Apple suggesting you head into a store if things aren't working out online
Oh, to be tapped into the conference call going on between Apple's and AT&T's server tech teams right now!
Update: Seems folks have been seeing this message intermittently since the wee hours -- first time we've seen it here, but then again, we've seen no fewer than five or six unique failure modes today. Quite a sight.

@soypancho
Guys, the Apple Store App did NOT work. It indicated I had a reservation to pickup a black 32gb iPhone on the 24th, but when I checked online, my reservation wasn't there. I called to confirm and they indicated my reservation wasn't there and to keep trying until I received an email confirmation. I just got my preorder through on the website though. Just now! Now I have to see if I can have change the shipping address to my office...
Keep trying.
@thetown
shit...I just got an email confirmation to pickup my reserved iphone at the SF Apple Store...I guess the app does work!
Gonna remove Techmeme from my top sites. Leading with hyperbolic, hysterical, hogwash headlines from Gizmodo just not cool. I mean these guys should not pretend to be journalists. The launch could have gone smoother, but guess what? If you want an iphone4 you are gonna get one, maybe not on the 24th but soon thereafter.
AT&T… Americans Tortured & Tested for something that actually works.
I'm a little confused. Does it matter if I buy it from AT&T online or Apple online? I got mine from the Apple online store and just received the confirmation email. Does this mean I am good to go?
Tried to do an online pre order all dayl, literally, got as far as the add to cart option but no further. Looks like i too am doing an in store pickup.
I tried about 15 minutes ago and finally got through on Apple's website! WooHoo! Pre-ordered 16GB.Only been trying since 4am this morning. Got a confirmation # and everything. Looks like they figured some shit out finally.
@tivoaddict congratz I finally got mine too 14 hrs later
@tivoaddict I don't know that they figured anything out. I think the order rate just finally went down once people heard that they were sold out and the dates started pushing out... The whole system was w-a-y more responsive just now. Still took a while but not acting like it was earlier. Course I'm not going to see one till Jul 6th-8th...
Finally got mine at like 6 EST. Only took 17 hours, right? 32GB Black, baby.
Anyone else successfully go through all steps to reserve phones in-store, get the confirmation screen, but NOT receive ANY confirmation email? Reserved over an hour ago - still nothing in my inbox. . .
This whole pre order exp. Was terrible epic fail
Persevere! It took *FOREVER* to get the pre-order dance to go all the way though, but apple site is *still* allowing for pre-orders amidst rampent shenanananananagans
As usual AT&T sucks. Never had a problem with a web page on the apple store (a little slow sure, but no unreachable or not responding errors there). Only on the pages where they would contact AT&T to check your eligibility etc. Those always spun the fabulous wheel of death and then after several minutes would time out and you had to start again. Or the inactive session thing would kick you out. Or the other 8 errors I saw...
Why is it that I have an overwhelming desire to call EVERY person here that says they are switching to an Android phone because they couldn't get an iPhone a liar! Fact is if you had an ounce of patience. You could just wait and get one after the dust settles.
It's very common and expected when this kind of Gadgets come out. You can't prepare yourself for 3/10 million hits when from the next week, hits will come down to 30k-100K hits. If you buy more servers to share the load of the launch day, what will you do next week? Sell them or throw these $10K units away.
BTW: I will not mind if they throw one, in my direction.
I, too, was relieved when I finally got my order through yesterday on the AT&T site. No confirmation e-mail, but I had my confirmation and order number from the website. Fast forward to this morning -- e-mail from AT&T telling me my order was cancelled because they were, "either unable to verify the information you provided or you have exceeded the number of lines of service that we allow customers to purchase online." (I have only one line.) Trying to check the order status myself online generated an error message.
Called customer service. A very pleasant and helpful rep tracked down my order, but learned that it was associated with a different order number than what I had! While on the phone with her, I tried verifying the status myself online with the new number -- it worked. So far, my order is "in progress".
So Apple is saying if I wanted to buy their POS phone, I should drive 130 miles? They can go to Hell! I'm sorry. I'm just venting a little frustration that they have the gull to tell me to drive 130 miles to get an over-hyped phone I don't want.
