Netflix for Xbox 360 adds search in November
It didn't get a slot during Microsoft's just-concluded Xbox 360 press conference, but the Netflix streaming app will finally add one of the most often requested (and denied) features: the ability to search through the entire Watch Instantly library and add movies to your queue, right from the console. Proudly stating it's the first gaming console to let you update your queue without a computer (Roku does it too, but try playing Gears of War on that) there's no word on any Kinect tie-ins, probably the reason it didn't get any higher billing than a bullet point in Marc Whitten's 2010 letter to Xbox Live members.
Update: As a few commenters have pointed out, it appears Netflix has been beta testing search access for PlayStation 3 Watch Instantly viewers, as shown in these pics. If you'd like to get in on the trial good luck as it seems to be mostly by chance, although creating an all new account probably couldn't hurt -- and hey, your queue was getting stale anyway. [Thanks, Michael]

So Cool !
@kiwi32
I know the article says there are no known Kinect tie ins, but it would be pretty awesome if you could control the interface using hand gestures.
@deepdigits
I am pretty sure you will be able to.
@kiwi32
ok...it may be the first console to allow you to do this from within the app, but i swear the ps3 has a browser. u can close the app, launch the browser, log in...find then add, then close the browser and go back to their app. so hardly the first to do it w/out needing a computer.
@simbadogg
One more step: Remove game from slot, insert Netflix disk.
Having used the PS3 browser, that does not sound like an enjoyable process......
@deepdigits
scared to see what hand gestures the Kinect will react to during those unrated episodes of The Girls Next Door.
@kiwi32 Great Scott!!! its about time. I got rid of netflix on my xbox because their was an inability to search for anything.
@kiwi32 I'm sorry but Kinect just wasn't that exciting to me nor none of these added features. I do find the redesigned 360 to be sexy as hell tho'.
@ddicted
what's so bad about it? sure it would be great to have it build it in, but if i can navigate nfl.com joystiq.com and other gaming sites on my ps3, i think going to netflix.com wouldn't be that much of a burden.
So I can watch Star Wars finally using search!
YESSSSSS
@potretr
Jeez, you're not going to post this at each news right ? ;)
I don't have a 360, how did you used to have to find movies, before you could search? Did you just have to go through the different categories or something? (Comedy, Drama, etc)
@mr88 You had to choose what they add or add to instant queue from the PC or other device.
@plbelanger
Oh, well that seems incredibly annoying haha. Thanks for the reply though, I was just curious.
@mr88 How is it annoying? I think searching would be even more annoying since you have no idea what's available for instant streaming, and you aren't gonna use an on-screen keyboard to search 20 titles until you find one that's available. It's way easier to open up my laptop, find the movie I want, click move to top of the list, then play it on my xbox. The only situation I see this useful is when you know there's a movie in the middle of your queue of 500, and don't feel like scrolling for 20 minutes to find it.
@engadgetcomexcludeengadget
How will it be annoying to have the OPTION of search? I have a wireless keyboard I keep by my couch. This will making finding movies a lot easier.
@mr88
Yeah, having to add stuff to my instant queue was stupid and annoying. Other than that, the Netflix app for the 360 kicks ass.
I never understood why it wasn't included from the start but it's certainly a welcome addition
Wow, these companies expect us consumers to get all excited over a feature that should have been included since day one? What's next? A blue Netflix logo instead of red? The ability to sort?
@ResidentEVO
ahahahaha word, I guess they think we are mindless sheep. At least now when i get an idea for a movie, I don't have to bus out the netbook.
Awesome. About time!
You're telling me. The 360 app was one of the final kickers for me to sign up, and finding out there was no search option the hard way almost had me not renewing my membership.
It's about damn time. How was it ever released without one of the most fundamental features available? It's like putting out a GPS with a million "points of interest," but no ability to actually put in an address.
The wii netflix doesn't have search but it can update the instant queue from it. It has categories that you can browse from. But I agree the search makes me jealous.
Seriously, 5 months for this feature?
Wow they caught up to PS3 netflix.
@Yep
"Proudly stating it's the first gaming console to let you update your queue without a computer..."
Yeah, this is wrong. I can definitely search the Instant Stream movies on my PS3, and have in the past.
@scrumtrelescent7 Gotta admit its good PR tho lol
@scrumtrelescent7
You can't search movies with the PS3 (unless you quit out of netflix and open the ps3 browser)
Both the PS3 and 360 Netflix apps have the same exact features, just different looks. Besides the newly announced "search"
@Handbone Thats false my good man, do you own a ps3?
@Yep No, you're wrong. I have a PS3. You can not search the library from within the app. you can only browse categories, just like the current 360 interface. Sure you can add movies from the web browser, but that's ridiculously inconvenient.
@RichardLawler You might need a new disc playa
@Yep So you say. Got a pic?
@RichardLawler Dude look down at the other comments im not the only one, lol. What do I have to lie for Jesus H Christ.
@RichardLawler Tell you what, I will do you a favor since you refuse to just ask for a new disc. I dont know how long YOU had netflix but I just got my disc over a month ago. Read the link and then get you a new disc playa.
http://boardsus.playstation.com/t5/PlayStation-3-Media/New-Feature-in-Netflix-Disc/m-p/45519940
@Yep According to the board posts, there's no new disc involved. If you can't grab a pic, just say so. It's really simple, grab a picture, post a link or email it to me and I can update the post.
@RichardLawler sure rich, I have it along with other users, but to prove something to you i have to take a pic upload it to a hosting site and post the link here for you. What is the 4chan, you know the rules
@Yep
Here's some pics from my PS3
http://www.dropbox.com/gallery/72329/1/Netflix?h=f8adb3
@zoltanman mine does the same, big props to you doin all that for Richard. I didn't feel the need to prove something cause this is nothing to lie about. Microsoft did a good job saying they are the one and only.
@zoltanman
So I just started watching Lost: Season 2 on Netfix for PS3.. I searched for it.. and then I selected it. Using the search function. Which I have.
@Yep No prob. man, I'm just saying, what do you think a blog is, a place where people post unverified rumors based on forum postings? wait....
@RichardLawler No worries man, I have no need to lie or be a fanboy. I have a ps3 and 360 and use netflix on both. I just find it weird that microsoft slid this in like they are the first console, but it seems netflix and Sony doesn't have it all together either.
November? I've been doing this since last year in Boxee, and for the past several months on my Roku HDXR (which, BTW, hasn't RRoD five times like my 360...) Thanks, but I'll pass, especially since I'm not renewing Live just to watch Netflix.
@Mystakill
Several Months on the roku? The firmware to do this was just launched 2 weeks ago. So unless you were in a beta that can't be accurate. And comparing a beta to a release feature date is kinda a silly comparison.
@scyber
Isn't that what betas are for? :)
Roku has those features now, as well as for several months before the 360 will provide essentially the same functionality. Roku doesn't cost anything more than a one-time fee to purchase the box, plus your regular Netflix fee. Microsoft's artificial Gold requirement adds another $30-50 per year, depending on how much you actually pay for Live.
I am confused...... I can search by name on my PS3 within netflix right now, no browser required. What is the difference ?
This whole time Xbox has been unable to search?
@SpiralGear Same here but it seems one of our fellow users above may need to get a new disc from netflix. He seems to think I am blowing smoke.
A search function! Amazing! What will they think of next?
No more controller I keep dropping the controller behind my bed. I can finally use my hand and scroll the netflix movie tiles.
from my queue can I just say "play office season 2" and it will start?
