@KarlW
OSX is based off open-source in case you didn't know moron. So is much of the software running on OSX, and the Safari browser has it's roots in open-source. Much of the system is supported by a community of programmers that Apple leach off of.
@loadoftoad Apple isn't in the business of making drivers for other OSes, even if Apple's OS is based off of open-source code. Moron.
Why is this news?
Everytime Microsoft releases an update, it isn't recorded...
So... why?
@Archon wait till they manage to put quicktime 64 bits out...oh wait.
Mine was 312' maybe because I have Safari 5? It is included if you don't have it and it was not a push update. I really like the Reader feature in Safari 5. Good stuff!
@cwm11976
I have Safari 5 too,
I checked for updates yesterday and today afternoon but, was telling me no more new update.
And now 641 MB update...!!!
I have MacBook Pro Core i7, So they have fixed heating problem in Core i7 laptop...may be....??
@imsatasia
Possibly. I have the late 2009 Macbook Pro, so that could be the difference. Hmmmmmmm......
Maybe now my Macbook Pro can run Crysis
I installed it and got a kernel panic during the install. Great!
Installed this on my hackintosh, went pretty well but wow what a bloated update. Why is it when you update itunes or OSx it's always somewhere up toward 100mb? This update being 300 mb and so little has really been added? Have Apple never heard of polling a computer for what updates are already installed and send only whats needed instead of sending entire packages? Poor programming and not well thought out at all. More and more regularly it seems almost every update is requiring a reboot too, understandable on an OS update but my last update a few weeks back was for itunes and it also needed an updates.... Why does my media player need to restart the entire OS?
@loadoftoad
It's not bad programming -- it's just how they decide to package it. Most of the guys writing the code have no say in that. The differences in updating with a diff/patch versus delete/replace can be debated so why not focus on the substance of the issue instead of ignorantly attacking the guys slaving away fixing bugs and writing code? They pass their stuff off to someone who packages it based on whatever policies Apple has internally on deploying patches. Even the people doing the packaging aren't bad at their jobs or incompetent they're just following a procedure.
@UptownDonkey
I see alot of ineffecient bloat is what I see because of this so called 'procedure' you speak of. Nothing really included in this update but a bunch of really small bug fixes that should not be 300mb. There was no features added, and I had already downloaded safari 5 days back (which was another 80mb download - why does a browser need 80mb?). Looks like apple is way too focused on ipad/iphone and doesnt really care about their computers much.
@loadoftoad iTunes updates don't just update iTunes. They include DRM updates to Core Audio etc.
Why the restart? I suspect you would be complaining if your mac suddenly kernel panicked or your audio drivers stopped working... It's a precaution. It takes 2 minutes of your life. Go for a walk or something.
@hob 2 minutes? Wow. Thats a long time.
mine is 951mb
yikes...
They are giving you just what you need. So don't complain about the size blaming it on poor programming. 315mb here for a 2009 Macbook pro 13". Safari 5 is not installed.
@Shanebenn
It is poor programming, nothing that I can see has been added so why is it 300mb? I downloaded the safari 5 update days ago. Looks like apple is too focused on iphone/ipad and not on their computers; these OS updates are looking bare feature-wise and bloated.
@loadoftoad Just because you can't see what the changes are doesn't mean they're not there. You're clearly not a programmer, so why are you passing judgement on those responsible for creating the fixes? Apple prefers not to just patch software, but rather to completely replace the binaries. That's why the download is so large. It has nothing to do with inefficient programming. You'd do well to shut up about this, you're making a total fool out of yourself.
@loadoftoad They are minor bug fix releases. Of course there are no new features. Dummy.
This took so long to come and delivers so little. It pisses me off that apple are all about bloody iOS these days, god only knows when and what 10.7 will be
Anyone experienced any nifty changes post upgrade?
@Professor Tom There's a new hidden functionality added! Now my late 2009 MBP doubles as a hand heater/oven. Seriously now, my MBP gets really hot after this update(about 10 degrees hotter).
With any luck this will fix the atrocious wireless performance/dropping in SL. Under Bootcamped Vista things work just fine.
@frankcarmody
When Vista works better you know things have gone totally wrong. Time for apple to wake up and focus a little more on their computers and not so much on the ipad/iphone toys.
