Well, hey, Nokia just officially launched the X5 in Singapore, apparently as a followup to the
Twist and the latest chubby square slider to hit in the past few months after the
Motorola Flipout and
Kin One. No, we're not sure why this form factor is suddenly a Thing either. This guy is actually Nokia's second X5 --a China-only X5 with a totally different design was announced in April, so that's nice and confusing. We don't have an official spec sheet on this new X5 yet, but we're told it runs Symbian S60, and has a five megapixel camera, Facebook, MySpace and YouTube integration, as well as some sort of shake-based notification feature we don't really understand. It comes in black, hot pink, bright blue, and, um, unattractive yellow, and it's pretty thick, if the hands-on photos are to be believed. That's all we know for now -- hit the source links for a bunch more photos, and we'll let you know if we hear anything else.
[Thanks, Gabriel]
That looks way too thick from the side
(and yes twss)
@seanGadget
If I remember correctly, the Xseries was designed for teens like its Xpressmusic predecessor.
I don't think any teen would touch it with a ten foot pole.
@seanGadget And so much wasted screen realestate, not to mention that my pockets aren't square.
@seanGadget
whats up with all these out of proportion squarish phones? There was a kin one then motorolla and now Nokia.
@seanGadget
Yack!
@seanGadget Sure, teens will love it...as soon as Nokia runs a huge ad campaign and convinces them that bezel is the new black.
@seanGadget
i think the thickness would allow the phone to fit well into your hand and make it easy to text
@seanGadget I thought that that whole blue part was the phone but when I looked closely, I was that it was just some sort of a rim for the phone. UGLEE
@seanGadget
Same here. I am a die hard Nokia fan, but the first thing that came into my head upon seeing the image was "Chubby". Sure enough, I read the article, and Nilay had also called it "Chubby". Great minds think alike, I guess :D
Btw, I am confused, is it the Chinese-X5 in the picture, or the World-wide X5? Which model is which?
@NikAmi i cant speak for all teens here but to me this thing looks horrible, the hardware sucks and the UI looks terrible. it would take a hell of a lot ad campaigns to sell this thing.
@Ryzvonusef
Ah, reading the gsmarena article (http://www.gsmarena.com/nokia_announces_fair_and_square_x501_plus_nokia_x6_8gb-news-1734.php), I think its a bit clarified. This is actually X5-01 (http://www.gsmarena.com/nokia_x5_01-3396.php). The Chinese one is this one (http://www.gsmarena.com/nokia_x5_td_scdma-3286.php).
Reading the X5-01 link, it list the dimensions and weight as 74.3 x 66.4 x 16.8 mm, 129 g. For an estimated 165 Euro, Its not a bad device.
@Ryzvonusef
The article compares them to Kin and Flipout. From gsmarena, it lists the Kin1 as 19.1mm and Flipout as 17mm thick. The X5-01 is slimmer than both.

@seanGadget This had better be free on contract in the US or it won't ever sell. Not that it looks like it would sell many anyways.
I like it.
@mrsilkunderwear
I don't like the user...they listen to Lady Gaga and their dad appears to be Keanu Reeves.
Such a small screen on a big device.. Wish it was bigger, and unfortunately that's not what she said. =/
Horrible.. it actually looks like a knockoff. The twist looks decent next to that. The real questions is .. Why Nokia Why?
Though I guess it's not meant to ship anywhere else.
In before "Pre" comments because it's a vertical slider. Ugh.
And this little piggy went all the way back home because no-one wants a ugly square phone.
And yes. That so rhymed.
Useless and ugly.
@Johnny Rockets
I believe its not useless if it can make calls :)
@Johnny Rockets
Indeed you are.
This phone would be perfect if the screen is vertical (480*360?)
Nokia seems stocking a lot of QVGA screens....
@xiaobai
Then again, who cares?
This seems to be the new fad. I only hope Nokia has decided to add some good function to it to serve as a redeeming quality. Well I trust that they will.
Ew, another chodephone.
Nokia proves once again why they are one of the worst at designing phones.
Lot's of squeaking from the usual dumbwits who don't realise just how well phones like this one sell in China for Nokia.
Does nothing for me but then it's not aimed at me.
Are we back in the 90's? The helio double side out phone is way better than this crappy phone and it was released 4 yes ago!!! Evo n iPhone are the models now!!!
@creezy8188 YES EVERYONE WANTS TO PAY 700$ OR 60$/MONTH FOR HIS PHONE STUPID NOKIA!
@user47alpha I would guess the MSRP is $300. Also, capslock.
for me, the proper X5 remains to be engineered in Bavaria.
What was the designer on when they came up with this device? Crack? Cocaine?
Its horrible. There, I've said it.
I think this design is pretty smart of Nokia. It's a "funky" E72-like phone with greatly improved music experience. QWERTY keyboard looks almost exactly the same (except that it slides out). All the haters above (and I'm sure below by now) have nothing better to do than talk smack about things that they can't understand from a business perspective.
@angelusp
Agreed... something about the form factor just puts me off...
it's hip to be square, i guess :|
Am i going crazy but doesnt the dad in the presentation shots look like Keanu Reeves?
WHY ?
I love it. Nice design!!
@hated one What is there to say... horrible misspellings and you didn't even bother to read the article. This is only for Chinese market.
@sensori Or is this a second version of that phone but an international version? Hard to tell from the wording of this article.
Official video is up: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=178itMFCE24&playnext_from=TL&videos=VscZxyIqnLI
"X5 with a totally different design was announced in April, so that's nice and confusing"
This is X5-01. How's that confusing? I kinda like the black version. The other colors are clearly not for me, but then on the other hand I'm not a teenager - thank god. ;)
@Rewes: I kinda like it too, I hope it comes to Europe. That video was quite horrible, though :D
And it says just "X5" on the video .. ;)
fugly
lame video. lame phone, like the "unattractive yellow" actually.
Looks dead sexy but anyone under the age of Michael Gartenboig will run the other way when they see the name...
No... ki...a? What is this?? Hahaha...
I like the thickness of it. Fits with the natural hand form. Way too many thin phones out there that make it extremely awkward to type. I have a samsung moment and it seems like the perfect thickness. Thickness-wise, this phone is not too bad. But not a fan of the colors and that huge bezel. But again, it's not targeted after my demographic. Cute phone though.
message balls?
FFS This isnt nokias flagship, so dont be saying its bad or anything, cauz tbh its very compelling for its price and will dominate its section of the market.
Nokia X5 look like Motorola FLIPOUT.
