pre-order situation is any indication of future tragedy. We've received hundreds of tips this morning from friends near and far that
iPhone 4 pre-orders aren't going through, though a few of us here on staff were able to get a confirmation during the wee hours of the morning. From AT&T in the US to O2 over in the UK, it seems that just about everyone ambling to get their name on a future iPhone 4 is experiencing a great deal of frustration. AT&T's servers seem to be completely hosed here in America, and since Apple's own online order process has to ping those to check on your contract status, neither option is... um,
working. Those who decided to line up at a local store are facing similar issues; employees aren't even able to fully process pre-orders in store due to systems being overwhelmed, and no one seems to exactly know when things will be back to normal. And you thought the most enraging part of this was the
inability to select a white model. Let us know how your experience has been in the poll and comments below, won't you?
Update: So, it sounds like Best Buy is taking pre-orders (even for white units), but chances are remarkably high that you're not actually getting in any line. Still, it's a working option for the moment. In other news, the Apple Store app is seeming to allow iPhone 4 orders, but it looks as if they're reserving off-contract phones (read: full price ones), so we'd only recommend this avenue if you enjoy things like "arguing about contract dates" and "yelling at brick walls." We're guessing you'll be doing both on the 24th.

anyone else seeing that apple's pre order page changed a bit..seems to check something before sending you to the 'Processing Information' screen..

I was able to reserve a 32gb black iPhone 4 through the apple store app on my 3g. That was the only thing that worked after trying for three hours.
WTF!! Still can't place an order on Apples site.
My wife finally got through now. I guess the servers are picking up the slack.
found solution, if you have a ipad, iphone or itouch
Go download apple store app
Select store,
Then select iphone 4
When you see upgrade or new line
Reguardless of upgrade or what, select new line
This will then ask you for your apple id password,
Imput this
This will then confirm your reservation for the phone you picked.
I have a screen shot to show that it works
This will place the phone on hold in your name, when you get to the store just do the upgrade, i called the store and they said this will work

Upon successfully pre-ordering through Apple, do you actually get an order #? I got to the final reservation page but never received a confirmation email and my order isn't showing up in my account.

Yes you do. Most people haven't gotten their email confirmation yet so it will like be till later in the day.
Store manager asked me for additional information (my home address), then he asked if i wanted 16 or 32gb, then asked if i wanted white or black. He also asked if i would mind getting the white in case they can't get black - i said sure why not.
They'll have more info around 1pm CST.

Just managed to get the order through on the AT&T site (upgrade) and had no problems. This is after about 3 hours of trying on Apple's site. Maybe the upgrade check servers are down but the AT&T order servers are up? Who knows, just glad the headache is over.
Should have had another option in the poll: Pre-ordered at Best Buy with ease and comfort!

Apple store opened back up a few minutes after 1am Pacific time. Got on and got mine!

Is it just me, or is Apple waiving $18 upgrade fee while AT&T is charging it?? When I made some progress earlier this AM, Apple waived it, but AT&T-direct was charging it on checkout page. Might just wait 'till the madness calms and same myself a few bucks through Apple.

Yes, AT&T was trying to charge me the $18 even though they confirmed I could upgrade and waive the fee. I never did get my order processed through AT&T but I did through apple and they didn't charge me anything but tax!
To all you panicking fanboys concerned about preorder / willing to line up for an iPhone 4:
This is not a scarce product, just calm down, there will not be a shortage. Use your brains....
@Heathen My brain wants to ask you what material evidence you can provide in support of your statement that "this is not a scarce product". Do you have access to both Apple's production numbers and the number of customers desiring the product? "Scarce" would be defined by comparing the two, correct?

Scarce would mean a limited / finite quantity with no ongoing production. The only scarcity this launch will experience will be manufactured by Apple to generate buzz (and muppets like you perpetuate this stupidity).
I used the app store / new line method and it worked! It took about 10 minutes to get my confirmation email from Apple though.
Yep, using the "Apple Store" app for an in-store reservation is the way to go. It gave me a warning that it couldn't confirm my upgrade eligibility but confirmed the reservation and I got the confirmation email in about 5 minutes. Good luck.

YES BUT YOU ARE NOT PRE-ORDERING IT LIKE THAT. THAT IS ONLY A RESERVATION, WIch doesn't guarantee you get one on launch day the 24th.

According to what I have been finding... they hold a reserved phone for you the entire day of the 24th. If you don't pick it up they will give it away the next day. The only way you wouldn't get one, is if the entire store didn't get any due to delivery issues.

I ordered my phone 1 hour ago. got a confirmation number form AT&T site. never got an email though.
I called AT&T and what they telling me is:
Order ID doesn't guaranty order. Email which I never received apparently should have a terms and conditions which i suppose to accept, only after that my order will be confirmed. Really, any one else has the same issues?

I never got an email from att also but checked my order status on their website and shows the iphone 4 and also my CC card has the transaction pending.
I hope those of you who reserved it at your local Apple Store are ready to be waiting on a huge line to get it. I'm still gonna wait for the online pre-orders to actually work.
Easiest way to pre-order. Use the iPhone Apple Store app. It takes about 2-5 minutes and it basically pulls your iTunes info. So you need to put in your pw and last four digits of your SS but it pre-orders it for you.
@Winky No. It DOES NOT. It reserves it. Thats it. It does NOT use the Pre-Order option when you go through the App store App. Jesus get it right people.

I'd like to pick one up without a contract, and while I saw the pricing mentioned on every site, I don't see a way to do it. Even the Apple site says in the FAQ that a 2 year contract is required. What gives?!
Tried for an hour this morning. Ended up just going to Best Buy where I pre ordered two white ones. I was the only person there.

Yep, me too....only one at Best Buy - pre-ordered a 32G Black. I didn't want to push my luck in case the white ones weren't out by the 24th.
Right now making a reservation is the easiest way to go but would hate to be you when you go pick it up at the store. Patience!
I got mine using the Apple Store app... but it says $699 for the 32gb and I know for a fact that I'm eligible for a standard upgrade.

I did the same thing and my receipt also says $699... probably because that's the actual price of the phone from apple but the discounts will be applied when you actually go to purchase it (pick it up)
@sirwantsalot Exactly. When I ordered the 3GS last year the packing invoice showed $699 even though I paid $299. Must be an accounting thing.
so question for those who actually got an Iphone through ATT today. I checked my account and they billed me already in the amount of like 211.78 although the email i received said my subtotal was 227.00 and i would not be billed until the phone was shipped. anyone have this happen to them? i am tempted to call, but no way i am going to wait on hold. if the charge is still there tomorrow i think i will call.

@7screws I got mine through ATT and the receipt said it was charging me for the phone and then for my monthly data(even though its just an upgrade) but after reading some comments i checked my credit card and nothing has been charged yet.