@loadoftoad I completely agree with you. Wireless performance is so important on a notebook. It's one of those things that absolutely has to work.
The past 5 months I've been using a USB dongle for 3G because wifi is *still* broken in SL.
Unbelievable.
@frankcarmody
Apple has always had problems getting wireless to work, I remember back with Tiger the wifi would drop all the time on my macbook. I use a hackintosh now so am using ethernet so don't know the status of the wifi. But I can tell you their bluetooth stack is also poor and drops all the time when you have a keyboard/mouse connected.
It's not a problem with the hardware either because it worked fine in Windows XP for me (back when I had a macbook - Tiger), bluetooth worked under XP great too. Apple just can't write proper wireless drivers/software.
I just downloaded the update and in the activity monitor it seems that with the same programs running on my 8 gig imac, there is a LOT more free memory. I have never seen so much "green" with about 2/3 of the memory free even with several things running at once.
I hear there's no video drivers so the fps in Source games still suck.
@Timerider Funny...because I hear that source games suck on their own....
This is so exciting I just snarfed my chocolate milk. Now I'm going to drop everything and update my Mac.
Seriously. Minor software updates that don't add any functionality or anything are just annoying. So why are they deemed important, popular tech news?
I chalk it up to AFS. Apple Fetish Syndrome.
Seriously, I'm not trying to knock anyone here but I say the real story behind this story has nothing to do with software updates. It has to do with our weird obsession with machined aluminum and black turtlenecks.
STILL no TRIM support?
Sigh...
installed on my MBP 17" core i7 and it was about 650 meg... it went to install, logged everything out, and went to the blue loading screen and just sat there for about 15 minutes with the spinning loading icon on the screen.
I turned it off and back on and all appears fine, os updated and all, but somehow i don't think it was supposed to do that.
Bugs and glitches? Kind of goes against the whole "Macs just work" thing doesn't it? Mine didn't just work. I guess it wasn't just me.
You know what, you BOUGHT A MAC so don't complain! At least I won my Macbook. Coming into a previously Windows/Linux/ESX home I have a right to complain!!
@malibu1234 that's funny. i won my mac mini last year. i bought the mac for the hardware though, not the software. i wanted something small in form factor with a core i7 so i could write software on it. if there had been a better piece of hardware available that fit those needs, i would've bought that instead.
i have 5 windows 7 machines in my house (this MBP included) and 2 macs. I'll complain all I want ;)
But I thought Windows was the only one with bugs and glitches and security flaws... At least it was what Apple used to advertise wasn't it?
I've been waiting for this update
@d4mi4n
I know right?! Most usefull update! :D
Wow. Apple FINALLY fixed the smb issue connecting to NAS. Unreal. Now all they have to do is come up with a half-decent filesystem browser. That Finder POS should be renamed "Still Lost"
Okay, so all 10 Mac users go get that update. Well, if you can figure out how. I know you all have a tough time using computers... :-p
Let's hope this fixes the huge bug in the new macbook pros. The problem seems to occur most often on the new i5/i7 machines.
There's a 40page thread with over 450 replies on the mac support website from people complaining about the macbooks "freezing" for no reason at all. People say the problem could be the graphics switching from integrated to discrete. People have sent bug reports to apple with no reply. Let's hope this release fixes the issue.

If I see one more Windows fanboy say "hay i though macs wear better then windoze because they didn’t need updates hiyuc hiyuc" I'll punch a zombie in the face.
Probably going to get horribly downrated for this, but why is a Mac OS update newsworthy?I have no problem with it being posted, I just think they should mention the updates for other OS's if they mention Apple's
@Chewy71:
Please.

I have frequently had problems with my safari browser, Crashing,slow down etc.
Other than this, what sort of different updates does it have, apart from the usual photobooth,imovie,ichat etc
I heard - but haven't tested - that this update also added support for tethering in Aperture 3 for high end canon pro level camera. 7d, 5d MarkII, 1 Ds Mark III and 1D Mark IV
I downloaded this update and the first one was corrupted. The second time worked. Safari 5 isn't all that. Version 4 was faster and Firefox is still much faster. Where do they get that it's the fastest?
Anyone else experiencing issues with Cinema Display's blinking sporadically when its plugged into my MacBook Pro.
Anyway to revert back to 10.6.3 once ive upgraded.
