Starbucks sets its own Independence Day: free WiFi for all starting July 1st
Starbucks has been providing gratis WiFi to iPhone users and AT&T subscribers for years now, but everyone else has been conveniently shunned. All that's fixing to change on the first of July, with the famed coffee shop announcing via Twitter that WiFi will be completely free to all patrons in around a fortnight. Show up, pop your collar, have a seat, look sexy, sip gently and initiate a single click to get online. It'll be as easy as blowing $7 for a warmed beverage that you've never been too fond of, anyway.

hay guizse, I hear it costs $10 for a cup of coffee at starbucks zomg lol
@UnixSystemsEngineer
I also heard that this same $10 cup of coffee lost in a competition against a $2 McDonald's Coffee.. lolz lolz.
It's not a bad place to get a fairly decent and consistent cup of coffee, especially in unfamiliar places. $2 for a 20 oz. cup isn't out of the way price wise either.
@johnmc
say what?.
here is about $7 a oz.
Actually it's practically free now. You just have to buy one drink (any price) per month, for 2 hours of internet per day. (Although I've never been disconnected after the 2 hours...)
You just need to have a registered starbucks card (free) that you use to make the purchase. (And if you do have a registered starbucks cards, all those purchases are accumulating points towards free drinks...)
Lucky guys. Starbucks in Germany recently moved away from Deutsche Telekom to British Telecom, which is a pity because when they used Deutsche Telekom as their Wi-Fi provider, all iPhone users where able to use it for free and with automatic login. Now, it's free only for one hour and you have to go to this annoying login page first.
Maybe this'll finally usher in the era of free WiFi we've been waiting for. This forces places like Peet's to start offering free WiFi too. It's only a matter of time before every coffeehouse and cafe will have to offer it. But then again, I've been saying that for 10 years and it hasn't happened yet. Here's to hoping.
Still nothing on AT&T investigation.
Heh. Reminds me when me and my friends had to do a project and went to a Starbucks-ish coffee-shop, bought the most petite thing you could get, and made it our little office.
Anyways, this sounds fairly great if you ask me. :]
I go to the Starbucks in the Barns & Nobel, wifi and first cup of coffee is free! Get hour free of any ebook too! You can't go wrong with free!
In Egypt, it's been free (as well as in other restaurants and coffeeshops) since forever.
bout damn time ... i been goin to Barnes & Noble and Borders for coffee becuz of free wifi.
Im self employed and sometime go to a local coffee shop or cafe to work. And no, i dont have a Mac...Im either with my Dell Latitude E6400, or Thinkpad T500. Sometimes its nice to get out of the home office and see some people and commotion around you, even if its a coffee shop.
OMG! You saw that Family Guy episode with the two guys working on their laptops in Starbucks too!?!? That was SOOOOO super funny! Good for you for remembering that joke.
Good for Starbucks. Good for us. I don't know how people could complain about this...then again trolls are never happy and this likely gives them memories of some hipster who uses a MacBook pro and never bothered them, yet they hate him anyways because he just looks like a douche. Yeah that guy, trolls hate him and starbucks because of that guy.
This is great. Now fix my iPad so it stays connected to wifi hotspots.
Free WiFi so we can plan our response to the alien invasion?
That kind of Independence Day?!
I dunno. I never want to connect to an un-encrypted wifi.
Will this be international?
JULY 1st!! CANADA DAY!
Imagine the amount of information Google can gather when they pass by a starbucks.
Well this is a step in the right direction to justify the outrageous price for their (sub-standard) "coffee".
@sighclops where is $1.75 an outrageous price for a cup of coffee?
@Tagbert
You've obviously never been to an outlet overseas...
(hint: I'm not from the US)
I wonder, will it be free for everyone (ie people will sit outside and use the wifi) or do you have to buy something and get a "wifi code" like some places do?
Great move by them. Will give them a boost in sales
WiFi has been free to EVERYONE at Starbucks for YEARS!
If you buy a Starbucks card and just use it, you get free WiFi. I just recharged my Starbucks card, use it once every 30 days and I get free WiFi.
This is not news and is not accurate.
Awh. I suddenly won't feel special when I walk pass a starbucks and see I'm on wifi anymore
smart move to ditch the pathetic ATT starbucks... Now if we could only get Apple to follow... Apple.. Are you listening??
It's always been free here in Mexico.
