Xbox 360 250GB first unboxing!
We've unboxed our first 250GB Xbox 360 (the Xbox 360 'Slim' to the layman) and we've gotta tell you: it felt good. Stand by for more shots.
Update: Here they are, we've got video on the way as well. Here are some initial thoughts:
Update: Here they are, we've got video on the way as well. Here are some initial thoughts:
- The touch sensitive buttons quickly asserted themselves as not-the-best-thing-ever when we were unable to tell if we'd turned the Xbox on under the bright lights of Microsoft's setup. We're sure we'd see the green glow easily in our dark entertainment center at home, but it's a small little inconvenience -- one that PS3 owners are well aware of.
- The touch sensitive eject button isn't so bad, because the tray seems uber fast -- we didn't clock it, but we'd say it pops out faster than our existing Xbox.
- The Xbox feels just about as heavy as the existing Xbox, although the power adapter is smaller and much lighter.
- We booted up Alan Wake and while we were in a relatively loud room, we didn't find the Xbox to be loud at all. We'll have to get it in the labs to see how it stacks up with the original, but Microsoft obviously had noise pollution in its sights here. They worked directly with the drive manufacturer to reduce every source of noise (including air turbulence!), and dub their accomplishment "whisper quiet."
- This is a personal opinion, but we think it looks pretty badass in person, though not at all a wild shift from the existing look.

@foxh8er, why grow up? None of the other journalists have...
ABOUT TIME MICROSOFT.
Power consumption sticker appears to read:
12V @ 10.81 A, 5V & 1A (or maybe 10.61A), total = ~135 watts max.
wait woa was that displayport on the back?????? thats not a usb port, its display port holy shit
@sbvikings30, no, it's not DisplayPort. It's a special port for powering the Kinect thingy. (Older 360s will require a separate AC adapter for Kinect.)
No pack in HDMI cable and they are still using proprietary hard drives. FAIL.
Does this new Xbox slim come with the Valhalla chip?
@xsgamer
yes

@kasia
Sweet... thanks
For the love of humanity why the piano black finish? I hate it on my ps3. I hate it one my laptop. What makes them think I would like it on my 360?
@blake101jbe
Then why'd you keep buying things that way?
@runan22 I wished that I had a choice with the laptop (sadly I didn't at the time but I made my point known to the bestbuy people about it). My next machine will not have any for sure. Btw, sorry for delayed response.
Data transfer cord will retail for $19.99, and NOT be packed in with the slim. The Elite data transfer cord will work also.
does this work as a windows media center extender with windows 7 broadcasting HD quality?
Composite cable? In 2010? Really?
What I want to know is if the HDMI is 1.3 on this new 360.
@Happy - Wont matter, you can update between different HDMI standards via the internet (just firmware at the end of the day). Same happens with the PS3, as bluray standards vary the PS3 can be updated.
No bluray no buy. Trying to still distribute high-def games via the DVD format thus forcing game developers to shorten many scenes and in some case removing items from view to save space is fail for me.
Benifits of new Sku 360, repotedly quieter built in wifi and 250gig hdd and dedicated Kintec or whatever it's called port. Current elit stanard hdd is 120gig with no wifi and as loud as a Boeing 747 unless you play games from hdd which lowers the noise to a truck engine. Oh and if you adopt the Kintec then you will need a spare USB port and power socket. Personally I like the new Xbox and will be trading my old one in as soon as shops have them in stock.
@GiftedGimp
Actually you don't need a spare power socket if you buy the slim. You only need it if you are using Kinect on a non-slim 360;
That thing is fugly.
Hmmm I wonder if this is Microsoft's strategy to extend Xbox 360's lifespan cuz it looks like it.
Why did they get rid of the hdmi cable!?! It probably costs them a dollar to put one in with the console. And im glad they finally integrated wifi, their $100 adapters really pissed me off.
@engadget123
360 has never come with an HDMI cable.
@Folen I believe that when the Elite first came out, it came with an HDMI cable for a while, until MS rearranged the bundles and took it out.
@CityZen
Nope got my 1st Elite on Launch day, and 2 since, and there has never been an HDMI cable.
@Folen I'm quite positive the Xbox 360 Elite came with an HDMI cable at some point during its life. Otherwise, why would MS say this:
http://support.xbox.com/support/en/us/xbox360/hardware/accessories/av/hdmicable.aspx
"The Xbox 360 HDMI Cable , included with the Xbox 360 Elite system or sold separately, ..."
I particularly remember the grumbling on Engadget when they removed it from the package.
@Folen.... my resident evil xbox 360 elite sure as hell came with a hdmi cable. a hd audio cable and hd component cables. so ya!!! your wrong, im actually using that microsoft branded hdmi cable to this day on my dell zino hd, the computer im rely to you on.
@CityZen.............na man, i totally got component,hdmi, hd audi cables with my RED resident evil xbox 360 elite. it also had the updated mother board. it is sooooooooo damn silent. i hear nothing. i actually sold my ps3 because it was so damn loud in comparison. my 60 gig ps3 was so damn loud, it was annoying. sold it on craigslist with the quickness.
the real question is what kind of pixel density were they using to print this thing
It took MS long enough for them to get a new Xbox 360 slim. But just recently read SONY going to release 250GB and 500 GB.
I will buy this immediately, I just hope it is reliable... there I said it.
One more thing. too bad MS didn't still use a universal SATA Hard Drive. Still have to buy their own brand . At least they change their design but still take them too long
@Inspector Gadget80 Looking at the video, you can see that there's a regular SATA connector on the drive unit. What remains to be seen is if the drive inside has custom firmware or not.
For those wondering about the IR sensor, the Q&A in the description of this youtube video says it's combined with the sync/bind button on the front. I don't know who was answering the questions, but they seem like they are real answers from a MS person.

