Nokia N8 meets Bluetooth mouse and keyboard, has a good time (video)
No, we're not revealing some great hidden feature here -- Nokias have been able to pair with Bluetooth devices since pretty much forever -- but throw a complete set of desktop implements together with the Finnish company's greatest new phone, and sparks of interest do fly. In this case, a pair of keen fellas have hooked a portable keyboard and a Logitech mouse up to the N8 and had some fun videotaping their exploits. If you're thinking this would make a pretty killer combination with the N8 plugged into an HDTV, well... you'd be right. Catch the video after the break.

Yep, it does.
@LCDBox
Damn, this is pretty tight! There is a reason why Nokia rules the phone market!
@LCDBox
This really makes me wonder what the N9 will be able to do...I mean, the N900 was at least a whole year ahead of the likes of Android and iPhone OS, although unpolished. The N9 being the first MeeGo phone, given the capabilities of the N8, should make for a Nerd's dream phone, fanboyism aside...
The N8 doesn't impress me, this has an ARM11 CPU like the first iPhone, a far cry from current high-end A8 SoCs like Snapdragon, and the OS is marginally better than Windows Mobile; tons of capabilities, poor usability, down rank me all you want but you know it's true,
there are some good specs on the N8 but it's hardly going to jump with the ranks of Android and iOS phones, let alone be a savior for Nokia
@JeremyBenthem
It doesn't impress you because it somehow manages to do things other OS's wish they could do on a lesser processor.
hmmmmm, don't know how I feel about that.
@JeremyBenthem
And yet this can do things that the current and new iPhone and the current and new android phones can. This OS utilizes each and every clock cycle which other OS's do not. Being faster does not mean better.
Idiot go back to your hole
@Mike Vick Its becUse of flip phones, and there was nothing better a few years ago, iPhone can do this in 5 days, and if your dumb enough to jailbreak, you can use a mouse too
@That guy 2
The simple fact that you have to jailbreak to get the functionality is enough for it to be left out of this discussion.
@JeremyBenthem
uh....the cell processor is an ARM11, but N8 has the best GPU in the industry - guess which processor is doing the heavy lifting?
@JeremyBenthem
When I saw the title, the first thing that popped into my head was "I wonder how far down in the comments I'll go before someone mentions the iPhone." The answer was "four posts." Congratulations, JeremyBenthem.
@naashak
And which gpu would that be (inside N8)?
Even Nokia doesn't tell the full specs yet.
BTW, it's also pushing 63% less pixels than, say iphone, so it'd better be fast at that lowly resolution, which imho, is one of N8's biggest failings.
It's just, so 2008...
WVGA res, where are you?
@vasra
640 x 360 on an AMOLED screen is fine for a 3.5" area as it gives a ppi well over 200. You know, quite a bit more dense than the 2009's 3GS's 163 ppi.
As for the GPU, I don't know what it is but given the published Open GL results it seems pretty good.
@vasra
WVGA is for the MeeGo phones - N900 has WVGA (and incidentally the highest pixel density before God Jobs came with his "Retina Display" gimmick).
The N8 processor also does a lot more than any iPhone/iPad processor - full multi-tasking not some limited suspend/resume stuff. Plus the N8 GPU got benchmarked and is about 4-5 times faster than its nearest rival. Whatever be the shortcomings of this phone, hardware clearly ain't it.
@vasra The GPU used is Broadcom BCM2727, you can find all its specs here: http://www.broadcom.com/products/Cellular/Mobile-Multimedia-Processors/BCM2727
@Mike Vick You have seen this http://bit.ly/dlbx1j haven't you?
@vasra "It's just, so 2008..." Get use to it. Their just phones for peeps sake.
@naashak
Hardware was never Nokia's problem it was always software and poor user interface design. Ya it's cool that you can pair with a BT keyboard but not practical, you should be able to get what you need done with the built in keyboard.
The average use doesn't need or want thousands of configurable options strewn throughout the OS.
@bl seriously you are missing the point, the point is that you hook this N8 up to your hdtv via the hdmi out and then you sit on your couch and use your phone like a mini computer
Brilliant , Nokia is back in business!
@HellFlyer
They've never left, it's just his is the first phone from them that really has the potential to appeal to the same crowd as the iPhone. Nokia has always been brilliant and years ahead of their time with so many features. The only thing they have not done well to this point is a capacitive touch screen phone. But since they cared about China (where writing in the native language is a million times easier on a resistive screen with a stylus) they have not really worked hard on a good capacitive screen and interface until recently.
@KC
Dunno, I tried writing my name in Chinese on my friend's iPhone and it wasn't really bad... in fact, without fingernails, I don't think I could write Chinese very easily on my 5800. Unless of course, you mean that people in China use the stylus...
