing it months or years ago
@benchase7
What both of you short bus riders are failing to understand is that the iPhone has been able to do this for a long time already, using the Facebook app. This code refers to it being built into the OS itself.
@Jack
hey jack... Don't be an @ss.. Ohh wait.. Look at that. And, the only thing short around here is whats in your pants. Back to the subject... This is old news.. That was the point, sorry to ruin your ferry tail. (misspelling intentional, thought it would be well suited for you). :)
yawn
Sad that iPhone is just now getting this capability when Palm and Android has been doing it for a year... but of course anything iPhone is news for Engadget
This just in, Engadget is reporting that iOS4 will be able to make voice calls!
@Ecoteric
RTFA much?
Seriously, there's even a few comments up above. You make yourself look a bit silly, eh?
And I was convinced all Android users were tech gurus. Half of them can't even read
Augh! So 2009. Been doing this with my Nokia 5800 for almost a year now.
I just want to be able to make a post in the facebook app without it taking 5 minutes to load and then crash and only posting it 50% of the time. I've learned to select all, copy before posting in the event it crashes.
Im glad this feature is finally available on the iPhone, but Im surprised as how many people knocking it. No phone is perfect, and other phones lack the more important features that iPhone has had for years. I'll take the iPod interface/user experience and being able to dock/charge/play my iPhone in most newer cars and home based consumer devices anyday or being able to immediately upload cellphone videos to Facebook.
You can already uoad videos to facebook using the facebook app from the iPhone app, iOS4 is just natively adding in the functionality, you'll be able to upload to facebook directly from your photo album, without having to ever open up the facebook app.
What is this "iPhone OS 4" the article title speaks of? Let's get with the times, Engadget ;-P
The KIN already does this.
@sniperboy3
The main difference is that the iPhone doesn't suck.