It pisses me off that the PS3 finally includes HD connections (HDMI) and the 360 takes away component cables. I know it's been that way for a while but still ridiculous. Otherwise, this thing looks slick!
When they replace the arcade 360with this one they need to take the but in wifi out, smaller hard drive, and make it bigger so you don't have a fucking power brick.
The only thing I care about is the new look, quiet, better ventalation, and I thought there would be no power brick. Wifi is pointless to me because I all ready have an Ethernet cable plugged into mine, why on earth would I switch to wifi, cable is always faster and more reliable. Hard drive needs more space options.
Hopefully MS has some more tricks up there sleave for the arcade version because this new xbox falls short.
Seriously, why would they focus on making it smaller when most people stick it on a shelf under their tv and never move it. This isn't a device meant for portability. I would rather it get bigger and have better airflow and a COMPLETELY integrated power unit.
No HD cables seriously?! Why? They're so cheap!
And what's the AUX port...looks like a HTC USB except not the mini type..the normal type.
why you didn't disassemble it? what chipset is used for wifi?
I just don't get it, is the way you unbox stuff different from others or what? These days, I've seen many people purposely showed the process of unboxing new gears. Can't u just put them on the desk nicely and make a simple review?
hmmm... i kind of have mixed opinions about this.... looks neat and i love built in wi-fi, HDMI cable doesnt really bother me but a few things really disappoint me...
1) power brick still there after 5 years.. dont we advance in technology more than that?
2) it's not any slimmer
3) new hard drive again, and again, specific to xbox only
Eh, just because i love the latest gadgets, i'll probably end up buying one anyways.
Anyone else notice "XBOX 360 S CONSOLE" clearly written on the back at 2:45?
I think we've got a solid name here other than "XBOX 360 250GB"
Same "S" was added to the original Xbox's Controller refresh.
@shznt
S as in Stealth-unit!
nice job guys
Well it's nice to see it get an update - but seriously, this is an Alienware PC meets Fat PS3... I mean - piano black gloss with chrome accents, touch-sensitive buttons, drive bay door with pull out drive tray, loads of USB ports, built-in WiFi... Haven't we been here before, 3years ago?
Shame MS still don't know how to integrate a PSU and maintain thermal stability though...
Its good going to sleep knowing the world is safe from Sony
This new design looks great. Not to mention that the new disk drive isn't incredibly loud. Now I don't feel the need to install every game I play on my 20GB HDD. Thank God for Microsoft allowing USB Flash Drives...
I think I know what I want for Christmas now. I wouldn't go for this normally, but I play the hell out of the 360. Plus this new 360 is short, so it's easy to pack.
i got a question:
whats the power input?
can i take it oversees?
thanks
aww man i thought they would get rid of that power brick!