In Hong Kong most people don't really have touch screen phones, they enter Chinese using the phonetic system on the keypad, just like we enter the alphabet with alpha-numeric.
N8+HDMI+Keyboard+Mouse=COOL!
mobile computer indeed.
@yauchildchew
Interestingly why would anybody need GoogleTV if they have this phone? N8 from what I saw has a WebTV app and it connects to your big screen TV thru HDMI plus Dolby surround sound output and gives you a keyboard and mouse thru BT - why would you need a GoogleTV box then?
So you have to buy the keyboard AND the mouse to use the N8. How ridiculous. You might as well just buy a netbook if you have to carry around a keyboard and mouse as well.
My netbook is so much better than this. Can you run Windows or Photoshop on the N8. No ? .. Lame.
Windows XP or Windows 7 Starter?
@taligent
This is the most ridiculous comment I have seen all week on Engadget...Go back to your hole...
@Seb6554 .. Windows 7 .. If you need to use a keyboard and mouse with your mobile device and it doesn't run Windows 7. You blew it.
@taligent How ridiculous is your thoughts? Your comment makes it seem like if you were in the market for a netbook, this is what you would get. I see this as more of a HTPC cause you can plug it into your TV and watch youtube, movies, or browse the web. Most netbooks don't even have HDMI and even then you have a wire from the tv to the netbook. If you are going to call something lame, compare it correctly.
@evilpaul .. I am just echoing the stupid comments that got highly ranked:
http://www.engadget.com/2010/01/27/ipad-has-optional-keyboard-dock/#comments
@taligent next time, try to think of comments yourself.
then don't bother posting those, either.
@taligent
I'll say this in as few words as possible
This is a phone not a network idiot so STFU GTFU GTH
KTHXBIA
@taligent some of us already have these bluetooth devices and have been using them with other Nokia (Samsung and SE) devices for several years. They're not requirements but just add to the capability of the device. When I first tried the iPhone I thought it such a waste not to have the capability to talk to bluetooth devices such as these.
@taligent This is an option dumbass, the N8 still has an onscreen keyboard, and obviously touch controls. Why would they call it a phone if you'd always have to carry a keyboard and mouse around with it
@taligent So you're taking your anger out on a phone because some people got highly ranked for scorning a tablet? That's...peculiar...
@N900 .. I was being sarcastic to show the hypocracy of Engadget because of how universally everyone hated the idea of a bluetooth keyboard with an iPhone/iPad but love it with a Nokia.
Don't worry I am sure it all went over your head.
@taligent
No, you were just being a bit silly.
Probably best to stop now.
@taligent oh, then u r mad cuz ur iPhone didn't get the love that Nokia got?
Nice point!
That's it this is not a phone its a mobile computer. Mouse on screen FTW
It'll be revolutionary when it debuts on iOS 5.4.......... "And one more thing!"
@CMA Its already possible in ios 4.0 and there will probably be clip on Bluetooth keyboards for iPhone so people who don't like the iPhones awesome keyboard that I am using, could get what they want. That would actually be pretty smart though, (clip on)
omg awesome! I hope MeeGo gets this as well.
@leigh
It already does.
@leigh, both Maemo and Moblin have supported that for years, it's highly unlikely that their child, MeeGo, won't inherit those genes.
* Typed on my MX5500 keyboard connected to N900 ;)
The only thing it`s missing it`s a pico projector
@Lu1s why would you need a pico projector when you could just hook it up via HDMI?
Absolutely exceptional. Total media package and it fits in your pocket!
@inept
It's going to be affordable to boot! You see everyone comparing the N8 to the highest end smartphones on the market (and for the most part the N8 is holding it's own easily) and yet, the N8 is going to cost hundreds of dollars less then most of it's competition!
Price + Performance + Features = Nokia N8 Wins!
That is fricking sweet. Makes you wonder why Apple has locked out BT keyboards on the iPhone. I had a Nokia Thumb keyboard that plugged into my T68i back in 2003. It was great for txting. The N* is looking very interesting. Now make a case that has a slideout keyboard and an extra battery in it and I'd be really interested. They you have the best of both worlds. Business useful QWERTY and extra battery for the workweek and slim touchscreen only for the weekend. Also - I have that same mouse for my laptop - it's really impressive. Been using it 5 days a week for 4 months - still on the original AAA batteries.
@SolonLysander .. You can use a BT keyboard if you jailbreak it.
Quite bizarre from Apple given that the iPad supports it.
@SolonLysander Bluetooth keyboards in ios 4.0 idiot
