Samsung Galaxy Beam: world's first Android projector phone on sale in July
Ah, here we go, Samsung's other cellphone with an integrated projector just got an official launch date. The Galaxy Beam (codename: Halo) with its 3.7-inch Super AMOLED display is now slated to hit Singapore in July. That means that the European and broader launch across Asia should be just around the corner if Samsung's claims from Feburary hold true. At launch, the world's first Android phone with a built-in DLP pico projector will be served version 2.1 of Google's confectionary delight. Specwise, we're talking 7.2Mbps HSPA data on 900/1900/2100MHz and quad-band GSM/EDGE, Bluetooth 3.0, 802.11n WiFi, an 8 megapixel autofocus camera with flash (front-facing VGA) and HD video recording, A-GPS, FM Radio, and an 1,800mAH battery. Memory is confusingly listed as "4Gb + 2Gb + 1Gb + 16Gb MoviNAND" made worse by no mention of microSD though it was definitely there when we went hands-on with Beam at Mobile World Congress. Specs after the break.

1800mah! Now that's long lasting :)
How come the U.S. is always the last to get the good hardware?
@Sad Sack
Because you Blackberrys :)
@Sad Sack
Last, bloody hell, you guys have the Evo, incredible and a few more handsets and we have none in the UK :@
@Sad Sack
Are you actually serious?
@dsk True, true
@Stotherd
I was thinking about the Galaxy S and the Dell Streak, subsidized by a Big Four carrier.
@dsk
In Belgium we don't have the any Palm phones or Motorola Phones and only a few HTC models. We are lucky we can even get an iPhone here.
And you start the dare whining because of one lousy projector phone. COMMON!
@Andrew Jones But they're Canadian!!!
@Sad Sack We don't build anything in the US anymore. We outsource almost everything to other nations. If we built them here, we have more cool stuff here and first.
That would change if we required the "FLAG" of the nation building the product on each of the items rather than a hard to see "Made in China" sticker or impression, we would build more stuff in the US with a quickness.
This is the beginning of new era
@ZeCoder
No this is the beginning of wallet raping
I really don't see a big value in this technology... can worth it for "business men" always in the need of powerpoint presentation, but usually convention rooms are BIG and need big projectors...
@mex .. The problem is that almost all conference rooms either have a projector or have easy access to one.
I really don't understand the use for this technology.
@mex
Ditto... same for digital cameras with a projector (a la Nikon).
@taligent It'll be as useful an as used as video chat.... oh.
@mex I think it might be cool for projecting movies on the back of the airplane seat
@massradius
don't know... I think it's more handy to watch it on your screen, what if the seat of your flight company are dark purple for example? :)
@mex 1080p/720p video projected on a wall anywhere?
BOOM!
so...will this replace my regular stand-alone projector?
@aemengo
Oh yeah, definitely...and your 50" plasma TV, washing machine and microwave too. /sarcasm
With this thickness (almost 15 mm) I would have preferred a keyboard instead of the projector.
at first waited for beam but then realized getting GALAXY S and microvision's showwx laser projector is better choice/quality even it wouldnt be that compact (I hate dongles everywhere....)
What resolution is the pico projector? 480p?
Truth is, for business, this is not practical. Fixes and edits always need to be made to Powerpoint etc content on a laptop prior to meetings. However, for sales presentations (product shots and the like) and general funtertainment, this is great.
I am buying this.
SUPER AMOLED.
HUMMING BIRD
FRONT CAMERA.
PROJECTOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Damn. I thought the Galaxy S was this phone. Didn't realise they were 2 different phones! Now I don't know what to do...
I think the Galaxy S has FLAC and the Beam/Halo does not :( But the Beam/Halo has 8MP camera and Flash.
Hmm I guess the Beam/Halo is slightly better overall. But I really want FLAC!
doom day machine, samsung don't undrestand what they do! When RIAA see this they shit bricks :D
I think this eventually will be a cool thing to have, but these first few models are going to be disappointing.
Phone looks pretty thick to me. Might as well just carry around a real projector as big as that thing is.
Do they mention whether the projector bulb is replaceable or not? I wonder how long the bulb is supposed to last...?
I agree with all of the people who state that this thing has little utility right now...
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
samsung + android= "Wow, that's NOT a good deal!!!"
Has Samsung proven they will support their Android hardware for more than a month?
And why does this have a flash but the Galaxy S doesn't?
Ugh.
Cmon Samsung.
@Hussain Rahim The answer to your main question, no, but they haven't had enough sales to really make it great except for branding sake (obviously their brand sucks to those in the know). However, one bright side of things, is if the (2.2) tablet rumors are true then they should have a version of Touchwiz 3.0 running on Froyo which means it'll be easy to port over. Since they have been claiming for 6 months that they are starting to take smartphones seriously and are scared that they will start evaporating marketshare overall and never capture enough of the most lucrative market I continue to think they'll start supporting things. But people have been burned by more likely bets plenty of times...
This is just a waste of technology...
They should have used a laser projector instead of the traditional projectors with lenses. Who wants to focus the image on a phone?
So, this looks like my next phone/backup phone after the EVO. I'm guessing about $600 unlocked? Too bad the FF camera is only VGA, but this is a beast.
k this looks cool.. can we pair it with bluetooth headset... switch off the room lights and watch a cool movie.. :) :) with good resolution.. if its possible then i love it.. :)
Good luck getting froyo on this phone. 2.2 Is out and this phone isn't. Samsung behold 2 = stuck stuck at 1.6 ... Galaxy beam = effin projector and only hope to get the 2.2 upgrade. See how that pans out for them overseas
Yeah, it would be pretty awesome to project HQ dirty movies in my toilet. Kinda makes my Nexus One dumb. :(
