iPhone 4 pre-orderers overwhelm servers, world on the brink of ending
Look up at the sky -- is it falling? It sure seems as if that kind of doom is imminent, at least if this whole iPhone 4 pre-order situation is any indication of future tragedy. We've received hundreds of tips this morning from friends near and far that iPhone 4 pre-orders aren't going through, though a few of us here on staff were able to get a confirmation during the wee hours of the morning. From AT&T in the US to O2 over in the UK, it seems that just about everyone ambling to get their name on a future iPhone 4 is experiencing a great deal of frustration. AT&T's servers seem to be completely hosed here in America, and since Apple's own online order process has to ping those to check on your contract status, neither option is... um, working. Those who decided to line up at a local store are facing similar issues; employees aren't even able to fully process pre-orders in store due to systems being overwhelmed, and no one seems to exactly know when things will be back to normal. And you thought the most enraging part of this was the inability to select a white model. Let us know how your experience has been in the poll and comments below, won't you?
Update: So, it sounds like Best Buy is taking pre-orders (even for white units), but chances are remarkably high that you're not actually getting in any line. Still, it's a working option for the moment. In other news, the Apple Store app is seeming to allow iPhone 4 orders, but it looks as if they're reserving off-contract phones (read: full price ones), so we'd only recommend this avenue if you enjoy things like "arguing about contract dates" and "yelling at brick walls." We're guessing you'll be doing both on the 24th.

| Yep! Got in right after they went online! Lucky me! | |

| Yes, but it took more patience than I knew I had. | |
| No way, but I'm still trying. And crying. | |
| No, and I don't even care any more. EVO 4G here I come! | |
| Oh, snap -- pre-orders went live today?! |

Radio shack is sold out of all of the pre-order PINs
Guess I got lucky. Went to Best Buy and preordered there, not too busy and got in and out in about 5 minutes. Good luck to those of you ordered online. Hope you get your preorders.
I "reserved" a phone via the Apple Store app this afternoon. For a while I was a bit concerned it didn't actually do anything even though I did get an email confirmation.
I'm able to get through the Apple store website consistently now. The first time I tried to "reserve" a phone for pickup it told me I already had one reserved. For kicks I went through the process again and now it says no more reserved phones available.
Apple Retail Store
Currently, there are no reservations available. But you can still pick up an iPhone on a first-come, first-served basis at your favorite Apple Retail Store starting at 7 a.m. on June 24. And since you’ve already set up your account online, you’ll save time when you stop by the store.
Went to the AT&T store today to preorder the new IPHONE 4 and I pulled out my debit card to pay and the representative told me they are not accepting debit or cash to order the new iphone, then he tells me that no one, not even apple will accept it. So I got online and ordered it on apple.com and paid with my debit. Apple took my debit card. Anybody know what that was all about?????
Where is the "gonna wait for Moto X" poll response?
@Unverified User
Because this doesn't have anything to do with Motorola? Try reading the name of the article next time, nice try though.
@ddddd
Ummm actually most people who are getting these are able to keep their unlimited data, it's only new customers who get either the 200mb or 2gb data plan options.
I ordered thru the app store, got an email confirmation.
Went to the Apple Store after work just to make sure. Confirmed my name is on the reserved list. Also confirmed the full price on the email means nothing and you can go on 6/24 anytime b4 closing to pick one up.
Ok so I am one of the lucky people that actually got through yesterday after 4+ hours of trying to pre-order. I get my confirmation e-mail and get this $hit...
This little note was at the bottom of my invoice...
*In CA, MA and RI sales tax is collected on the unbundled price of the iPhone.
How can they possibly charge me tax on $699 when I am playing only $299 under a new contract??? That is complete BS and if I would have known then I would have ordered on for pick up in a NH store with NO SALES TAX. What a freaking JOKE!!!
How about "I haven't pre-ordered because AT&T doesn't want me to upgrade."?
i don't understand...My brother woke me up for work yesterday the 15th at 6am EST...I got up got dress and thought "hey lemme do my pre order" I logged into AT&T selected my number and selected upgrade...i even second guessed and closed out Firefox then decided "yeah i will get it" logged back in and did my pre order. Not a single issue occurred for me, no lagging on the page. it was so easy, i don't know why people couldn't get theirs...i literally just decided in the morning and got it without a hitch or even a hiccup...AT&T's website actually loaded FASTER then Engadget did haha
